Ashes of the Silent War
Chapter 9 – The Fall of Eidolon
The city of Eidolon burned like a tomb.
Streets crumbled beneath tanks. Buildings collapsed under artillery fire. Explosions echoed through every alleyway. Civilians screamed as they ran for cover while Dominion forces and Obsidian Veil assassins tore through the defenses.
Kael Varden stood in the heart of the ruined command center, blood dripping from his arm, his body battered and bruised.
Across from him, the Leviathan Atlas roared, raising his massive arm to strike again.
Kael dodged and rolled, but the impact of Atlas's punch slammed him into a wall. The bricks crumbled, and his leg twisted unnaturally beneath him. Pain shot through his body like lightning.
"Damn it…" Kael muttered, trying to stand.
Atlas advanced, crushing debris under each step. Kael gritted his teeth, pulling his combat knife. He lunged at Atlas, slashing at exposed joints in the armor. Sparks flew. Metal screamed.
For a moment, Kael found an opening. With one precise strike, he ripped open a critical joint in Atlas's chest plate. Hydraulic fluid sprayed. The giant staggered and fell with a deafening crash.
Kael barely had time to breathe. Pain radiated from his shattered leg. He was limping heavily, blood running down his thigh.
"Kael!" Lyra shouted from the doorway.
Two more figures emerged behind her. Soldiers, desperate to hold the city together. But Kael's eyes were on the command center entrance.
"Not yet," he gasped.
Marcus Hale stepped from the shadows, smirking.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"You," he growled.
Hale raised a hand casually. "Oh, Kael… you really should have finished us off before coming here."
Lyra froze. "Marcus… what are you—"
Hale laughed. "I've already done what I came to do. Eidolon isn't just going to fall to Dominion or the Obsidian Veil. No…" He paused, savoring the moment. "It's going to fall because you never had a chance."
Kael took a step forward, limping. "What are you talking about?"
Hale activated a tablet. A holographic map of Eidolon appeared, glowing in red.
"Every barricade, every defensive turret, every evacuation point… I've been controlling it. From the inside. Your precious Crimson Legion is helpless."
Lyra's face paled. "You… you sabotaged the defenses? All this time?!"
Hale nodded slowly. "And that's not all." He tapped the screen. "Phase Omega doesn't just involve the Leviathans. There's a contingency… for civilians."
Kael's blood ran cold. "You… what have you done?"
Hale smirked. "By dawn, the city will be ready for the experiment. Thousands of innocents will be processed into the next generation of Leviathans. And there's nothing you can do to stop it."
Lyra's hand trembled over her pistol. "No… we can't let that happen."
Kael glared at Hale. "We fight. No matter what."
Outside the walls, Valkyr advanced through the chaos. Civilians fled, but tanks and Dominion infantry crushed everything in their path. The city's defense was collapsing faster than anyone could react.
Kael limped toward the battlefield entrance. Lyra followed, firing at Dominion soldiers to cover him.
Suddenly, from the upper floors of a collapsed building, an explosion erupted. One of Lyra's closest soldiers—Commander Jaren—was caught in the blast.
Kael screamed, rushing to pull him free. Flames consumed the rubble around them.
"Kael… stop… go… save the others," Jaren gasped, blood streaming down his face.
"No!" Kael shouted.
Jaren shook his head. "It's too late for me… but the city… the people… they need you."
With tears in his eyes, Kael grabbed Jaren as the building began to collapse further. He flung Jaren away, saving him from the immediate debris—but not from the secondary explosions.
A massive beam fell. Jaren was pinned beneath it. His screams echoed.
Lyra grabbed Kael's arm. "We have to move! NOW!"
Kael turned back, staring at the trapped soldier. The man who had fought alongside them since the beginning… who had been like a brother… was gone.
"Jaren…" Kael whispered. His fists clenched. "I swear… this ends tonight."
The streets of Eidolon became a nightmare.
The Obsidian Veil assassins struck from rooftops, killing anyone who resisted. Dominion tanks fired indiscriminately. Civilians screamed in the streets.
Kael and Lyra moved through the chaos, trying to reach the Phase Omega facility beneath the city. Every corner, every alley was a trap.
Kael's leg throbbed with pain, but he forced himself onward. Atlas had fallen, but Valkyr still moved like a predator. The Leviathan blocked the streets ahead.
Lyra paused for a moment, staring at Kael. Her voice was tight with fear.
"Kael… the only way we might save some of the civilians…" she whispered. "We might have to—sacrifice part of the city."
Kael turned toward her. "What do you mean?"
Lyra swallowed. "We can collapse the lower tunnels… seal off the facility… destroy the experiment before it reaches Phase Omega. But if we do that… some civilians won't make it."
Kael's jaw tightened. His hands trembled over his knife and rifle. "And if we don't?"
Lyra's eyes met his. "Then the entire city… becomes the Leviathan army."
Kael's heart pounded. He closed his eyes briefly, thinking of Jaren, of the 200,000 lives depending on him.
Finally, he nodded. "Do it."
Lyra activated the explosives in her pack. The tunnels beneath Eidolon hummed with a growing energy.
Kael turned toward Valkyr, readying himself for the battle.
The final phase of Eidolon's destruction had begun.
The war had become darker than ever, and the cost was only beginning to reveal itself.
