Chapter 1 - Chapter One: The Wrong Altar

The dress was ivory.

That was the first thing Lyra noticed. Not the flowers — white roses and trailing greenery wound around every pew like the venue had been swallowed by a garden. Not the music — some string quartet piece she didn't recognize, delicate and aching and completely wrong for the moment. Not the two hundred guests seated in perfect rows, their backs to her, their attention fixed forward on the thing she was only now understanding.

The dress was ivory. Her dress. The one she'd described to Adrian on a rainy Tuesday three weeks ago, laughing over wine, saying I've always thought ivory suits me better than white, white feels like trying too hard.

Celeste was wearing it.

Lyra stood at the entrance of the Grand Harlow ballroom — her hand still on the door she'd pushed open, the cold evening air at her back, the warm chandelier light ahead — and she simply didn't move. Couldn't. Her brain kept presenting her with the scene in pieces, like it was rationing the damage. The dress. The altar. The flowers. Adrian. Adrian in a black tuxedo, standing at the front of the room with his shoulders back and his jaw set, the way he looked when he'd made a decision he wasn't going to reverse.

She'd said yes before he finished the sentence.

She'd been so certain. That was the part that kept replaying as she stood at the entrance to this ballroom. Not the betrayal itself — the certainty. The way she'd read him. The string quartet shifted into something slower.

Lyra's eyes found Celeste again. And Celeste — who shouldn't have been able to see the entrance from where she stood, whose attention should have been entirely on the man at her side — turned her head.

That had been the plan — she'd gotten the invitation two days ago from a mutual friend who hadn't understood that Lyra didn't know, that nobody had told her, that the wedding she was being invited to as a guest was meant to be hers. She was too late.

"You shouldn't be here."

The voice at her shoulder was smooth. Practiced. Her uncle Dorian had a voice like that — the kind that sounded like advice and functioned like a warning. He was standing close enough that no one else in the room could hear him, close enough that to any observer they'd look like two family members exchanging quiet pleasantries at the back of a wedding.

Dorian Voss was sixty-one, silver-haired, impeccably dressed, and the most dangerous person in any room he entered — not because of anger, but because of patience. He'd been managing the Voss family's affairs since Lyra was twelve, and he managed them the way a man manages something he's decided belongs to him.

"I know," Lyra said. Her voice came out steadier than she deserved.

"Then I'd suggest—"

"I'm leaving." She said it before he could finish. Because she wasn't going to stand here and let Dorian Voss direct her exit from her own life. "I just needed to see it."

He said nothing. She felt him watching her as she turned back to the room. One more look. One more moment of letting herself understand that this was real, that it was happening, that the man she'd agreed to marry was currently promising himself to her sister in a room full of people who apparently all knew except for her.

Adrian had felt her gaze. Of course he had. He turned his head — just slightly, just enough — and found her at the back of the room.

No guilt. She'd expected guilt. What she got was harder to absorb: his expression went flat and careful, the way it went when he was in a boardroom and someone had introduced a problem he needed to contain. He looked at her the way you look at a complication.

A warning. Not remorse. Not even the decency of shame.

The officiant's voice carried over the music. Do you, Adrian James Whitmore, take Celeste Renée Voss—

Lyra made herself listen. She didn't know why. Some part of her that still needed the full proof of it, the complete and irreversible confirmation, so that later — when she was tempted to doubt herself, when she wondered if she'd misread something, when the grief dressed itself up as confusion — she'd have this. The whole thing. Witnessed.

Her hands were cold. She pressed them against the seams of her bridesmaid dress — blue, she'd been told, such a lovely color on you, Lyra, Celeste had said when the fake invitation arrived, and she hadn't understood then why her sister was suddenly being so warm, so attentive, so thoughtful about color — and she stood very still and she listened.

She thought about the ring. Still on her finger this morning when she'd woken up, before she understood what the invitation meant. She'd taken it off in the car on the way here and put it in the cupholder and driven the rest of the way staring straight ahead.

Adrian said: "I do."

And something in Lyra simply closed.

Not broke. She'd expected it to feel like breaking — the sharp, dramatic fracture of something precious. It didn't feel like that. It felt like a door she'd been standing in front of, holding open, finally swinging shut on its own weight. Quiet. Certain. Done.

She turned around.

The evening air hit her face when she pushed through the entrance doors and she walked down the venue steps without looking back, without running, without giving anyone who might be watching the satisfaction of watching her fall apart. Her heels were loud on the stone. The valets near the parking gate weren't paying attention. The city hummed beyond the gates, indifferent and continuous, unbothered by the specific catastrophe of one woman's life detonating in a ballroom behind her.

She made it to the bottom of the steps.

She made it exactly that far.

"Miss Voss."

Two men in dark suits stepped out of the shadow beside the entrance pillars. Not valets. Not wedding security. The way they moved — deliberate, positioned, one slightly ahead of the other — was something she'd seen exactly once before, outside a courtroom, when she was seventeen and accompanying her father to a deposition.

The one in front reached into his jacket pocket and produced something official-looking. Held it out toward her in the practiced way of someone who'd done this before and expected compliance.

"Miss Voss," he said again. "You're going to need to come with us."

A pause. Two beats of the city's indifferent noise.

"You're under arrest."
