2- THE NOTEBOOK

Naina barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, the same thoughts returned again and again. The strange messages. The teachers whispering in the staff room. And most of all, the black notebook now hidden inside her school bag. It felt as if the notebook itself carried a secret weight, like it knew something important that no one else did.

The next morning, she woke up earlier than usual. The sky outside was still pale and quiet, and the streets had not yet filled with people. Naina sat at her desk and slowly pulled the notebook out of her bag. For a moment she hesitated. A strange feeling told her that opening it again might pull her into something bigger than she expected. But curiosity was stronger than fear.

She opened the notebook carefully.

The pages were filled with strange entries. Names of students. Dates from last year. Small notes written beside them. Some pages had circles drawn around certain names, while others had question marks next to them. It looked less like a diary and more like someone's private investigation.

Then she saw a familiar name.

Anika Sharma.

Naina's heart began beating faster.

Everyone at school remembered Anika. She had been a quiet girl who disappeared suddenly one afternoon last year. The school said she moved away with her family, but many students never believed that story. There had always been rumors, whispers in the hallways that something else had happened.

Naina looked closer at the page.

Beside Anika's name was a short sentence.

Last seen near the old science building.

Under that sentence someone had written another line in darker ink.

Someone is lying.

Naina quickly closed the notebook when she heard her mother calling from the kitchen.

"Naina! You're going to be late for school!"

She slid the notebook back into her bag, but now her mind was racing with questions.

Who wrote this?

Why were they tracking students?

And why did it all connect to Anika?

At school the air felt different that day.

Naina noticed things she had never paid attention to before. Teachers speaking quietly to each other. Students suddenly stopping their conversations when someone walked past. The entire building felt like it was hiding something.

During lunch break she found Aarav near the basketball court.

"I need to show you something," she said.

Aarav immediately noticed the serious look on her face.

"What happened?"

Naina took out the notebook and opened it to the page with Anika's name. Aarav read the words slowly, his expression growing more confused with each second.

"Where did you get this?" he asked.

"I found it under my desk yesterday."

Aarav looked around carefully before lowering his voice.

"This is really weird."

"I know," Naina replied. "Look at the dates. Most of them are from last year."

Aarav flipped through a few more pages.

Suddenly he stopped.

"Wait."

"What?"

He pointed to another name circled on the page.

It was the name of one of their teachers.

Mr. Khanna.

Next to it someone had written three words.

Knows more than he says.

Aarav slowly closed the notebook.

"This is bad," he said quietly.

"What do you mean?"

"If someone is investigating the teachers… and if the teachers find out we have this notebook…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

Naina understood anyway.

But instead of feeling scared, something else grew inside her.

Determination.

"If Anika really disappeared," she said softly, "someone deserves to know the truth."

Aarav stared at her.

"You're serious about this?"

Naina nodded.

Before Aarav could reply, Naina's phone suddenly vibrated in her hand.

Another message from the unknown number.

Her stomach tightened as she opened it.

The message was longer this time.

You should have listened.

Return the notebook.

Or you might disappear too.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Aarav slowly looked up at Naina.

"How do they know about the notebook?"

Naina's fingers tightened around the phone.

That was the scariest part.

Someone was watching them.

And whoever it was… was much closer than they thought.
