Chapter 1 - The First Raid

"Push forward! The core should be deeper!"

Torchlight lit through the damp tunnels as armored figures rushed down the dungeon corridor. Their boots crushed bones scattered across the ground which were the remains of monsters that had died earlier in the raid.

A goblin shrieked as a sword sliced cleanly through its neck.

"Ha! Too easy!" one of the adventurers laughed.

The adventurers moved deeper into the cavern like predators who had done this a hundred times before.

"Keep your guard up," said the armored leader. His voice echoed off the stone walls. "The guild report said this dungeon recently expanded."

"Good," another adventurer replied with a grin. "More monsters means more cores."

He kicked the goblin corpse aside and crouched beside it.

A dagger slid into the creature's chest.

After a moment he pulled out a small blue crystal.

"There we go," he said, tossing it into a pouch. "Mana core."

"Don't waste time," the leader said. "The deeper floors will have better ones."

They continued forward.

Behind them, goblin corpses lay scattered across the tunnel.

Above them, deep within layers of stone, something began to awaken.

For centuries the dungeon had existed without thought, without awareness. It absorbed mana from the earth, converted it into monsters, and released them into tunnels like a natural process.

But something had changed.

Somewhere within the glowing crystal core, a mind began to form.

And the first thing it felt…

…was pain.

The dungeon sensed the deaths.

Every monster dying in the tunnels sent a faint ripple through the mana network connected to the core. Normally those signals meant nothing.

Now they screamed like alarms, as in mere seconds, dozen's of life signals lost their soul within the hundreds of miles of tunnels beneath the grounds of the city.

The dungeon became aware of what it meant to be alive.

And now it was observing as images formed inside its consciousness.

Adventurers...

Humans...

They moved confidently through the tunnels, cutting down monsters one after another.

One of them kicked a goblin corpse aside.

"Where's the loot? Goblins should have dropped something."

"Relax", another replied while wiping blood from his blade. "We'll hit the deeper floors soon. Better monsters there."

"Yeah", a third voice added. "The guild said this dungeon's been generating good mana crystals lately."

The dungeon watched them carefully.

The goblins didn't attack at first. They were just trying to defend their territory.

But they died easily.

Too easily...

Another group of goblins rushed forward from a side tunnel, screaming in rage.

"Here they come again!" one adventurer grinned.

"Formation!"

The humans moved smoothly.

One raised a shield.

Another stepped forward with a spear.

The goblins collided with the formation, and were slaughtered.

Spears pierced chests.

Swords severed limbs.

The tunnel quickly filled with corpses.

One adventurer crouched beside a dead monster and dug a dagger into its chest.

"Found it", he said.

A faint blue crystal came out from the goblin's body.

"Mana core."

He tossed it into a pouch.

"Not bad", another adventurer said. "Let's keep moving."

The dungeon processed what it had just seen.

Monsters… dying.

Humans… collecting their bodies.

Taking something.

Using them as resources.

A strange sensation formed within the core.

Confusion...

Why???

The dungeon reached out through the mana veins of its tunnels.

It sensed that some monsters were still alive.

Goblins hiding in the shadows.

Wolf monsters pacing deeper in the caverns.

A massive ogre sleeping in a stone chamber.

They were all connected to the dungeon as they were spawned and maintained by it.

Yet the humans cut them down like livestocks.

Another scream echoed through the tunnels.

The dungeon focused again.

The adventurers had reached a wider cavern.

A group of wolves lunged from the darkness.

"Careful!" one adventurer shouted.

Too late.

A wolf tackled him to the ground.

"Get it off!"

The others moved quickly.

A sword pierced the wolf's ribs.

Another blade severed its spine.

The beast collapsed.

The fallen adventurer shoved the corpse away and stood up, breathing heavily.

"Damn monsters."

"Quit complaining", his companion said. "You're fine."

"Tsk. But it still counts as hazard pay."

They laughed.

The dungeon observed the exchange.

The humans showed no hesitation.

No fear.

To them, the monsters were simply enemies… and resources.

