Chapter 1 - The Ash In The Wind

The wind carried ash again.

Caelan Verne noticed it before anyone else.

It drifted through the narrow streets like grey snow, settling on rooftops and the rusted iron rails of the tramway. Most people ignored it. Ash storms were common in the industrial city of Greyhaven.

But today felt different.

Caelan stopped walking.

The small particles floating in the air shimmered faintly under the gas lamps.

That was wrong.

Ash was never supposed to glow.

"Oi, Caelan! Stop staring at the sky again."

A voice shouted from across the street.

It was Daren, the apprentice blacksmith, waving from outside the forge.

"You'll be late for work."

Caelan nodded but didn't move.

Something about the air felt… alive.

He raised his hand.

A tiny grain of ash landed on his palm.

For a moment—

it pulsed.

Like a heartbeat.

Then it faded.

Caelan frowned.

"Strange…"

Daren walked over, wiping grease from his hands.

"What is?"

"The ash."

Daren laughed.

"You've been reading too many old books again."

Maybe he was right.

Caelan worked at the city archive, where he spent most days cataloging forgotten documents.

Some of those documents were strange.

Very strange.

Like the journal he found last week.

A crumbling notebook written nearly two hundred years ago.

The last page had only one sentence:

"The ash is not a blessing."

Daren clapped him on the shoulder.

"Come on. The Church inspectors are visiting the district today."

That got Caelan's attention.

The Church of Sacred Ash rarely visited poor districts like this.

"Why?" he asked.

Daren shrugged.

"They say an Ashbound was spotted near the river."

Caelan's stomach tightened.

Ashbound.

People who had used Ash power and lost their minds.

They became monsters.

Everyone knew that.

At least… that was the official story.

A distant bell suddenly rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then the screaming started.

People ran through the street.

"What happened?!" Daren shouted.

A woman stumbled past them, pale and shaking.

"Monster!"

The ground trembled.

Something massive crashed through a nearby alley.

Stone shattered.

A towering figure emerged from the smoke.

Its body looked human once.

But now black cracks ran across its skin, glowing with burning ash.

Its eyes burned like dying stars.

The Ashbound roared.

Caelan felt the sound in his bones.

Fear froze his legs.

The creature lifted its arm.

The ash around them began to swirl.

Like it was responding to the monster.

Like it was alive.

Then—

the creature looked directly at Caelan.

And stopped.

For a single moment…

its burning eyes widened.

As if it recognized him.

The monster whispered something.

A word so quiet no one else heard it.

But Caelan did.

"Ash… Sovereign."

Then the creature screamed—

and the world erupted into chaos
