Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — The Ancient Signal

The road through the Whispering Forest felt different after the wolf attack.

Not quieter.

Quieter would have been comforting.

Instead, the silence had a weight to it now.

The kind of silence that followed violence.

The Crimson Ash riders moved forward once again, their horses stepping carefully over the dirt road while the forest loomed around them like a living wall.

Kael kept glancing down at the pendant in his hand.

The small metal leaf still glowed faintly.

Not bright enough to illuminate the road.

But bright enough that it definitely wasn't normal.

He turned it slowly between his fingers.

"Okay… this is weird."

Mira leaned over slightly from her saddle.

"Still glowing?"

"Yeah."

The metal felt warm against his palm.

Not hot.

Just warm.

Like a coal that had cooled but still remembered the fire.

Kael frowned.

"Did Old Bran say anything else about this thing?"

Mira shook her head.

"He barely explained anything."

Kael sighed.

"Everyone in this world loves mysteries."

Up ahead, Valen slowed his horse slightly.

"Show me."

Kael nudged his horse forward until he rode beside him and held out the pendant.

The commander studied it carefully in the moonlight.

The leaf-shaped metal shimmered dark red, almost like frozen lava.

Valen's golden eyes narrowed slightly.

"Hm."

Kael blinked.

"That's it?"

Valen glanced at him.

"You expect a dramatic explanation?"

"I would appreciate one."

Valen turned the pendant slightly between his fingers.

"This is not simply a relic."

Mira leaned forward from behind them.

"What do you mean?"

Valen handed the pendant back to Kael.

"It is reacting."

Kael stared at it again.

"To what?"

Valen looked deeper into the forest ahead.

"Something nearby."

That answer did not make Kael feel better.

"Nearby how?"

Valen did not answer immediately.

Instead, he raised his hand.

The riders slowed again.

Not a full stop this time.

But cautious.

Alert.

Kael swallowed.

"Please tell me we're not about to fight another giant animal."

One of the Crimson Ash warriors riding beside them spoke.

"It does not feel like a beast."

Kael turned toward him.

The warrior had a scar running down one side of his face and calm gray eyes.

"What does it feel like then?"

The man hesitated.

"Old."

That word hung in the air.

The forest seemed to react to it somehow.

A faint wind moved through the leaves overhead.

Whispers of branches brushing together.

The Whispering Forest had earned its name.

Kael shifted in his saddle.

"I officially don't like that description."

Mira gave a small shrug.

"I think it sounds interesting."

Kael looked at her.

"Of course you do."

They continued forward slowly.

The glowing mushrooms along the forest floor became more numerous now.

Patches of blue light spread beneath the trees like scattered stars.

And Kael noticed something strange.

The closer they rode down the road—

The brighter his pendant glowed.

He held it up again.

"Okay… that's definitely stronger."

Valen nodded once.

"Yes."

Kael frowned.

"So whatever it's reacting to… we're riding directly toward it?"

"Correct."

Kael groaned softly.

"Fantastic."

The forest slowly began to change.

The trees grew larger.

Older.

Their trunks twisted in strange shapes, as though time itself had warped them.

Some were hollow.

Others were split open by lightning scars.

Roots rose from the ground like tangled stone walls.

And the glowing fungi covered everything.

Rocks.

Branches.

Even the bark of some trees.

The forest floor shimmered with dim blue light.

It looked almost beautiful.

But the air felt thick.

Heavy.

Kael's horse began to slow on its own.

It snorted uneasily.

Valen raised his hand again.

The group stopped completely.

No one spoke.

The forest whispered around them.

Then—

The pendant flared brighter.

A pulse of warm red light flickered across Kael's hand.

He stared at it.

"Uh… that seems important."

Valen dismounted immediately.

His boots landed softly on the glowing forest floor.

"Everyone down."

The warriors obeyed without hesitation.

Kael slid off his horse beside Mira.

He held the pendant carefully.

The light pulsed again.

Then again.

Almost like a heartbeat.

Valen stepped closer.

"Follow it."

Kael blinked.

"Follow… the pendant?"

Valen nodded toward the forest beside the road.

"Yes."

Kael looked into the dark trees.

"…That seems like a terrible idea."

Mira was already walking forward.

"Come on."

Kael sighed.

"I hate curiosity."

The group moved slowly off the road.

Branches crunched beneath their boots.

Blue mushrooms lit the ground like scattered lanterns.

The deeper they walked into the forest, the brighter the pendant became.

Soon it glowed strongly enough to cast red light across Kael's fingers.

The warriors spread out cautiously.

Weapons ready.

But nothing attacked them.

No animals.

No monsters.

Just the whispering forest.

After several minutes, the trees began to thin.

