Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1 -THE DREAM THAT WOULD NOT DIE

The gunshot echoed across the training field.

"Run!"

Dust rose into the early morning air as dozens of young men burst forward, boots pounding against the red earth. The sun had barely risen, yet sweat already soaked their shirts.

Some ran with confidence.

Others ran with fear.

But one of them ran like his life depended on it.

Suleiman Ibrahim.

His lungs burned as he pushed forward, ignoring the pain in his legs.

"Faster!" the instructor shouted. "This is the Nigerian Defence Academy, not a playground!"

The words struck him like a challenge.

This is where I belong.

For years, Suleiman had imagined this moment—standing among hundreds of young men fighting for the same dream: to become officers in the Nigerian Army.

But dreams were easy.

Reality was not.

"Last lap!" the instructor yelled.

Some candidates slowed down, exhausted.

Suleiman didn't.

Instead, he pushed harder.

His mind flashed with memories of every morning he had woken before sunrise… every lonely run… every moment people had laughed at him.

"You? NDA?" they had said.

"You better find something easier."

But Suleiman had never believed them.

He crossed the finish line and bent over, breathing heavily.

Around him, other candidates collapsed onto the grass.

For a brief moment, hope filled his chest.

Maybe… just maybe…

Later that afternoon, the candidates gathered around a large notice board.

A sheet of paper had been pinned to it.

The final list.

The names of those who had passed.

Excited voices filled the air.

"My name is there!"

"I made it!"

"Yes!"

Suleiman stepped forward slowly.

His heart pounded louder with every step.

He scanned the list.

Top to bottom.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

His name was not there.

For a moment, everything around him went silent.

The celebration of others felt distant, like noise coming from another world.

He stepped back from the board, staring at the ground.

"Hey."

Suleiman looked up.

A tall young man stood beside him with a confident smile.

"I guess you didn't make it," the man said.

Suleiman said nothing.

"My name is Tunde," the man continued proudly, pointing at the list. "Tunde Balogun. I passed."

Suleiman glanced at the board again.

And there it was.

Balogun, Tunde A.

Tunde folded his arms.

"You look like someone who worked really hard to get here."

Suleiman forced a small smile.

"I did."

Tunde shrugged.

"Well… not everyone can be an officer."

Then he walked away to join the celebrating crowd.

Suleiman stood there for a long moment.

The sun slowly sank toward the horizon.

His dream felt like it had slipped through his fingers.

But deep inside him, something refused to die.

Later that night, as he lay on the thin mattress in his small room back home, he stared at the ceiling.

His phone buzzed with messages from friends asking how it went.

He didn't reply.

After a while, he sat up.

Quietly, he whispered to himself.

"I'm not done."

The road had just begun.

And Suleiman Ibrahim had no idea how many times life would test that promise.

Three failures.

Years of waiting.

Unexpected love.

And a path he never saw coming.

But one thing was already certain.

The dream inside him was stronger than defeat.
