Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Truth He Shouldn't Tell

The sound outside the safe house didn't come again.

But the silence that followed was worse.

Stella could feel Ethan's grip tighten around her hand as he listened carefully, his entire body tense. The softness from moments ago—the warmth from their kiss—had vanished. In its place stood a man who looked ready for war.

"Stay behind me," he said quietly.

Stella swallowed but didn't argue.

Ethan moved toward the window with slow, calculated steps, his eyes scanning the darkness outside. The night was thick and still, the forest surrounding the safe house swaying slightly in the cold wind.

Nothing moved.

No headlights.

No footsteps.

No voices.

But Stella had learned something in the past few days—danger rarely announced itself.

"Do you see anything?" she whispered.

Ethan shook his head.

"That doesn't mean no one is there."

The words made her stomach twist.

She wrapped her arms around herself as the reality of the situation sank in again.

Her life had been simple just days ago.

Now she was hiding in a remote safe house with a mysterious man who had enemies powerful enough to track them anywhere.

And yet the most confusing part of all wasn't the danger.

It was him.

Ethan.

Stella watched him carefully as he stood by the window, his tall frame tense, his jaw tight. The dim light of the room cast shadows across his face, making him look even more unreadable.

Finally she spoke.

"Ethan."

He glanced at her.

"Yes?"

"We need to talk."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"About what?"

"Everything."

He sighed quietly but stepped away from the window.

"You should try to sleep."

Stella let out a soft, humorless laugh.

"Sleep?" she repeated. "After everything that's happened tonight?"

Ethan didn't respond.

Instead, he walked toward the kitchen counter and poured himself a glass of water.

Stella watched him carefully.

"You said we weren't alone," she continued. "But you didn't sound surprised."

He took a slow sip before answering.

"I wasn't."

Her chest tightened.

"So you expected someone to come?"

"Yes."

The calmness in his voice made something inside her snap.

"That's exactly what I mean!" she said, frustration rising. "You keep acting like all of this is normal!"

"It is normal for me."

"That's the problem!"

The room fell silent again.

Ethan set the glass down slowly.

Then he turned to face her fully.

His expression was serious.

"You want the truth, Stella?"

"Yes."

"Even if you don't like it?"

"Especially then."

He studied her face for a long moment.

As if deciding something.

Then he spoke.

"When we met on that cliff…"

Stella felt her heart skip.

"…it really was an accident."

She blinked.

"What?"

Ethan continued quietly.

"I wasn't looking for you that day."

"But you saved me."

"Yes."

"From someone who was following me."

"Yes."

Her confusion deepened.

"Then how could it be an accident?"

Ethan ran a hand through his hair.

"Because before that day, I had only been watching you."

The words hit her like cold water.

"You… what?"

"I knew who you were."

Her pulse began to race.

"How?"

"That's complicated."

"No," she said firmly. "It's not. Either you explain it or you don't."

Ethan looked at her with something close to regret.

"You were mentioned in a file."

The air in the room seemed to freeze.

"A file?"

"Yes."

"What kind of file?"

"One connected to the list I told you about."

Fear slowly crept into Stella's chest.

"You're saying I was on that list?"

"No."

"Then why was I in the file?"

Ethan hesitated.

"I don't know."

She stared at him in disbelief.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"It's the truth."

Stella began pacing the room.

Her thoughts were spinning wildly now.

"So let me understand this," she said slowly. "You secretly knew who I was before we met."

"Yes."

"You were watching me."

"Yes."

"And now you're telling me the first time we met was an accident?"

"It was."

She stopped pacing.

Her eyes locked onto his.

"Or maybe," she said quietly, "you were sent to find me."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"That's not true."

"How do I know that?"

"You don't."

The honesty in his voice only made things worse.

Stella felt anger rising in her chest.

"Maybe you appearing in my life is exactly what put me in danger."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"You think I'm the reason people are after you?"

"I don't know what to think anymore!"

Her voice cracked slightly.

"Before you showed up, my life was normal."

"That's not true."

The words came out sharper than she expected.

Stella froze.

"What did you say?"

Ethan seemed to realize he had said too much.

"Nothing."

"No," she said slowly. "You said my life wasn't normal before you."

His silence confirmed it.

A cold realization crept through her.

"Ethan…"

Her voice was quieter now.

"Who exactly am I to these people?"

He looked away.

"That's not something I can answer."

"Or something you won't answer?"

Both.

But he didn't say that.

Stella felt a strange mix of emotions twisting inside her.

Fear.

Confusion.

Suspicion.

And something far more dangerous.

She still wanted him.

Even now.

Even after everything he had just admitted.

"Maybe I should leave," she said softly.

Ethan's head snapped toward her.

"No."

The sharpness in his voice surprised them both.

"Why not?" she asked.

"Because it's not safe."

"Or because you need to keep watching me?"

He stepped closer suddenly.

Close enough that the tension between them returned instantly.

"You think I'm using you?"

"I think I don't know you."

His voice lowered.

"You know more about me than anyone alive."

"That's not saying much."

Silence stretched between them again.

Then Ethan did something unexpected.

He reached for her hand.

Stella's breath caught as his fingers wrapped around hers.

"You want to know the truth?" he said quietly.

"Yes."

"The reason I kept watching you… wasn't because someone ordered me to."

"Then why?"

His eyes softened in a way she had never seen before.

"Because the first time I saw you… you were standing on the edge of that cliff, laughing like the world couldn't touch you."

Stella blinked in surprise.

"You remember that?"

"I remember everything."

Her heart began to race again.

"You barely knew me."

"I know."

"Then why—"

"Because," he interrupted softly, "people like me don't meet people like you."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you're light."

"And you're not?"

Ethan gave a quiet smile.

"I'm the kind of man who lives in the dark."

Stella studied his face carefully.

"Then why stay near me?"

His fingers tightened slightly around hers.

"Maybe I wanted to know what the light felt like."

Her chest fluttered.

For a moment the danger outside the walls didn't exist.

There was only him.

Only the warmth of his hand.

Only the quiet intensity in his eyes.

"Ethan…" she whispered.

But before she could finish—

A sudden sharp click echoed from the front door.

Both of them froze.

Ethan's entire expression changed instantly.

Cold.

Focused.

Deadly.

He pulled Stella behind him.

And whispered one chilling sentence.

"They found us."