Kael noticed the ground rising slightly.

A small hill stood ahead.

At the top—

Something large loomed in the darkness.

Kael squinted.

"What is that?"

They climbed the hill slowly.

As they reached the top, the moon emerged from behind the clouds.

Silver light washed across the clearing.

And Kael's breath caught.

"…Whoa."

Ancient stone ruins stood before them.

Not a full building.

Just the remains of one.

Broken pillars.

Collapsed walls.

Fragments of carved stone scattered across the ground.

The structure looked incredibly old.

Older than anything Kael had ever seen.

Vines and moss covered most of it.

But faint symbols were carved into the surviving stone.

Symbols that glowed softly.

Blue.

The same color as the mushrooms.

Mira stepped closer.

"What is this place?"

One of the warriors whispered quietly.

"I have never seen ruins like these."

Valen walked slowly toward the center of the clearing.

His expression had grown more serious than Kael had ever seen.

"Ancient."

Kael looked down at the pendant.

The red leaf was glowing brightly now.

Almost shining.

And it seemed to be pulling him toward the center of the ruins.

"Uh… guys?"

Mira followed his gaze.

"Oh."

Kael walked forward slowly.

Every step made the pendant glow brighter.

Until finally he reached the center of the clearing.

There, half buried beneath moss and roots—

Was a stone pedestal.

Cracked with age.

Covered in glowing carvings.

And in the center of the pedestal…

A small circular indentation.

Exactly the shape of the pendant.

Kael stared at it.

"You've got to be kidding me."

Mira folded her arms.

"That seems very convenient."

Kael looked at Valen.

"Is this a trap?"

Valen studied the pedestal carefully.

Then shook his head.

"No."

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"You're sure?"

Valen pointed at the glowing carvings.

"These runes are older than the Crimson Ash Order."

One of the warriors stepped closer.

"Ancient elemental script."

Kael sighed.

"Great. Another mystery language."

Valen looked at him.

"The pedestal was built for the pendant."

Kael stared at the circular slot again.

"So… you're saying I should put it in there?"

Valen nodded.

"Yes."

Kael hesitated.

"This feels like the part of the story where something dangerous happens."

Mira smirked.

"It probably is."

Kael sighed dramatically.

"Of course it is."

He took a deep breath.

Then carefully placed the red leaf pendant into the slot.

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Kael blinked.

"…Okay maybe it was just decor—"

The pedestal exploded with light.

Red and blue energy surged through the ancient carvings.

The ruins trembled.

Cracks in the stone walls began glowing.

The mushrooms across the clearing brightened dramatically.

The forest itself seemed to react.

Wind rushed through the trees.

Kael jumped back.

"OH COME ON."

The pedestal pulsed again.

Then a beam of red light shot upward into the sky.

Straight through the forest canopy.

Through the clouds.

Into the night.

Far.

Far away.

Deep within the mountains—

A massive stone fortress stood beneath the moonlight.

Inside a dark chamber, a burning crystal flickered violently.

The robed figure from earlier lifted his head sharply.

The crystal glowed brighter.

"Another signal."

His cold voice echoed through the chamber.

"A relic has awakened."

Shadows moved behind him.

"What are your orders?"

The figure turned slowly.

His eyes glowed faintly in the darkness.

"Send the hunters."

Back in the Whispering Forest—

The beam of light finally faded.

The ruins went dark again.

The forest fell silent.

Kael stared at the pedestal.

"…Well."

Mira looked at him.

"You activated something ancient."

Kael nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

Valen studied the ruins carefully.

His expression was unreadable.

Kael looked at him nervously.

"Was that bad?"

Valen exhaled slowly.

"Very."

Kael rubbed his face.

"Fantastic."

One of the warriors suddenly spoke.

"Commander."

Valen turned.

"What is it?"

The warrior pointed toward the ground.

The earth around the pedestal had begun to crack.

Soft rumbling echoed beneath their feet.

Kael stared.

"Uh… that's not good."

The cracks spread rapidly across the stone floor.

Blue light began leaking from beneath the ruins.

The ground trembled harder.

Mira stepped back.

"What did you wake up?"

Kael swallowed.

"I really hope it's friendly."

The stone pedestal suddenly shattered.

A massive surge of ancient energy burst upward from the ground.

Wind exploded through the clearing.

And deep beneath the ruins—

Something enormous moved.

Valen drew his sword instantly.

His voice turned sharp.

"Everyone back!"

The earth split open.

And from the glowing cracks in the ground…

A gigantic shape began rising slowly toward the surface.

Something ancient.

Something powerful.

Something that had been sleeping for centuries.

Kael stared in horror.

"…I think I broke it."
