Chapter 1 - When the Fog Came

The city never noticed children like Kael.

People walked past him every day—office workers with tired eyes, students laughing loudly, parents pulling their children along the crowded sidewalks. Their footsteps blended into the constant noise of the street.

No one looked down long enough to see the boy sitting quietly beside the bakery window.

Warm light spilled through the glass, and the smell of fresh bread drifted into the cold evening air.

Kael swallowed hard.

His stomach twisted painfully, but he forced himself to ignore it. Hunger had become something familiar, like the chill in the wind or the rough pavement beneath him.

Beside him lay the only friend he had in the world.

Rex.

The large black dog lifted his head slowly, his deep brown eyes watching Kael with quiet concern. His fur was messy and rough, but there was strength in the way he moved and loyalty in the way he stayed close.

Rex nudged Kael's hand with his nose.

Kael looked down at him and gave a small smile.

"I know," he murmured softly.

He scratched behind the dog's ear.

"You're hungry too."

Rex huffed gently, his tail tapping the pavement.

Kael chuckled quietly.

"You're always hungry."

Suddenly Rex stood up and trotted away, disappearing around the corner of the street.

Kael watched him go without worry.

He already knew what Rex was going to do.

It was their strange little routine.

A moment later the dog came running back proudly, carrying something in his mouth.

A bright rubber toy.

Rex dropped it in front of Kael like he had just delivered the greatest treasure in the world.

Kael stared at it.

Then he sighed.

"That's not food, Rex."

The dog tilted his head.

Kael couldn't help but laugh.

"You're trying your best, huh?"

He picked up the toy and tossed it lightly into the empty alley nearby.

Rex sprinted after it instantly, claws scraping against the pavement.

For a moment, Kael forgot about the cold.

Forgot about the hunger.

Forgot about the fact that the world had no place for someone like him.

Because Rex had chosen him.

And somehow… that made everything a little easier.

The sky was already darkening when they left the street.

Cars moved through the roads in long streams of white and red lights as evening settled over the city.

Kael stepped onto the crosswalk with Rex walking beside him.

Halfway across the street, Rex suddenly stopped.

A low growl rumbled deep in his chest.

Kael frowned.

"What is it?"

Rex's ears were stiff.

His eyes were locked on something in the distance.

Then the birds began screaming.

Hundreds of them burst from the trees at once, shrieking wildly as they filled the sky.

Dogs started barking in nearby streets.

Cats scattered across rooftops.

The air suddenly felt… wrong.

Heavy.

Like the world itself had stopped breathing.

Kael slowly turned his head.

And saw the headlights.

A car speeding toward him.

Too close.

Too fast.

There was no time to move.

The impact came like thunder.

Pain exploded through Kael's body as the world spun violently around him.

He heard Rex barking—no, screaming.

The ground rushed toward him.

Then everything went silent.

And the fog appeared.

It poured through the streets like a living thing.

Thick.

White.

Unnatural.

Within seconds the entire town was swallowed.

Birds shrieked in panic.

Dogs howled into the darkness.

Far away, trees bent and twisted even though there was no wind.

Kael lay motionless on the cold asphalt.

Blood slowly spread beneath him.

Rex stood over his body, barking desperately, refusing to leave his side.

But the fog kept growing.

The animals kept screaming.

Because something ancient had awakened.

Something that had slept beneath the earth for centuries.

And somehow…

It had chosen him.

The hospital room smelled like disinfectant and rain.

Machines beeped quietly in the darkness.

Kael's eyelids twitched.

Slowly, painfully, he opened his eyes.

The ceiling above him was bright white.

His body felt heavy, wrapped in bandages.

Pain pulsed through his chest every time he breathed.

He tried to move but quickly stopped.

Then he heard a soft sound.

A small thump.

Kael turned his head.

At the foot of the hospital bed sat Rex.

The dog's tail began wagging wildly the moment their eyes met.

In his mouth was another toy.

A small stuffed animal.

Rex trotted forward happily and dropped it onto the blanket beside Kael.

Kael stared at it weakly.

"You're still doing that…?"

Rex wagged his tail harder.

Kael smiled faintly.

But suddenly something strange happened.

Outside the hospital window, the wind moved through the trees.

Leaves rustled softly in the night.

And Kael felt it.

Not heard.

Not seen.

Felt.

A whisper moving through the branches.

Soft.

Ancient.

Alive.

Kael's smile slowly disappeared.

Because somehow…

He understood it.

And far beyond the city, deep inside the silent forest…

Something had begun to wake.

And it was calling his name.
