Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Temple of Quiet Echoes

The inside of the temple smelled like rain, dust, and time. Liora stepped carefully over the cracked threshold, holding the lantern high as its warm glow pushed back the darkness inch by inch. The light slid across broken columns and collapsed stone arches, revealing fragments of carvings along the walls. The Moon Temple had once been beautiful. Even now, in ruin, its bones carried a strange elegance. Tall pillars shaped like twisting vines reached toward a ceiling that no longer fully existed. Pieces of marble floor lay shattered across the ground, and moonlight spilled through the gaps above, creating pale pools of silver across the temple hall. The traveler stepped in behind her. For a moment neither of them spoke. The silence inside the ruin felt different from the forest. Outside, the woods whispered constantly. Here, the quiet felt heavy, like the temple was listening. Liora turned slowly, scanning the space. "Alright," she said quietly. "We're here. No monsters chasing us, no ghosts yet. That's promising." The man walked farther into the hall, his eyes moving across the carvings as if searching for something familiar. "You've been here before," Liora said. He paused. "Yes." "I knew it." "How?" "You stopped being nervous the moment we walked inside." He gave a small smile. "Observation skills like that will keep you alive." "I intend to stay alive," she replied dryly. "Which brings us back to my earlier question." He glanced over his shoulder. "Which one?" "Who are you, and why are we in a cursed ruin at midnight?" He hesitated. Liora planted her hands on her hips. "Oh no," she said. "You do not get to drag me into a haunted temple and then be mysterious." The man laughed quietly. "Fair enough." He turned fully toward her. "My name is Caelan." "Liora." "Nice to meet you properly, Liora." "Still waiting for the rest." Caelan walked toward one of the pillars and brushed dust from a carved symbol. A crescent moon surrounded by flowing lines that looked almost like waves. "My family once protected this place," he said. Liora blinked. "Protected it from what?" "From people who wanted what was hidden inside." "That makes it sound even worse." He didn't argue with that. Liora stepped closer to the pillar and examined the carving. "I've lived near this forest my whole life," she said. "No one ever mentioned temple guardians." "That's because my family disappeared a long time ago." The words hung in the air. "Disappeared how?" she asked carefully. Caelan's expression darkened slightly. "No one knows for certain." "That's comforting." "But we believe it had something to do with the temple itself." Liora rubbed her temples slowly. "So let me get this straight." "Go ahead." "Your mysterious family guarded a mysterious temple that hides a mysterious object that might have destroyed your entire bloodline." "That's… a dramatic way of saying it." "Is it inaccurate?" He sighed. "No." Liora looked around the hall again. "You know," she said thoughtfully, "I had a very normal evening planned." "Oh?" "Yes. I was going to gather herbs, go home, and sleep." "And instead?" "I ran from a wraith and broke into a legendary ruin with a stranger." "Adventurous." "Terrible decision making." Caelan smiled faintly. Then something caught his attention. He moved toward the center of the temple where a large circular stone platform stood partially buried beneath fallen debris. Liora followed. "What is it?" she asked. "This shouldn't be here." "That doesn't sound good." Caelan crouched down and pushed aside a slab of broken marble. Underneath, faint glowing lines became visible. Liora knelt beside him, raising the lantern. The carvings formed a massive circle etched into the stone floor. Symbols spiraled inward toward a small depression at the center, and the lines glowed. Soft silver light pulsed through them like a slow heartbeat. Liora's eyes widened. "Okay," she whispered. "That definitely wasn't here before." Caelan frowned. "This seal should be dormant." "Define dormant." "Inactive." "Because it looks extremely active." He brushed more dust away and the symbols brightened slightly. Liora leaned closer. "Are those runes?" "Yes." "Do you know what they say?" "Not entirely." "That's also not comforting." He studied the center of the circle. "There should be something here." "Like what?" "A relic." "What kind of relic?" He looked at her. "The Moonheart." Liora stared. "That sounds very powerful and very dangerous." "It's both." "And you want it." "I need it." "Why?" Caelan hesitated again. Liora pointed at him. "You're doing the mysterious thing again." "I'm deciding how much truth to tell." She crossed her arms. "Try all of it." He opened his mouth to answer, but suddenly the temple floor trembled. Both of them froze. Dust drifted down from the broken ceiling. "What was that?" Liora whispered. Caelan stood slowly. "That wasn't supposed to happen." "That sentence keeps getting worse every time you say it." The glowing circle suddenly pulsed brighter. Lines of silver light raced through the carved runes and then the ground cracked. A deep grinding sound echoed through the temple as the center of the platform slowly began to sink. Liora grabbed Caelan's arm. "Tell me that's normal." "It isn't." The stone circle split open, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness beneath the temple. Cold air rose from below, ancient and silent and waiting. The glow from the runes slowly faded and the shaking stopped. The temple became still again. Liora stared at the staircase. "Please tell me that wasn't there before." "It wasn't." "So the temple just opened." "Yes." "That feels like a trap." Caelan looked down into the darkness. "Or an invitation." She groaned loudly. "Of course you would say that." He glanced at her. "You don't have to come." Liora stared at him like he had just suggested the sky might be green. "Oh no," she said. "What?" "You dragged me into this. If something horrible happens down there, I'm going to witness it." "That's your reasoning?" "Yes." He laughed quietly again. "You're very brave." "I'm extremely curious." "Those two things are often the same." Liora lifted the lantern and walked toward the staircase. "Well," she said, peering down into the darkness, "if ancient magical temples are opening secret underground passages, I suppose we should see what's hiding down there." Caelan joined her at the edge of the stairs. For a moment they stood side by side, staring into the unknown. "Ready?" he asked. Liora exhaled slowly. "Not even slightly." Then she stepped onto the first stone stair, and together they began to descend into the hidden heart of the Moon Temple.
