Chapter 72 - CH 72 - Old Man Hokage

The invasion didn't end with a final battle.

It ended with people realizing they were losing.

Badly.

A Sand chūnin stood atop a half-collapsed building, breathing hard.

Around him—

Konoha shinobi.

Too many.

Behind him—

No reinforcements.

He looked toward the village walls.

Nothing.

Toward the stadium.

Nothing.

Toward the distant forest where their ultimate weapon had disappeared.

A red-purple light still stained the sky.

"...Where is the Kazekage?"

Nobody answered.

That question was spreading rapidly.

Where was the Fourth Kazekage?

Where was Orochimaru?

Where was Shukaku?

The invasion plan had depended upon all three.

None had appeared.

Instead, Konoha kept producing shinobi.

"DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

Choza Akimichi's enormous fist cratered the street.

The remaining Sound shinobi immediately reconsidered several important life choices.

Shikaku stood behind him.

"Preferably before he does that again."

Weapons hit the ground.

Across another district, Hiashi Hyūga walked between captured Sand shinobi.

His Byakugan remained active.

"Thirty-seven prisoners."

An ANBU landed beside him.

"Forty-one in the southern district."

Hiashi nodded.

"Separate officers from enlisted personnel. Search everyone for poison, hidden weapons, and suicide mechanisms."

The ANBU disappeared.

Inoichi Yamanaka approached.

"Their command structure has collapsed."

Shikaku glanced toward him.

"Orochimaru?"

"Gone."

"Kazekage?"

"No sign."

Shikaku frowned.

That was concerning.

But it was tomorrow's concern.

"Then finish this."

Word spread.

Surrender.

Some did.

Others ran.

A few fought.

Those fights ended quickly.

Konoha's clan heads had stopped defending.

Now they were hunting.

The Rookie Nine had a different mission.

"CHECK EVERYTHING!"

Sakura's voice carried down the street.

"Every building! Every room!"

Naruto's remaining clones had disappeared.

So they did it themselves.

Kiba kicked open a damaged apartment door.

"Clear!"

Akamaru sniffed beneath a collapsed table.

"Bark!"

Kiba stopped.

"What?"

Another bark.

Kiba dropped.

"There!"

A small hand stuck from beneath the debris.

Choji lifted the broken support beam.

Shino's insects slipped underneath.

Hinata activated her Byakugan.

"She's alive!"

Ino dropped beside the trapped woman.

"Ma'am? Can you hear me?"

Her eyes opened.

Barely.

"Got another survivor!"

Medics came running.

Nobody celebrated.

There were too many buildings left.

Shikamaru stood in the middle of an intersection.

He slowly turned.

His expression became increasingly horrified.

"...What a drag."

Ino looked at him.

"What?"

He pointed.

For the first time since the invasion began—

They actually looked at Konoha.

Not as a battlefield.

As their home.

Smoke rose from entire neighborhoods.

The stadium was wrecked.

Buildings had collapsed.

Windows were shattered for blocks.

Giant roots from the First Hokage's jutsu had torn through streets near the arena.

Water filled several others.

Cracks ran through stone walls.

Fires burned everywhere.

Kiba stared.

"They really fucked this place up."

Sakura was too tired to yell at him for swearing.

"Yeah."

Hinata looked toward the Hokage Monument.

It was still there.

So were the walls.

So were they.

"We're still here."

That was enough.

For now.

Jōnin took control before sunset.

"Bucket line here!"

"Water Release users to the eastern district!"

"Check that foundation!"

"Nobody enters until an Earth Release specialist clears it!"

Konoha stopped being a battlefield.

It became a worksite.

Water jutsu drowned burning rooftops.

Earth Release stabilized damaged buildings.

Hyūga searched rubble.

Inuzuka tracked missing civilians.

Aburame insects crawled into spaces humans couldn't reach.

Akimichi moved debris that would have required cranes.

Every district was searched.

Then searched again.

And again.

Only after the final fires were contained and every accessible building had been inspected did the order spread.

Konohagakure was secure.

Battered.

Bleeding.

But secure.

Several kilometers away—

Kakashi landed in a crater.

Jiraiya arrived seconds later.

Neither spoke.

They simply stared.

There had been a forest here.

That was the first problem.

Now there was mostly dirt.

Trees lay flattened for hundreds of meters.

Sand coated everything.

A trench carved by the redirected Bijū Bomb stretched through the earth.

At its center—

Three children.

Kakashi recognized the first two immediately.

