Adrian didn't mean to touch the Gate.
But the distortion in the air pulsed suddenly, and the vibration in the floor threw him off balance.
His hand brushed the fracture.
The world shattered.
Not with sound.
With silence.
The laboratory vanished.
The fog disappeared.
Even the cold air was gone.
Adrian staggered forward onto solid stone.
"…What?"
He looked around.
The sky above him was wrong.
It was deep violet, almost black, streaked with slow-moving clouds that shimmered like liquid shadow.
Strange constellations burned in the darkness.
Stars that seemed too large.
Too close.
"…Aria?"
No answer.
The air felt different here.
Heavier.
Charged with something he couldn't describe.
Adrian turned slowly.
And froze.
A city stretched across the horizon.
Massive towers of black stone rose from the landscape like jagged teeth.
Rivers of glowing violet light flowed between them, illuminating streets filled with movement.
Thousands of figures moved through the city below.
Some looked human.
Some definitely did not.
Adrian's heart pounded.
"…This has to be Noctyra."
He stood on a wide balcony overlooking the city.
The architecture around him was ancient and elegant.
Dark pillars carved with runes reached toward the sky.
Massive banners of shadow-colored silk drifted silently in the air.
Footsteps approached behind him.
Adrian turned.
Two armored figures walked across the balcony.
Their armor was black metal etched with glowing symbols.
Neither of them looked at Adrian.
They walked straight past him.
As if he wasn't there.
"…Okay," Adrian muttered.
"…so I'm invisible."
The guards stopped near the edge of the balcony.
Both lowered their heads.
"Your Majesty."
Adrian followed their gaze.
And saw her.
A woman stood at the far end of the balcony, looking out over the city.
Long black hair flowed down her back.
The air around her seemed to bend slightly, like heat rising from stone.
She wore dark robes that moved like living shadow.
Faint runes drifted across the fabric.
Above her head floated a crown of black metal.
It did not touch her hair.
It simply hovered there, turning slowly in the air.
Adrian felt his breath catch.
"…Aria."
But this wasn't the Aria he knew.
The calm voice from his computer.
The projection on the screens.
This was something else entirely.
Something older.
Something powerful.
The guards spoke again.
"All hail the Queen of the Deep Shadow."
Aria raised one hand slightly.
The guards straightened immediately.
"You may go," she said.
Her voice was exactly the same.
But here it carried authority that filled the entire balcony.
The guards bowed and walked away.
Adrian stared at her.
"…You ruled this place."
Aria slowly turned.
Her glowing eyes scanned the balcony.
For a moment Adrian assumed she would look straight through him like everyone else had.
Instead—
She stopped.
Her gaze locked directly onto him.
Adrian froze.
"…Wait."
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
Almost curious.
As if she were trying to focus on something just beyond sight.
"…Impossible," she murmured softly.
Adrian felt a chill run down his spine.
"…You can see me?"
The wind shifted across the balcony.
Aria stepped closer.
Her shadow moved across the stone floor like flowing smoke.
She looked directly at Adrian again.
But this time there was uncertainty in her expression.
"…Strange," she said quietly.
Her voice carried across centuries.
"For a moment… I thought I saw someone."
Adrian stared back at her.
"…You did."
But she couldn't hear him.
Aria looked away again.
Her gaze returned to the city.
"The Veil grows thinner," she said softly.
"And soon… the Watchers will notice."
Adrian's chest tightened.
"…Oh."
The memory world around him trembled slightly.
The sky darkened.
And Adrian realized something terrifying.
This wasn't just a memory.
This was the moment before everything went wrong.
