The letter arrived at the designation registry on a Friday morning.
Damian didn't know about it until Monday.
His lawyer — a woman named Sandra Osei who had been handling the registry challenge with the particular focused calm of someone who had seen everything and was no longer surprised by any of it — called him at eleven fifteen while he was shelving the new arrivals.
"I need you to come in this afternoon," she said.
"What happened."
A pause. Sandra didn't pause often. "A formal inquiry has been filed against your registry case."
Damian set the books down on the shelf.
"By who," he said.
"A party named Elliot Voss. On behalf of the Voss family." Another pause. "Do you know that name?"
The bookshop was very quiet.
"Yes," Damian said.