"Sasuke."

"Naruto."

Jiraiya dropped beside them.

Both alive.

Barely.

Then Kakashi noticed the third.

"...Gaara."

The Sand jinchūriki was missing an arm.

Jiraiya's expression hardened.

He placed two fingers against Gaara's stomach.

Then froze.

"Well."

Kakashi looked at him.

"What?"

"The One-Tail is still in there."

Kakashi stared at the surrounding destruction.

"...Wonderful."

Gaara shifted.

Sand twitched.

Jiraiya immediately moved.

"Nope."

A sealing scroll opened.

Ink spread across Gaara's stomach.

Jiraiya's fingers moved rapidly.

"Five-Layer Bijū Suppression Seal."

SLAM!

The formula contracted.

Gaara's body went limp.

Kakashi raised an eyebrow.

"That necessary?"

Jiraiya looked around at the missing forest.

"Do you want to find out?"

"...No."

"Good."

Kakashi lifted Sasuke.

Jiraiya picked up Gaara.

Then looked down at Naruto.

Both men paused.

"...You get him," Kakashi said.

"I have the one-armed murder child."

"He's lighter."

"He also turns into a giant raccoon."

Kakashi considered that.

"Fair."

A shadow clone appeared beside Jiraiya and picked Naruto up.

Kakashi stared.

"You could've done that immediately."

"Shut up."

The next morning—

Konohagakure woke to silence.

Not peaceful silence.

Exhausted silence.

Inside Konoha Hospital, the most powerful men and women in the village stood around one bed.

Shikaku Nara.

Inoichi Yamanaka.

Choza Akimichi.

Hiashi Hyūga.

Tsume Inuzuka.

Shibi Aburame.

Several senior jōnin.

Homura.

Koharu.

Jiraiya stood near the window.

Nobody spoke.

Machines breathed for the Third Hokage.

One tube disappeared into his mouth.

Another into his arm.

Bandages wrapped his abdomen.

His skin had gone pale.

Too pale.

The poison remained in his blood.

The medical corps had slowed it.

They hadn't stopped it.

A monitor beeped.

Again.

Again.

Then Hiruzen's fingers moved.

Jiraiya immediately straightened.

"Sensei?"

Hiruzen's eyes opened.

Everyone moved toward him.

"Lord Hokage."

"Hiruzen."

"Don't try to move."

His eyes traveled around the room.

Slowly.

Confused at first.

Then aware.

He tried speaking.

Nothing came through the tube.

A medic hurried forward.

Minutes later, after considerable protest from everyone involved, Hiruzen could finally breathe without it long enough to speak.

His voice was almost nonexistent.

"Village..."

Shikaku stepped forward.

"Secure."

Hiruzen closed his eyes.

Relief.

"Casualties?"

Silence.

His eyes opened again.

Shikaku didn't lie.

"Still counting."

Hiruzen understood.

"The children?"

"Alive."

Hiruzen breathed out.

Then his eyes moved toward Jiraiya.

"The boy..."

Jiraiya knew immediately.

"Naruto?"

A tiny nod.

"Bring him."

Naruto arrived twelve minutes later.

Against medical advice.

Very much against medical advice.

Actually—

Against everyone's advice.

He shuffled into the room wearing hospital clothes.

Bandages covered his arms.

More wrapped his torso.

His hair looked like he'd lost a fight with a lightning bolt.

He had dark circles beneath his eyes.

He looked terrible.

Hiruzen smiled anyway.

"Naruto."

Naruto stopped.

For some reason—

Seeing the old man lying there hurt worse than seeing Shukaku.

"Hey..."

His voice cracked.

Naruto cleared his throat.

"Old man."

The clan heads quietly began leaving.

One after another.

Jiraiya was last.

He placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder.

Then closed the door.

Naruto stood alone.

Hiruzen looked smaller.

He hated that.

The Hokage wasn't supposed to look small.

Naruto pulled a chair beside the bed.

Neither spoke.

And memories came anyway.

A much younger Naruto sat across from the Hokage's desk.

"Why can't I have more allowance?"

"Because you spent it."

"That's stupid."

"That is generally how money works."

Another.

Naruto stood on Hiruzen's desk.

Paint covered his clothes.

Hiruzen stared at him.

Naruto stared back.

"Wasn't me."

Hiruzen slowly looked out the window.

The Hokage Monument had been painted.

He looked back.

"You are holding the paintbrush."

Naruto hid it behind his back.

