Ashes of the Silent War

Chapter 16 – Leviathan Rising

Sephira burned like a dying star.

Smoke choked the air. Fires raged through collapsed buildings. The streets had become a battlefield of shattered stone and molten steel, littered with the bodies of fallen soldiers and civilians who had nowhere to run.

In the heart of the chaos, Kael Varden stood, limping through rubble, bloodied but unbroken. His eyes were locked on the massive form of the new Leviathan, which towered above the coastal streets like a moving fortress of black steel and glowing red energy.

Its claws tore through buildings, energy pulses shot from its shoulders, and the ground shook with every step. The creature's roar reverberated across the city like a tidal wave.

Kael tightened his grip on his rifle, then slashed with his combat knife. "You want death? Come get it."

From above, Noctis' voice boomed across the battlefield.

"Kael… your resistance is admirable. But futile. My Leviathan will crush Sephira. You cannot fight what I have made."

Lightning erupted from the sky, targeting Kael and his allies, forcing them to dive for cover. The streets became a labyrinth of fire, smoke, and energy arcs.

Kael darted between ruined buildings, firing at the Leviathan's joints. Explosions shook the ground as debris from the coastal towers fell around him. He dodged an energy strike, rolling under a collapsing beam, and slashed at the exposed knee joint of the massive machine. Sparks flew, but the Leviathan did not falter.

Meanwhile, Marcus Hale appeared on the opposite street, his armor gleaming with stolen Dominion tech.

"Kael!" he shouted, firing a high-powered energy cannon into the midst of the allied forces. Soldiers fell, barricades shattered, and chaos spread.

Lyra's eyes widened. "Hale! Again?! You're insane!"

Kael shouted through the dust. "Lyra—cover the civilians! I'll deal with him!"

Lyra made a snap decision. She fired, detonating a nearby fuel cache to block Hale's path. The explosion sent him sprawling, but he survived, glaring with pure rage. His betrayal had cost hundreds of lives, and Kael knew Hale wasn't finished yet.

Kael faced the Leviathan again, dodging a massive claw strike that demolished a nearby building. He rolled forward, planting explosive charges on the creature's legs. The Leviathan screamed, metal tearing, but Kael was thrown back by the energy blast Noctis sent through the air.

Lyra saw him flying across the street and didn't hesitate. She sprinted through the ruins, dodging collapsing walls and energy pulses, and tackled Kael to safety just as the Leviathan's claw slammed where he had been seconds before.

"Kael! You can't take this thing alone!" Lyra shouted, dragging him behind cover.

Kael gritted his teeth. "Then we take it together."

Together, they coordinated with the fractured allied forces. Snipers took high positions. Mercenaries and soldiers fired on exposed joints. Improvised explosives were launched into the Leviathan's midsection. Energy arcs lit the night sky with every strike.

The Leviathan roared, stumbling under the onslaught. It tried to rise, but Kael, Lyra, and the surviving soldiers pushed harder.

Then, Hale reappeared, firing indiscriminately at the allies. One massive blast killed a group of soldiers instantly. Kael's eyes blazed with fury.

"You're done, Hale!" he shouted, charging, knife in hand. Hale dodged, firing his cannon, and the explosion sent Kael rolling. But the distraction allowed Lyra to fire a concentrated missile at the Leviathan's core.

The black metal creature shuddered. Sparks flew. Red energy flickered across its body. It roared in pain as the explosive hit its core, destabilizing the Leviathan's energy systems.

Noctis screamed in rage from above. "You… you dare!"

The Leviathan staggered, smoke pouring from its joints. The city trembled with the power of the strike. For the first time, it seemed Kael's side had a chance.

But the victory came at a terrible cost. Several blocks of the city had collapsed during the assault. Scores of civilians and soldiers were buried beneath the rubble. Lyra, Kael, and the surviving forces had saved Sephira, but the battlefield was littered with devastation.

Kael stood over the smoking Leviathan's crippled leg, bloodied, exhausted, and barely able to stand. Lyra put a hand on his shoulder.

"We did it… but at what cost?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Kael looked across the city—bodies, rubble, and fire as far as the eye could see. He clenched his fists. "Noctis isn't finished. He's alive… and he's planning the next move. But this… this proves we can fight him. Together."

From the shadows, Hale disappeared, muttering, "This isn't over, Kael. Not yet."

Kael's eyes hardened. "It ends… when I say it ends."

Sephira had survived the Leviathan. The first decisive blow against Noctis' forces had been struck. But the battle had only just begun—and the final showdown loomed closer than ever.

The war had reached a new, apocalyptic scale. And the continent itself seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the storm to come.
