Chapter 19: The Ambush
Elias didn't turn around. He saw the reflection in the dusty glass of a framed photo.
It wasn't Julianna. It was Sergeant Miller—or rather, the man Elias thought was dead.
"The morgue is a great place to hide if you know the ME," Miller said, his face shadowed. He was holding a shotgun. "Your father was a good cop who did bad things, Elias. But Julianna? She's a bad person who does 'good' things for the cameras."
"You faked your death," Elias said, his mind re-cataloging the morgue scene. The brass key. The capsule. It was all a setup.
"I had to get you out of the precinct so Julianna could plant the evidence in your locker," Miller explained. "But you weren't supposed to find the recording. That wasn't part of the plan."
"Whose plan, Miller? Yours? Or the Senator's?"
"The Senator is a pawn," Miller laughed. "There's a fourth player, Elias. The one who actually paid your father. The one who Julianna is really working for."
Outside, the blue and red lights began to swirl against the curtains. The "Clean-up Crew" wasn't mercenaries this time. It was the entire Seattle Police Department.