"What paintbrush?"

Another.

Naruto sat alone on a swing.

Children left with their parents.

Hiruzen appeared beside him.

Didn't say anything.

Just sat.

Eventually—

Naruto leaned against him.

Another.

A bowl of ramen.

Hiruzen paid.

Naruto ordered another.

Hiruzen paid again.

Naruto ordered a third.

Hiruzen's eyebrow twitched.

"Perhaps I should reconsider the village's budget."

Naruto hadn't understood what that meant.

He'd just ordered extra pork.

Naruto blinked.

The hospital returned.

His eyes burned.

"You're gonna be okay."

Hiruzen didn't answer.

Naruto leaned closer.

"Old man?"

His eyes had closed again.

Naruto shot upright.

A medic entered immediately.

Checked the monitor.

Checked Hiruzen.

Then relaxed.

"He's sleeping."

Naruto's heart continued trying to escape his chest.

"...Oh."

The medic looked at him.

"You should be too."

"No."

"Naruto—"

"I'm staying."

She stared at him.

Naruto stared back.

Apparently deciding she'd fought enough battles for one lifetime, the medic left.

Naruto pulled his chair closer.

Hours passed.

He didn't move.

People came.

People left.

Jiraiya checked on him twice.

Kakashi once.

Iruka brought food.

Naruto barely touched it.

Eventually the sun disappeared.

The room darkened.

Naruto rested his forehead against the edge of Hiruzen's mattress.

His body begged for sleep.

His eyes hurt.

Everything hurt.

But every time he closed them—

He saw one System notification.

Protect the Third Hokage

STATUS: UNRESOLVED

So Naruto stayed awake.

One hand rested beside the old man's.

Waiting.

Near midnight—

Hiruzen's fingers moved.

They weakly closed around Naruto's hand.

Naruto's head snapped upward.

Tired blue eyes met old brown ones.

Hiruzen Sarutobi opened his eyes.

And Naruto smiled.

The 3rd Hokage opened his eyes.

And Naruto smiled.

"Old man."

Hiruzen's fingers remained wrapped weakly around Naruto's hand.

"Still here?"

Naruto sniffed.

"Obviously."

A tired smile touched Hiruzen's face.

"Thank you my child."

Naruto immediately stopped smiling.

"Don't do that."

"What Naruto?"

"Talk like you're going to die"

"I don't have much time left Naruto, it's OK, I've come to terms with it long before now."

Silence returned.

Not uncomfortable.

Naruto had spent enough time around the old man to know they didn't always need words.

Eventually Hiruzen spoke.

"Naruto."

"Hm?"

"I asked you here for a reason."

Naruto straightened.

Hiruzen gathered what little strength remained.

"As my final official act as Hokage..."

Naruto's smile disappeared at the word final.

"...I am promoting you to chūnin."

Naruto stared.

Nothing happened.

Then—

PING!

Naruto ignored it.

"What?"

"Effective immediately."

"But the exams—"

"Are irrelevant."

Naruto blinked.

Hiruzen's smile returned.

"Do you intend to argue with the Hokage regarding your promotion?"

"...Maybe."

"How troublesome."

"That's Shikamaru's thing."

Hiruzen breathed carefully.

"You protected civilians. Coordinated shinobi across multiple battlefields. Prepared your comrades before the invasion ever began."

Naruto looked down.

"You fought the One-Tail."

"Yeah."

"And won."

Naruto shrugged.

"I helped."

A weak laugh escaped Hiruzen.

"The village would have suffered far greater losses without you."

Naruto's expression became serious.

"No."

Hiruzen raised an eyebrow.

"Lord Hokage."

That caught his attention.

Naruto rarely called him that.

"I didn't save Konoha."

Naruto thought about everything he'd seen.

"Choji was pulling people out of buildings. Hinata was finding survivors. Sakura was protecting civilians. Shikamaru was helping coordinate everyone."

His grip tightened around Hiruzen's hand.

"Sasuke fought Gaara before I even got there."

Naruto smiled faintly.

"The clan heads fought. The jōnin fought. The chūnin fought. Even Konohamaru probably did something stupid."

Naruto looked toward the window.

"I helped."

He nodded.

"I know I did."

"But everybody helped."

His eyes traveled across the damaged village beyond the glass.

"My comrades kept Konoha standing just as much as I did."

For several seconds Hiruzen said nothing.

Then—

"Spoken like a true chūnin."

Naruto went completely still.

Hiruzen's smile disappeared.