The dungeon realized something as it kept watching.

These humans would not stop.

They would keep entering the tunnels.

Keep killing monsters.

Keep taking their cores.

Until there were none left.

The humans laughed as they worked.

"Guild Master's gonna love this haul," one adventurer said while tying his pouch shut.

"Still want that promotion?" another teased.

"Of course."

"Well then let's find the boss monster."

The dungeon felt a sensation.

Danger...

The adventurers were getting closer.

Closer to the center of the dungeon.

Closer to the core itself.

One of the humans studied a map.

"We're near the final chamber," he said.

"Good," the leader replied. "If we destroy the core, the guild will reward us big."

"Think this dungeon has a boss monster?"

"Doesn't matter," the leader said confidently. "We just need to kill it."

The dungeon felt something new.

Fear.

Destroy…

…the core?

If the humans reached the core…

Everything would end.

The dungeon searched through its network of tunnels desperately to figure out how many monsters were still alive.

A pack of wolves.

Three surviving goblins.

And the ogre.

Although there weren't many, but they were still enough.

The dungeon tried something.

It pushed a signal through the mana network.

It didn't contain any words nor thoughts.

It was to create an urge for survival.

The wolves froze in their den.

Then they began moving, not toward the humans but rather around them.

They started circling through side tunnels.

The goblins hiding near the entrance felt something too.

An intense urge to follow, move and hide in order to attack later.

They obeyed without understanding why.

Meanwhile the adventurers continued deeper.

"Stay sharp", their leader said.

The cavern ahead opened into a massive chamber.

"Looks like the boss room", someone whispered.

But the room was empty.

"No monster?" one adventurer asked.

"Strange", another muttered.

The leader frowned.

"Spread out. Check the tunnels."

They didn't notice the wolves moving behind them.

The dungeon was monitoring everything.

For the first time, it reacted and planned.

The wolves crept through the darkness silently.

The goblins climbed narrow passages above the chamber.

One adventurer walked toward a side tunnel.

He never saw the wolf lunging from the shadows.

Teeth clamped around his throat.

"ARGH---!"

The chamber erupted in chaos.

"Behind us!"

"Wolves!"

Adventurers swung their sword in panic.

But the wolves attacked in coordinated bursts.

One created distraction, while another struck.

A goblin dropped from above, stabbing wildly.

"What the hell?!" an adventurer shouted.

"Since when do goblins ambush like this?!"

The leader cut down one wolf with a brutal swing.

But another slammed into him immediately after.

"Fall back!" he ordered.

Too late.

The tunnels erupted with movement, as more wolves poured in.

The goblins attacked from every angle.

The adventurers fought desperately.

But the formation had broken.

One by one, they fell.

The dungeon watched as the final adventurer collapsed onto the stone floor.

Silence returned to the cavern.

Only the surviving monsters remained.

Breathing heavily.

Confused...

The dungeon studied the aftermath.

For the first time…

The invaders were stopped.

Not by stronger monsters.

But with strategy.

A strange sense of clarity spread through the dungeon.

The humans were dangerous.

Far stronger than individual monsters.

If they continue to raiding like this…

Eventually they would reach the core.

The dungeon examined the surviving goblins and wolves.

Weak creatures.

But they followed the instinct signals.

They fought together.

For a moment, a new thought formed within the core.

Perhaps monsters didn't need to be mindless beasts.

Perhaps they could become something more.

Something organized.

Something capable of resisting humans.

The dungeon focused on the surviving goblin that had dropped from the ceiling earlier.

The creature stood over an adventurer's corpse, clutching a bloody dagger.

It looked around nervously.

Then it felt something, albeit faint, but it felt a sense of approval from the dungeon.

The goblin was stunned.

Although, it didn't understand the feeling, but it recognized it.

And deep within the glowing crystal core, the first true decision was made.

Monsters would no longer fight alone.

They would learn.

They would evolve.

And one day…

Humans would no longer walk through these tunnels as hunters.

They would enter as prey.
