Chapter 4 - Chapter 5 – The Doctor

Chapter 5 – The Doctor

The fog lingered over London well into the afternoon.

Thomas Hale stood outside St. Bartholomew's Charity Hospital, studying the tall stone building before him. It looked respectable—clean windows, polished brass handles, and neatly dressed nurses moving quickly through the entrance.

It was a different world from the filthy alleys of Whitechapel.

Yet Thomas couldn't shake the thought that his investigation had led him here for a reason.

Two murders.

Both precise.

Both quiet.

Both suggesting the killer understood human anatomy better than most men.

Which meant the killer might be someone trained in medicine.

Thomas adjusted his coat and stepped inside.

The hospital smelled strongly of antiseptic and soap. The floors were polished, and the white walls reflected the afternoon light pouring through tall windows.

A young nurse approached him politely.

"Can I help you, sir?"

Thomas showed his press card.

"I'm looking for Dr. Elias Whitmore."

The nurse nodded.

"Dr. Whitmore is one of our surgeons. He's currently finishing a consultation."

"I'll wait."

She gestured toward a wooden bench along the wall.

Thomas sat down, watching the hospital staff move back and forth through the corridor. Doctors walked quickly with serious expressions while patients sat quietly beside family members.

Everything here felt controlled.

Precise.

Almost surgical.

After several minutes, the door at the end of the hall opened.

A tall man stepped out.

He looked to be in his mid-forties, with neatly combed dark hair and sharp, intelligent eyes. His coat was spotless, and his movements were calm and confident.

The nurse approached him.

"Dr. Whitmore, this gentleman is asking for you."

The doctor turned his attention to Thomas.

"Yes?"

Thomas stood.

"Dr. Whitmore?"

"I am."

"Thomas Hale. I'm a reporter for The London Herald."

Whitmore studied him calmly.

"And what does the press want with a hospital surgeon?"

Thomas spoke carefully.

"I'm investigating the murders in Whitechapel."

For the first time, the doctor's expression changed slightly.

"Terrible business," Whitmore said quietly.

"You've heard about them?"

"Of course. The entire city has."

Thomas nodded.

"I've been speaking with police officers and witnesses. Some believe the killer might have medical knowledge."

Whitmore raised an eyebrow.

"Medical knowledge?"

"The wounds are very precise."

The doctor folded his hands behind his back.

"Mr. Hale, you must understand that surgery and murder are very different professions."

"Of course."

Whitmore smiled slightly.

"But I suppose a reporter must follow every theory."

Thomas watched him closely.

"Have you ever worked in Whitechapel, Doctor?"

"Yes," Whitmore replied calmly.

"This hospital treats many patients from the East End."

"And you're familiar with the conditions there?"

Whitmore nodded.

"Unfortunately, yes. Poverty, disease, violence. Whitechapel is a tragic place."

Thomas leaned forward slightly.

"Do you think someone with medical training could commit those crimes?"

Whitmore paused for a moment.

Then he spoke slowly.

"A man trained in anatomy would certainly understand where to cut."

Thomas felt a chill run through him.

Whitmore continued speaking in a calm, thoughtful voice.

"But that does not mean a doctor would do such a thing."

Thomas closed his notebook.

"Of course."

Whitmore glanced toward the hospital corridor.

"If you'll excuse me, I have patients waiting."

Thomas stepped aside.

"Thank you for your time, Doctor."

Whitmore nodded politely and walked away down the hall.

Thomas watched him go.

There was nothing obviously suspicious about the man.

He was calm.

Professional.

Respected.

Exactly the kind of person no one would suspect.

Thomas stepped outside the hospital again, the cold London air hitting his face.

Something about the conversation bothered him.

Whitmore had not seemed shocked by the murders.

If anything…

he had seemed interested.

Thomas looked back at the hospital building.

If the killer truly understood anatomy…

then Dr. Elias Whitmore might be the most dangerous man in London.

And Thomas had just shaken his hand.