"Naruto."

"Don't."

"There is something else."

"Old man—"

"Something I should have told you years ago."

That stopped him.

Hiruzen looked toward the ceiling.

"Your mother."

Naruto forgot how to breathe.

"My..."

"Her name was Kushina Uzumaki."

Naruto stared at him.

Uzumaki.

The same name.

His name.

"Kushina..."

Hiruzen smiled.

"She was extraordinary."

Naruto leaned forward.

"What was she like?"

"Extremely loud."

Naruto's mouth fell open.

"Rude."

"What?!"

"Impulsive."

"Hey!"

"Stubborn."

"Okay, I get it."

"Fond of ramen."

Naruto froze.

Hiruzen's smile widened slightly.

"Oh my God."

"She was also an incredible kunoichi."

Naruto went quiet.

"Strong?"

"Exceptionally."

"How strong?"

"Strong enough that most intelligent shinobi knew better than to make her angry."

Naruto smiled.

"Awesome."

"Your mother possessed a spirit that was extraordinarily difficult to extinguish."

Hiruzen's smile weakened.

"And she loved you."

Naruto's smile disappeared.

Hiruzen looked directly at him.

"Before you were born."

His voice became quieter.

"While she carried you."

"Until her final moments."

"Your mother loved you."

Naruto's eyes burned.

He looked down.

"Then why..."

The question stuck.

He forced it out.

"Why didn't anybody tell me?"

Hiruzen closed his eyes.

"Fear."

Naruto looked at him.

"And cowardice."

Hiruzen breathed slowly.

"Some secrets were kept to protect you."

His fingers tightened weakly.

"Others because those of us responsible found it easier to remain silent than confront our failures."

Naruto said nothing.

"For that..."

Hiruzen's voice cracked.

"...I am sorry."

Naruto wanted to be angry.

Part of him was.

But the man apologizing wasn't the Hokage sitting safely behind his desk.

He was an old man dying in a hospital bed.

So Naruto listened.

"The Uzumaki were once far more than a scattered bloodline."

Naruto's attention sharpened.

"They had a village."

PING!

Naruto flinched.

Hiruzen continued.

"Uzushiogakure."

The name felt strange.

And somehow familiar.

"The Village Hidden in the Whirlpools."

Naruto whispered it.

"Uzushiogakure..."

"An ally of Konoha."

Hiruzen stared into the distance.

"A powerful one."

"The Uzumaki possessed extraordinary vitality and unmatched talent in Fūinjutsu. Their techniques were feared throughout the shinobi world."

Naruto thought about his bloodline.

His seals.

His chakra.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

"Then what happened?"

Hiruzen's expression darkened.

"War."

Naruto waited.

"And fear."

"The Uzumaki became a target."

Hiruzen swallowed.

"Enemies feared what their sealing arts could become."

His eyes closed.

"When Uzushiogakure fell..."

His voice became bitter.

"Konoha did not do enough."

Naruto stared.

"We were allies."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't we help them?"

Hiruzen was silent.

That was answer enough.

"We were fighting our own wars. Protecting our own borders. Making calculations about which lives could be spared."

His breathing became heavier.

"We called it necessity."

A pause.

"History has many polite words for cowardice."

Naruto looked down at the Uzumaki spiral on his clothing.

He had worn it his entire life.

And never understood.

PING!

"Was she..."

Naruto hesitated.

"Would she have been a good mom?"

Hiruzen's face softened.

"Naruto."

"Your mother was already an amazing mother."

Naruto's lip trembled.

"She just wasn't given enough time to show you."

Naruto wiped his eyes angrily.

"That's stupid."

"Yes."

"All of this is stupid."

"Most worthwhile things are."

"That doesn't even make sense."

"I'm very old."

"That's not an excuse."

"It has worked remarkably well for several decades."

Naruto laughed despite himself.

Then cried because he had.

Experienced Genin → Chūnin

Naruto stared at the word.

Chūnin.

He should have been screaming.

Probably running through the village.

Telling Sakura.

Bragging to Sasuke.

Demanding everyone call him Naruto-sama.

Instead—

He closed the window.

Hiruzen was watching him.

"You have that expression again."

"What expression?"

"The one where you're looking at something no one else can see."

Naruto froze.

Hiruzen smiled.

"I have learned not to ask."

"...Thanks."

The monitor changed.

Naruto heard it immediately.

Hiruzen did too.

The old man's breathing became shallower.

"Naruto."

