Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 2: A CHANCE ECOUNTER

The morning rush at the hospital in Lagos had begun to slow, but the halls were still alive with movement. Nurses walked briskly from room to room, doctors discussed patient charts, and the faint scent of antiseptic filled the air. For Amara Bello, the rhythm of the hospital was familiar and comforting. It kept her mind focused and her heart guarded.

She stood at the nurse's station reviewing patient records when Lila leaned across the desk with a mischievous grin.

"You know," Lila said, lowering her voice dramatically, "a very handsome man just walked into the hospital."

Amara didn't even look up from the file in her hands. "This is a hospital, Lila. People walk in all the time."

"Yes," Lila said, tapping the desk impatiently, "but not like this one."

Amara sighed and finally glanced up. "You're impossible."

Before Lila could respond, a man stepped into the hallway nearby, speaking with one of the doctors. His voice was calm and confident, carrying a warmth that made people naturally pay attention.

Amara didn't mean to look, but something about the sound of his voice drew her eyes toward him.

He was tall, dressed in a simple light-blue shirt with the sleeves rolled slightly at the elbows. His posture was relaxed, yet purposeful, and when he smiled at the doctor, there was a kindness in his expression that felt genuine.

"That's him," Lila whispered excitedly. "The handsome stranger."

Amara quickly looked back at her files. "You're acting like a teenager."

"Just wait," Lila murmured. "He's coming this way."

Amara resisted the urge to look again, focusing instead on her notes. But a few seconds later, footsteps approached the desk.

"Excuse me," the man said politely. "I'm looking for the rehabilitation ward."

Amara looked up.

For a moment, the busy hospital seemed to fade into the background.

His eyes were warm and steady, and his smile carried an easy sincerity that caught her slightly off guard.

"The rehabilitation ward is down the hall and to the left," she said calmly, pointing in the direction.

"Thank you," he replied.

He paused for a moment, glancing at the name badge pinned to her uniform.

"Nurse Amara," he read with a friendly smile. "Nice to meet you."

Something about the way he said her name made her feel strangely aware of herself.

"Just doing my job," she replied quickly.

"I'm Ethan," he added. "Ethan Cole. I'll be working with some patients here."

Amara nodded politely. "Welcome to the hospital."

Lila, who had been unusually quiet during the exchange, suddenly spoke up.

"Well, Ethan, if you ever need help finding anything else, Nurse Amara here knows the place better than anyone."

Amara shot her a warning look.

Ethan chuckled softly. "I'll keep that in mind."

He thanked them again before walking down the hallway toward the rehabilitation ward.

Lila leaned closer the moment he was out of sight.

"Okay," she whispered dramatically. "Tell me you didn't feel that."

"Feel what?" Amara asked, already returning to her paperwork.

"That spark," Lila said.

Amara shook her head firmly.

"It was just a normal conversation."

But as she continued writing, she found her thoughts drifting back to the stranger with the warm smile.

And somewhere deep inside, a small voice she had long ignored began to whisper again.

Maybe this day at the hospital wouldn't be as ordinary as she thought. ❤️📖
