Chapter 7 - 7 - Unpaid overtime

"Follow me."

Reluctant as I was, I didn't really have a choice. I swallowed the curses that were about to leave my mouth and obediently walked. To think I'd end up getting involved with a psycho who'd do all this over a game.

Many dangerous thoughts crossed my mind as we walked out the other side of the alley.

"Ahem… To be completely honest with you… I have a history of drug abuse, I'm a raging alcoholic that can't get by a day without at least a few shots, my diet consists of purely fried food, of course, paired with-"

"I'm not going to steal your organs."

"Okay."

My incessant rambling was shut down immediately. He sounded a bit taken aback but also annoyed, which I chose to ignore. The air around us turned awkward once more. Fuck, I could hear a pin drop… Let's just count sheep.

All of a sudden, I bumped into his back.

"Why'd you stop so suddenly?"

I grumbled before paying attention to where he had brought me. No way…

"Cause we're here."

He grinned while pushing open a door.

The memories of my college days came flooding back. The days where I would practically live on [Requiem]. I could almost barf right now. Wait a second… Don't tell me this game addict is being serious?

Just why on earth did he bring me to an internet cafe?

He sat as if he belonged there and naturally, I cautiously sat in the cubicle next to him. I glanced at his screen and saw an icon that sent shivers down my spine. Unfortunately, my suspicions were right. This bastard was really making me do this…

"Make an account."

"Is this really what you want?"

No, seriously. Who in their right mind blackmails a stranger to play a game.

"Why? Got something else to offer?"

His arrogant tone pissed me off.

"I'd rather you just ask for money…"

He looked at me with disbelief as he mumbled something incoherent.

"Do I look like I lack money? Shut up and just make an account, I'll leave you alone if you complete the quest I'm doing."

Why this rude little…! I was fuming. To think I'd be working overtime in a place like this with such an insufferable brat. I sighed before repeating the same old boring action, although this time I was not using a ghost account.

[ ☆ WELCOME TO [REQUIEM] ☆

Please select a username, dear player! ]

I looked blankly at the introduction screen and carelessly typed a name, not like I'll ever use this account again.

[ Username 'qwertyui' accepted, please customise your character! ]

Once again, I pressed on the default character, and at last, it was time to pick a class. My cursor hovered over the 'assassin' class as it had been the most tried out of all the classes. If I were to roughly estimate… I'd probably tested it around 10,000 times.

I heard the sharp sound of the student kissing his teeth from next to me. I peeked at his monitor. It seems he's a 'mage'.

"Mister, do you lack common sense? I'll obviously be doing a mage's quest so why'd you pick the assassin?"

"It's fine as long as I do the quest right?"

I focused back on my monitor, washing out his voice. Kids really need to learn how to respect their elders…

Tap. Tap. Tap Tap Tap Tap Tap Tap Tap TapTap Tap Tap Tap.

I aggressively skipped through the tutorial before starting the hidden quest. This bastard chose a hard one. A beginner wouldn't even know where to find it. Tsk, he's really trying to give me a hard time isn't he?

[ ☆ HIDDEN QUEST ☆ ]

*Hunt down the golem that

resides behind the mountain

 in under 30 minutes.

*Party required 1/1

*Rewards hidden.

[ ☆ CONFIRM ☆ ]

I clicked 'confirm' and began working.

Obnoxious clicking sounds continued to echo to the point where it just sounded like I was messing around. Well, usually I wouldn't even play this fast but I have places to be. My precious beer is waiting for me…

"Hey are you crazy? Play properly you bastard."

This kid seems to be allergic to minding his own business. I'm starting to get annoyed for real this time. The rudeness gets to a point…

"I am playing properly, it's fine as long as I clear the quest right?"

Perfectly on cue, the 'quest complete' screen popped up, the stupidly high pitched congratulations song playing in the background.

"There."

"Wha-"

He popped his head into my cubicle and stared down the monitor. I took this as a sign to escape while he's distracted. I opened the door, the bell ringing above me. I think I heard him say something before I left but couldn't quite make it out. Whatever, not my problem.

I quickly rushed to my car, recalling his previous promise of 'leaving me alone'.

Fuck yeah!!!!! I'm finally free!!!!! I drove home in excitement while internally celebrating. Honestly, it was a pretty good pay off, I simply worked a bit of overtime and got a wacko off my back. Perhaps I'm not as unlucky as I thought I was.

I cracked open a can of beer. Blegh. It's gone lukewarm… Curse that weirdo. Whatever. I gulped the rest down, making a pact with myself to never, and I mean never go anywhere near that convenience store again before preparing for bed.

I dozed off pretty soon considering everything I went through today.
