Chapter 3 - 3: The Awakening

The air inside the chamber was suffocated.

Cold.

Damp.

Heavy.

The kind of cold that seeped through armor was sank into the bones making muscles tense and movement sluggish.

Calix adjusted the strap of his bag trying to ignore the chill. Every step echoed against the stone walls. A hollow sound that seemed almost alive. The deeper the team went the more impressive the darkness became.

The flickering light of their mana lanterns only made the shadows longer sharper more menacing.

"Stay close," Lyra said calmly, her voice carrying in the chamber. "The floor ahead is unstable. Watch for traps."

Calix nodding though his eyes scanned everything. The jagged rocks the cracks in the floor the faint glimmer of something in the far corners of the room. His heart pounded in his chest.

This was it.

Floor 18 Uncharted, Dangerous. And now they were in the boss chamber. A low growl reverberated through the cavern. It wasn't loud but it was enough to make Calix blood run cold.

He recognized it immediately. Boss Monsters didn't announce themselves with fanfare. They made subtle sounds. Low vibrations. Movements that humans could only just perceive if they were paying attention.

And this route was deliberate controls and waiting. Lyra raised her hand signaling the team to stop. Calix crouched slightly dagger in hand. Garrett raised his shield muscles coiled by the spring. Milo's rifle hummed faintly as energy charges built along the barrel. Sarah twirled her hands summoning small gusts of wind around her fingers.

The growl grew louder. And then the floor trembled. A shadow hoop across the chamber. Not from the ceiling not from the walls but beneath the stone itself. Rocks shifted and crept.

The ground split open in several places. Calix stumbled but caught himself on a jagged stone. The chamber erupted with movement. A creature emerged. It was massive far larger than any monster they had encountered so far.

Its body was muscular yet sleek covered in scales that shimmered faintly in the dim light. Its claws were razor sharp its teeth long and glinting like steel. But the most terrifying thing was its eyes. Golden intelligent predatory.

Eyes that didn't just see they calculated haunted and mocked all at once. "Boss class" Lyra muttered under her breast.

Calix felt his chest tightening. This lwas it. This was the real test. Survival wasn't optional here. Every step every movement every decision could be his last.

Garrett roared and charged. "I'll hold it."

The creature's head snapped toward him with lightning speed. Its claws struck the ground creating shock waves that pushed Garrett back 2 steps. The impact was stronger than any strike he had faced before. He adjusted his stance and raised his shield again bracing.

Calix moved instinctively. Step forward step back keep your distance. Keep your eyes on it. The creature lunged toward Garrett but Milo fired a charged energy shot. The beam struck the monster in the shoulders but it barely flinched.

The boss's speed was terrifying. It wasn't just brute strength it was precision intelligence and instinct. Combined.

Calix hands shook slightly as he gripped his dagger. I have to do something.

A slash of wind knocked him off balance. Sarah's spell had hit one of the monster's claws as it swiped across the floor slowing it momentarily. Calix seized the opening and ran forward darting behind a large rock pillar for cover.

The boss's gaze turned toward him and he froze. That golden stare felt like it was boring into his soul. This was different from any ordinary monster.

Ordinary beasts attacked mindlessly this one. It was thinking predicting. A low growl became a roar. The sound shook the chamber.

Calix felt his vision tremble from the vibrations. Rocks and debris fell from the ceiling. "Fall back!" Lyra shouted.

"Everyone regroup." Garret pushed forward despite the command, shield raised. He blocked a massive claw swipe. Sparks flying as metal scraped against scale. The impact sent him staggering backward but his stance held.

Milo fired another shot this one more precise hitting the monster's eye. A screech rang out deafening and filled with pain but not enough to stop it. Calix ducked behind another pillar adrenaline surging through him. His heart beat thumped like a drum in his ears.

He had to do something, anything. He remembered the dagger's edge in his hands. Not much against a boss but he had to try.

The monster pivoted scanning for movement. Calix exhales slowly and sprinted dodging a swipe from the boss's tail that smashed a chunk of the stone floor behind him. He rolled to the sides blades slashing through the air hitting nothing. Just the echo of metal against nothing. It lunged at its suddenness.

Reflexes kicked in. He rolled under the claws feeling the wind of its strike graze the top of his jacket. The monster's eyes locked onto him. It's not attacking blindly it's learning. Calix mind raced. I can't fight it like the others. I'm not strong enough.

Then instinct took over. Step forward, Dodge stepped forward.

Dodge keep moving keep surviving. The monster lunged again. This time he fainted a step to the left then pivoted around a rock driving his dagger into the base of his leg.

Sparks flew. The monster roared and kicked sending Calix flying across the chamber. Pain exploded across his shoulder as he hit the ground. Hard scraping along stones gritting his teeth rolled back to his feet. Blood trickled from a cut above his brow.

He could hear Lyra and the others fighting shouts attacks, spells but the sound felt distant. Everything focused on him and the boss.

The golden eyes were on him again. And then it paused.

Paused?

The boss tilted his head as if intrigued. Calix noticed the twitch of his claws the way it shifted weight carefully almost deliberately. Something inside him sparked a strange warmth like a low hum in his chest.

"Don't... die" he muttered under his breath. He felt energy surge through his body. Not from manna not from skill Something else. A latent force buried under years of being weak flickered away. The boss lunged one last time.

Calix dodged instinctively twisting in the air.mAnd then before he fully realized what happened his dagger struck again. This time it connected the a searing pain shot through the monster's leg. It staggered. Its golden eyes widened and then it stopped.

For a moment the world froze.

Calix felt something strange warmth in his chest spreading down his arm. A faint glow along his dagger and a voice. A low whisper echoing inside his head.

[Boss skill acquisition available.]

[You may copy one skill from the defeated boss.]

Calix froze. What is this?

The monsters roar turned into a shriek. Its body trembled. It shook violently as if struggling to maintain control. Calix hands shook as he gripped the dagger. He didn't understand what was happening but instinct screamed at him.

Kill it.

He thrusts the dagger into the monster's chest. With everything he had energy pulsed from the blade.

Light enveloped the creature. It screamed once long and piercing and then fell silent. Calix staggered back breathing heavily. The monster collapsed body twitching, the Golden eyes dimmed... and finally went dark.

For a long moment no one moved. Then Garret's voice broke the silence.

"That... Was insane." Lyra was still catching her breath.

"You.. did you do that?" Calix shook his head staring at the fallen boss.

His body hummed with a strange energy. Pain adrenaline and something else. Power and then the whisper returns.

[Player didn't select in time, system will pick one for you]

[Skilled acquisition complete.]

[You have obtained: Beast Leg Strength- Boss Passive skill]

Calix stumbled back. Breathless trying to process it.

Skill passive? from the boss?

The other stared at him bewildered. Even Lyra's composed demeanor faltered. Milo lowered his rifle.

"Wait... you... you just killed it?" He said "alone?" Calix shook his head. "I didn't... I just... I"

He didn't know how to explain it. He didn't understand it himself. All he knew was that his body felt different stronger faster. Every step he took felt lighter more precise. His vision was sharper reflexes enhancing.

The other espers gathered around his caution keeping an eye on the fallen boss. Lyra's eyes narrowed. "We need to move. More monsters could be attracted by the energy release, Calix... Stay close and tell me everything that just happened."

Calix swallowed, still trembling. "I... I don't know how to explain it..."
