Chapter 12 - The Breaking Point

One morning, while Rakesh was confined to the house due to his eye injury, the family was invited to a relative's birthday party. Since Rakesh couldn't go, he insisted that everyone else attend, especially his mother, who rarely had the chance to go out. He suggested that he and Rani stay behind. Rani didn't object; in fact, she had been waiting for a moment just like this to release the resentment that had been festering in her heart.

The Midnight Confrontation

That evening, the silence of the house was broken.

Rani: "I've tried so hard to adjust here. I'm only staying because of you. I've done everything to win your heart, but I don't know why I still haven't found a place in it."

Rakesh, whose love for Rani had been growing steadily, had been planning to confess his feelings. Even as she complained, he thought to himself: "I have fallen in love with you. You will be so happy when I finally tell you."

Rani: "Why are you silent? What are you thinking? Speak up! Today is our final discussion."

Rakesh: "The truth is, you come from such a wealthy family. Every time I want to come close to you, I stop. I worry you'll think poorly of me or reject my love. If you were like me, we would have had a real relationship long ago. But you are different in every way, and that terrifies me. I don't say anything because I'm afraid of being hurt. I saw you crying alone the other day... I know it's because of the pain of being married to me. I feel like a criminal. It's insulting to realize that I am such an ordinary man that my wife has to live in regret."

The Venom Released

At this, Rani lost her temper completely. The poison planted by her aunts poured out.

Rani: "That's not it! The truth is you have no backbone. I didn't realize you were this shy. I can't take you anywhere near people I know. You can't even take your own wife on a trip. You have neither money nor courage. You couldn't even take me out during Durga Puja, only to those useless village fairs. You couldn't even take me on a honeymoon. You can't fulfill even the smallest desires, so how will you ever take care of my dreams?

I'm ashamed to introduce you to my friends. I'm terrified they'll want to visit and see this asbestos roof and this poverty. I feel humiliated taking you to my relatives. And now, this eye problem. No matter what the doctor says, who knows if you'll ever really see again? I already hate identifying you as my husband—if your eyes don't heal, what will people call me? The 'wife of a blind man'? How do you even live with such failure?"

Rakesh's Desperate Defense

Rakesh stared at her, stunned. He couldn't believe this was the same woman he was just about to confess his love to.

Rakesh: "I accept everything you said. I haven't earned much money, but it's not for lack of trying. I tried to work online, I tried to start a photo studio, I tried a garment business. They failed because I had no capital and no support. People only see success; they never see the struggle.

And you ask how I live? I would have committed suicide long ago. My fate is a tragedy. But my mother is as 'foolish' as I am, and my aunt is disabled. If I die, the shock would kill them too. I am living by force, not by choice.

You must have a favorite color, right? Can you change that preference just by wishing it? You have no control over it. It's the same with my shyness. I didn't choose to be this way; I've been like this since I was a child. I want to be an extrovert like other men, but I can't. No one understands this agony but me."

The Final Departure

Rakesh slumped into a chair, weeping.

Rakesh: "I thought you would understand, but you didn't. If I am the cause of all your misery, what is the solution? Do you want a divorce? I don't want you to suffer because of me. I won't stop you if you want to leave. My only request is—don't ask for alimony. My family and I simply don't have the money. I will set you free as soon as possible. I thought if I told you my feelings, things would get better... but you've closed every door today. Forgive me for wasting your time. You won't have to look at the face of this poor, shy, half-blind man for much longer."

Rakesh reached out to take her hands, but Rani pushed him away with a violent shove. She had already packed her bags.

Rani: "I'm not waiting any longer. I have nothing left to say to you. I am leaving for good. You deserve to be alone."

She grabbed her luggage and headed for the door. A car was already waiting outside.

Rakesh: "Wait, Rani! Don't go! It's evening, and the others aren't back yet. I can't see properly! Please, wait until they return. I can't see... I'll trip and fall!"

Stumbling and calling her name, Rakesh tried to follow her to the door. In his blurred vision, his foot caught on something on the floor. He fell hard, his head slamming against a chair on the veranda. His scalp split open, and blood began to pour.

"Rani... Rani..." he gasped, before losing consciousness as the world went dark.

Outside, the car engine revved, and Rani drove away into the distance, leaving Rakesh bleeding and alone in the dark.
