Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Signal in the Dark

The city burned.

Not in towering flames—most of the Devourer's body had disintegrated into black ash when the core shattered—but fires smoldered across the ruins where buildings had collapsed and streets had split open. Smoke drifted through the night air, carrying the bitter scent of dust, charred flesh, and something far older.

Kael stood in the middle of what used to be the governor district.

Or what was left of it.

The Devourer had hollowed the city out from beneath. Streets had sunk inward. Entire blocks had collapsed into massive crater-like cavities where the creature's body had once coiled underground.

Now there was only ruin.

And silence.

For a few long moments nobody spoke.

Mara finally broke it.

"…so," she said slowly, looking around the devastation, "we killed the monster."

Kael nodded once.

"Yeah."

She pointed toward the enormous trench where the Devourer's core had detonated.

"And the city."

Kael shrugged faintly.

"Collateral damage."

Mara stared at him.

"…you say that like you didn't just level an entire capital."

Kael opened his mouth to respond.

Then stopped.

Because the System spoke again.

SYSTEM UPDATE COMPLETE

ECLIPSE SOVEREIGNTY – STAGE II

NEW DESIGNATION: STAR-SHARD ASCENDANT

Aurelion noticed immediately.

"The System has finished integrating the fragment."

Kael rolled his shoulders.

His body still felt different.

Not just stronger.

Bigger somehow.

Like gravity had shifted around him.

The shadow wings had faded back into his silhouette, but the constellation-like markings beneath his skin still glowed faintly.

"Yeah," Kael said.

"I noticed."

Mara crossed her arms.

"So… are you done turning into a cosmic horror for the night?"

Kael smirked.

"No promises."

Aurelion looked up at the sky.

The moon hung above the ruined city, pale and distant. Smoke drifted across it in slow waves.

But something else had changed.

The air felt…

Different.

Charged.

"You feel it," Aurelion said.

Kael nodded.

"Yeah."

When the Devourer died, something had been released.

Not energy.

A message.

Kael didn't know how he understood that, but the Seraph fragment inside him recognized it instinctively.

A signal.

A beacon.

Somewhere far beyond the sky, something had heard it.

Mara rubbed the back of her neck.

"…I don't like the way you two are looking at the stars."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"Remember what the Seraph said?"

"That Devourers hunt worlds."

"Yeah."

"Well…"

He gestured upward.

"We just rang the dinner bell."

Mara stared at him.

"…you're kidding."

Kael shook his head.

"No."

Aurelion spoke quietly.

"The Devourer's death broadcasted its killer."

"And killers attract attention."

Mara groaned.

"Fantastic."

Before Kael could respond, movement caught his eye.

Figures were approaching through the smoke.

The Bastion hunters.

The ones who had survived the chaos when the city collapsed.

There weren't many.

Maybe twelve.

They moved slowly through the rubble, weapons still drawn, their faces lit by the flickering glow of burning debris.

Their captain stepped forward.

He was an older man Kael vaguely recognized—Commander Ivers from the Red Bastion's eastern garrison.

The man looked around the ruined city in stunned silence.

Then his gaze landed on Kael.

"…did you do this?"

Kael scratched the back of his head.

"Technically?"

Mara sighed.

"Don't say it like that."

Commander Ivers studied Kael carefully.

The glowing markings beneath his skin.

The faint distortion in the air around him.

The way shadows bent slightly toward his body.

The man lowered his rifle slowly.

"…what are you?"

Kael shrugged.

"Still figuring that out."

One of the younger hunters whispered behind the commander.

"That's him."

"The Eclipse."

The words spread quickly through the group.

Murmurs.

Uneasy glances.

Aurelion leaned slightly toward Kael.

"You have become a legend."

Kael grimaced.

"I hate legends."

Commander Ivers finally nodded once.

"Well."

He gestured at the destroyed city.

"You saved the Bastion."

Kael looked around.

Half the city was gone.

Thousands of people had died when the Devourer rose.

"Did I?"

The commander met his eyes.

"If that thing had finished feeding…"

He shook his head.

"There wouldn't be a Bastion left to save."

Kael didn't respond.

The man continued.

"The survivors will start evacuating by morning."

He paused.

"And the High Council will want to speak with you."

Kael groaned immediately.

"Oh absolutely not."

Mara laughed.

"You don't want to meet the people running the last human governments?"

"Have you met politicians?"

"Fair."

Aurelion smiled faintly.

"I fear you may not have a choice."

Kael sighed.

"Great."

He was about to say something else when the System flickered again.

NEW ASCENDANT SIGNATURE DETECTED

Kael froze.

"…that's not good."

Aurelion turned sharply.

"What is it?"

Kael looked toward the distant skyline.

Something moved across the rooftops far beyond the ruined district.

Too fast.

Too smooth.

And very definitely not human.

Mara followed his gaze.

"…tell me that's not another monster."

Kael watched the silhouette leap from one building to the next, moving like a shadow sliding through the night.

"No."

His voice went quiet.

"Worse."

Aurelion's eyes narrowed.

"Another Ascendant."

The figure stopped on a distant rooftop.

Even from hundreds of meters away, Kael could feel the power radiating off them.

Different from his.

But just as dangerous.

The stranger stood there for a moment, watching the ruined city.

Watching Kael.

Then they raised a hand.

And slowly… applauded.

The sound echoed faintly across the ruins.

Three slow claps.

Then the stranger bowed slightly.

Before vanishing into the night.

Mara blinked.

"…okay."

"That was creepy."

Kael stared at the empty rooftop.

"Yeah."

Aurelion's voice was calm.

"But inevitable."

Kael looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Aurelion folded his arms.

"The System seeds are waking."

"And you are not the only one carrying a fragment."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"Great."

Mara groaned.

"More cosmic weirdos."

Kael glanced back at the sky.

Somewhere beyond the stars…

Something had heard the signal.

And on Earth…

The other players were starting to move.
