Chapter 7 - A Walk Through the Night Market

The night market near Jade Street was alive with lights, laughter, and the smell of sizzling street food. Lanterns swayed gently in the evening breeze, casting a warm glow over the crowded stalls. Lian Hua had come to pick up a few rare ingredients for her shop's new flower arrangements, enjoying the rare escape from her small, fragrant world.

She barely noticed him at first.

"Lian Hua."

She froze. There he was—Zhen Wei, standing just behind a stall, impeccably dressed even among the chaos. His dark eyes scanned the crowd, and when they met hers, there was that familiar intensity, a mixture of admiration and something sharper, almost possessive.

"I didn't expect to see you here," she said cautiously, adjusting the basket of ingredients in her hand.

"Didn't expect… or didn't want to?" he replied, stepping closer, though careful not to crowd her. The way he said it made her stomach twist.

She laughed softly, though nervously. "I… I guess I didn't expect either. It's just a walk, after all."

His gaze flicked to a young man passing by, smiling at her as he handed her a small package. Zhen Wei's jaw tightened ever so slightly, his fingers curling unconsciously at his sides. Lian Hua noticed, a small flicker of unease and fascination stirring in her chest.

"You…" he said softly, almost under his breath, "you belong in calmer spaces than this."

"I like the market," she said, meeting his gaze cautiously. "It's… lively."

He stepped closer, close enough that she could feel the faint heat of him. "Yes," he murmured, his voice low, "but I prefer the calm… when it's you I'm with."

Her cheeks flushed, and she looked away, suddenly very aware of the tension between them. The crowd moved around them, yet in that moment, it felt as if the world had narrowed to just the two of them.

For a moment, silence stretched, broken only by the faint laughter and music of the market. Then, with a subtle bow of his head, he said, "Walk with me."

Lian Hua hesitated, but something in his presence—strong, protective, yet insistent—made her nod. They moved through the stalls side by side, the evening air thick with the scent of food, flowers, and… him.

And as they walked, she realized something that both thrilled and frightened her: he notices everything. Every glance, every movement. And somehow… I don't want him to stop.