Naruto grabbed his hand with both of his.

"No."

"Listen."

"No."

"Please."

That word broke through.

Naruto stopped.

"The Will of Fire..."

Hiruzen breathed.

"...is not a jutsu."

Naruto's eyes filled again.

"It isn't the Hokage."

Another breath.

"It isn't even the village."

"It is choosing to protect those who come after you."

Hiruzen looked at him.

"The next generation."

"Your friends."

"Their children."

"People you may never live long enough to meet."

"That's what makes the village more than our home."

His voice weakened.

"Promise me..."

Naruto squeezed his hand.

"Anything."

"Promise that you will keep dedicating yourself toward Konoha's future."

Naruto laughed through his tears. Of course he would, having to ask seemed absurd to the blonde.

Naruto nodded.

"I promise."

Hiruzen relaxed.

"And when the village loses its way..."

His eyes remained fixed on Naruto.

"...help it find its way back."

Naruto nodded harder.

"I will."

Hiruzen smiled.

Naruto's face crumpled.

"You'll make a fine Hokage one day."

Nobody could have prepared him for those words.

Not training.

Not Shukaku.

Not the System.

Nothing.

Naruto shook his head.

"You're gonna see it."

Hiruzen didn't answer.

"Old man."

His breathing slowed.

"You're gonna be there."

PING!

A single window appeared.

Save the 3rd Hokage - Failed

Naruto looked at it.

And his blood went cold.

Destiny Breaker Available

Current critical outcome detected.

Would you like to consume Destiny Breaker?

YES / NO

Naruto stopped breathing.

His hand lifted.

YES.

Right there.

One touch.

One item.

One recalculation.

Maybe the poison failed.

Maybe Tsunade suddenly walked through the door.

Maybe some antidote existed.

Maybe Hiruzen survived.

Maybe—

Naruto's finger moved closer.

Does not guarantee success.

Cannot alter completed events.

A recalculation.

Not a resurrection.

Not a miracle.

A chance.

Naruto looked away from the System.

At Hiruzen.

The old man wasn't afraid.

Naruto realized that suddenly.

Hiruzen looked tired.

Terribly tired.

But peaceful.

Naruto remembered the Hokage Monument.

The office.

The paperwork.

The lectures.

The ramen.

The swing.

An old man sitting beside a lonely child because nobody else would.

Hiruzen had spent decades burning for Konoha.

Through wars.

Through deaths.

Through mistakes Naruto was only beginning to understand.

His flame had grown weak.

But it hadn't gone out.

Not yet.

Naruto looked at YES.

He wanted to press it.

God, he wanted to press it.

But something stopped him.

Not the System.

Himself.

Was he saving Hiruzen because Hiruzen wanted saving?

Or because Naruto couldn't bear losing him?

Naruto's hand lowered.

His tears fell onto the blanket.

"No."

The System waited.

Naruto swallowed.

"I won't make your last moment into a dice roll."

He selected—

NO

The window disappeared.

Naruto leaned forward.

He wrapped his arms around Hiruzen carefully.

The old man's remaining strength brought one arm around Naruto.

Weak.

Warm.

"Thank you."

Naruto buried his face against him.

"For what?"

"For being my family."

Hiruzen's eyes closed.

His hand touched the back of Naruto's head.

"Protect..."

A breath.

"...the Will of Fire."

"I will."

"And Naruto..."

"Yeah?"

Hiruzen smiled.

One last time.

"I truly am..."

His breathing stopped for a moment.

"...proud of you."

The monitor became a single tone.

Naruto froze.

"Old man?"

Nothing.

"Old man."

He shook him gently.

Nothing.

"Hey."

Nothing.

Naruto's arms tightened around him.

"No..."

His voice broke.

The door opened behind him.

Doctors entered.

Naruto didn't notice.

Hiruzen Sarutobi—

Professor.

God of Shinobi.

Third Hokage of Konohagakure.

The man who had led the village through wars.

The man who had made mistakes.

The man who had carried their consequences.

The man who had occasionally bought ramen for one very lonely boy—

Was gone.

Naruto held him.

And cried.

Not as a jinchūriki.

Not as a shinobi.

Not as Konoha's newest chūnin.

Just as a boy who had lost someone he loved.

Outside the hospital window, the village remained scarred.

Smoke still rose from distant streets.

Buildings lay broken.

Families mourned.

Shinobi worked.

Children lived.

Konoha endured.

One flame had finally gone out.

But before it did—

It had lit another.
