Chapter 1 - The Night He saved me

Title: The Night He Saved Me

My name is Soumi. I live in a quiet town surrounded by fields, old houses, and stories that people whisper only after sunset. During the day, my town feels peaceful and ordinary. Children play in the streets, shops stay busy, and life moves slowly. But at night, everything changes. The roads become empty, the wind grows colder, and the shadows seem to hide secrets.

I never believed in ghost stories before. I always thought they were just old tales people told to scare children. But one night changed everything.

It was a cold evening in late winter. The sky was dark, and a thin fog covered the streets. I had stayed late at my friend's house to finish some work, and by the time I started walking home, it was already past 9 PM. The road I took was the shortest way home, but it passed by an old abandoned house that everyone in town avoided.

People said strange things about that house. Some said they saw lights inside even though nobody lived there. Others said they heard footsteps and whispers in the night. I never paid attention to those stories.

But that night, I wish I had.

As I walked down the empty road, the fog grew thicker. The streetlights flickered softly, creating long shadows on the ground. The air felt strangely cold, and the silence around me made my heart uneasy.

Suddenly, I felt something strange.

It felt like someone was watching me.

I looked behind me, but the road was empty. There was no one there. Only the fog and the faint yellow light from the streetlamp.

I tried to calm myself. "It's nothing, Soumi," I whispered. "You're just imagining things."

I continued walking, but after a few steps, I heard it.

Footsteps.

Slow. Soft. But clearly following me.

My heart started beating faster. I turned around again, but once again, I saw nothing.

The footsteps stopped.

For a moment, everything was silent again. Only the wind moved through the trees.

I began walking faster. My hands were shaking slightly as I took out my phone and called my boyfriend, Arjun. He was the one person who always made me feel safe.

After a few rings, he answered.

"Hello, Soumi?"

"Arjun… I think someone is following me," I said nervously.

"Where are you?" he asked immediately.

"I'm near the old abandoned house."

There was a short silence on the phone.

"Stay where you are," he said firmly. "I'm coming."

His voice made me feel a little better, but the fear around me didn't disappear.

I looked ahead and realized something terrible.

Without noticing, I had walked right in front of the abandoned house.

The building looked darker than the night itself. The broken windows stared like empty eyes, and the old gate creaked slowly in the wind.

Suddenly, the streetlight above me went out.

Everything around me fell into darkness.

My phone screen was the only light.

Then I heard the footsteps again.

This time they were closer.

Much closer.

My breathing became fast as I slowly turned around.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then, through the fog, a tall shadow appeared.

It didn't walk like a normal person. Its movements were slow and unnatural, as if it was floating slightly above the ground.

My body froze.

The shadow came closer, and I saw something that made my blood run cold.

Its eyes.

Two faint glowing eyes stared directly at me.

I tried to move, but my legs felt weak with fear. My phone slipped from my hand and fell to the ground.

The shadow moved even closer.

A cold wind surrounded me, and I heard a strange whisper.

"Stay…"

The voice sounded distant and hollow, like it was coming from far away.

Tears filled my eyes as fear took over my mind. I felt completely alone.

Suddenly, I heard someone shouting.

"Soumi!"

I turned toward the sound.

Through the fog, I saw Arjun running toward me.

Relief flooded my heart.

"Arjun!" I cried.

But the moment he came closer, something strange happened.

The shadow suddenly became darker and larger, as if it was angry.

The wind grew stronger. The old gate of the house slammed loudly behind me.

For a second, it felt like the darkness itself was alive.

Arjun quickly reached me and pulled me behind him.

"Stay behind me," he said.

I grabbed his arm tightly, trembling with fear.

The shadow moved closer again. The glowing eyes stared at us both.

Arjun picked up my phone from the ground and turned on the flashlight.

The bright light cut through the fog and pointed directly at the shadow.

For a moment, the shape became clearer.

It looked like a tall figure wearing torn clothes, its face pale and empty.

The eyes glowed faintly in the darkness.

I felt like my heart would stop.

Then something unexpected happened.

The moment the light touched it, the shadow let out a low, painful sound.

It stepped back.

Arjun raised the light higher and stepped forward bravely.

"Leave us alone," he said firmly.

The shadow moved again, but this time it looked weaker.

The bright light seemed to hurt it.

Arjun kept the flashlight pointed directly at it.

Slowly, the shadow began to fade into the fog.

Within seconds, it disappeared completely.

The wind suddenly stopped.

The silence returned.

For a few moments, neither of us spoke.

Then Arjun turned to me.

"Are you okay?" he asked gently.

I nodded, though my hands were still shaking.

Without saying anything else, he pulled me into a warm hug.

In that moment, all the fear inside me slowly melted away.

"I was so scared," I whispered.

"I know," he said softly. "But you're safe now."

We quickly left that road and walked toward the main street where the lights were brighter and people were still around.

Even though everything looked normal again, I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened.

Before that night, I didn't believe in ghosts.

But I knew what I saw.

And I knew one more thing.

That night could have ended very differently.

If Arjun hadn't come when he did… I don't know what would have happened.

As we reached my house, he held my hand and smiled.

"No matter what happens," he said, "I'll always protect you."

I smiled back, feeling my heart calm again.

That terrifying night showed me something important.

Sometimes love isn't just about sweet moments and happy days.

Sometimes love is the light that protects you when the darkness comes.

And on the darkest night of my life, my boyfriend became that light.
