Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 — The Weight of Forgotten Empires

Berlin was colder than Li Wen expected.

A sharp autumn wind swept through the streets as black cars and taxis stopped in front of the massive glass building hosting the World Summit on the Greatest Empires in History. Scholars from every corner of the world had gathered here—historians, archaeologists, journalists, and diplomats.

Inside the grand hall, thousands of seats faced a large stage illuminated by bright white lights. Giant screens displayed the event title above the stage.

The atmosphere was electric.

Some had come to celebrate the greatness of ancient civilizations.

Others had come to challenge them.

And a few had come to control the narrative.

Behind the curtain, Li Wen adjusted the sleeve of her dark coat and quietly observed the hall through a small opening in the stage curtain.

Every seat was filled.

She could hear whispers spreading through the audience.

"That's her."

"The historian who challenged three major imperial narratives."

"The author of Shadows of Empire."

She inhaled slowly.

History had always been written by the victors. But the truth… the truth was rarely so simple.

A voice echoed through the speakers.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the keynote speaker of tonight's summit… the historian whose work has reignited debates across the academic world…"

A brief pause.

"Professor Li Wen."

The hall erupted into applause.

As Li Wen stepped onto the stage, bright lights flooded her vision. Cameras flashed. Thousands of faces stared back at her.

Some admired her.

Some doubted her.

Some feared what she might reveal.

She approached the podium slowly.

When the applause faded, she looked across the audience.

"History," she began calmly, "is not just the story of empires."

The room fell silent.

"It is also the story of what empires tried to bury."

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Li Wen continued.

"Tonight, many speakers will celebrate the glory of powerful rulers, their victories, their monuments, their legacies."

She paused.

"But I am not here to speak about glory."

Another pause.

"I am here to speak about shadows."

The word lingered in the air.

"Because behind every great empire," she said quietly, "there are stories that were never meant to survive."

A journalist leaned forward in his seat.

Across the hall, a man in a dark suit quietly observed from the back row.

Li Wen opened the folder on the podium.

"Let us begin," she said.

"With the first empire of China."

The giant screen behind her illuminated with an ancient map.

"The empire of Qin Shi Huang."

The audience watched carefully.

"The emperor who united China."

"The emperor who built the first Great Wall."

"The emperor history remembers as a visionary."

Li Wen's voice lowered slightly.

"But there is another story about Qin Shi Huang."

A story rarely told.

A story buried beneath centuries of carefully controlled narratives.

She turned the page slowly.

"And if that story is true…"

Her eyes moved across the audience.

"…then the foundations of the greatest empire in Chinese history were built on a secret that someone—"

The lights suddenly flickered.

Just for a moment.

Li Wen stopped speaking.

Because in the back of the hall, a man had stood up.

And he was staring directly at her.

Not with curiosity.

But with warning.
