Chapter 11 - Chapter 10: The Sheep and the Wolf

The morning bell of Silverwood Academy rang with a melodic chime, a stark contrast to the blaring sirens of the Whitmore facility.

Kael sat up in his bed. He hadn't slept. He had spent the night in a meditative trance, absorbing the rich ambient mana of the dormitory. It was a slow process—painfully slow compared to the rush of Devouring a living being—but it was necessary.

SYSTEM STATUS

HOST: KAELYN HAYES

LEVEL: 17 (F-RANK)

MANA: 450/450 (CAPACITY INCREASED)

PROGRESS TO LEVEL 18: 12%

He felt... saturated. The constant hunger that had gnawed at him for days was quieted, replaced by a thrumming sense of power. But he knew it was an illusion. The power he had—Lightning, Telekinesis, Strength—was stolen. It wasn't grown.

He needed to cultivate. He needed to make this power his own.

He dressed in the new uniform. The fabric was smooth, expensive. It felt wrong on his scarred skin. He looked in the small mirror above the desk. The boy staring back looked like a student. But the eyes... the eyes were ancient, filled with a cold, calculating darkness.

Time to act.

He grabbed his bag and headed out.

The hallways of the academic building were a river of noise and color. Students laughed, flirted, and argued about the latest dungeon raids. Kael moved through them like a ghost, his presence barely registering. He liked it that way. Being noticed was dangerous.

He found his homeroom: Class 1-B. As he stepped inside, he scanned the room.

SYSTEM SCAN:

AREATARGETS DETECTED: 32 STUDENTS

RANKS: E-RANK (MAJORITY), D-RANK (MINORITY)

THREAT LEVEL: LOW TO MODERATE.

He spotted Lyra immediately. She was sitting in the middle row, saving a seat for him. She waved enthusiastically, her face lighting up.

Next to her, unfortunately, sat Julius.

The blonde boy was leaning back in his chair, feet on the desk, surrounded by his cronies. He spotted Kael the moment he entered.

"Look who it is," Julius announced, his voice carrying over the murmurs of the class. "The charity case. Nice jacket, by the way. Did you get the burn out?"

Kael ignored him. He walked straight to the empty seat next to Lyra.

"Don't sit there," Julius said, his voice dropping an octave. "That seat is for people who actually belong here."

Lyra stood up, slamming her hands on the desk. "Shut up, Julius! He's sponsored by Instructor Rowan. He has every right to be here!"

Julius smirked, looking past Lyra to Kael. "Let him fight his own battles, Lockwood. Unless he's your pet?"

Kael stopped. He looked at Julius.

Level 35. D-Rank. Fire Affinity.

The gap was massive. In a straight fight, Julius would burn him to a crisp. Kael's F-rank stats couldn't compete with D-rank mana reserves and constitution.

But Kael wasn't a brawler. He was a predator.

He smiled. It was a polite, empty smile.

"I'm just here to learn, Julius," Kael said calmly, pulling out the chair. "I'm not looking for trouble."

Julius narrowed his eyes, sensing the lack of fear but attributing it to stupidity. "Watch your back, stray."

Kael sat down. Lyra looked at him with concern.

"You shouldn't let him walk all over you," she whispered.

"I have thick skin," Kael replied, his voice low. "And I pick my battles."

Just then, the teacher walked in. He was a stern man with a graying beard—Professor Aldric.

"Settle down," Aldric barked. "Today we begin with Mana Theory. Open your textbooks to page 14."

The class droned on. Kael followed along, but his mind was elsewhere. He watched Lyra take notes. She was diligent, her handwriting neat. She tapped her pen on the paper when she was thinking. She bit her lip when she was confused.

She is soft, Kael thought. She trusts easily.

"Lyra," he whispered.

She looked up. "Hmm?"

"I don't understand this part," he said, pointing to a diagram of a mana circuit. It was a lie; he understood it perfectly from the system's database, but he needed her to feel needed. "The circulation loop... why does it bypass the heart?"

Lyra's eyes lit up. The desire to explain, to help, washed over her face. "Oh, that's easy! The heart creates blood, which carries oxygen. But mana is carried by the soul and the nervous system. If you push mana through the heart directly, it can cause cardiac arrest. The loop bypasses it to protect the organ while cycling energy."

She drew a quick sketch on a piece of scrap paper. "See? It's like a bypass valve."

Kael looked at the drawing, then at her. He let admiration seep into his expression.

"That makes sense," he said. "You're really smart, Lyra."

She blushed, looking down at her notebook. "It's just basics..."

"Not to me," Kael said. "I never had formal training. You're the first person who's actually explained it in a way that makes sense."

He saw the hook set. She wanted to be valued. She wanted to be seen as more than just Silas's daughter. Kael was giving her that validation.

"I can tutor you," Lyra offered quickly. "If you want? I mean, we have free period after lunch. We could go to the library?"

Kael hesitated, feigning uncertainty. "You'd do that? I don't want to waste your time."

"It's not a waste!" she insisted. "Helping you study helps me review, too. Please?"

"Okay," Kael nodded. "Thank you, Lyra."

Step two complete.

Lunch Break.

The cafeteria was a sprawling hall with floor-to-ceiling windows. Kael sat across from Lyra, picking at the food. It was high-quality beast meat, rich in nutrients.

"So," Lyra said, stabbing a piece of steak. "Family Day is coming up. In two weeks."

Kael stiffened. "I heard."

"My mom is supposed to come," Lyra said, her voice dropping. "But she's cancelled the last three times. Dad usually comes instead."

Kael leaned forward, his expression shifting to one of gentle concern. "That must be hard. Having a parent who is... distant."

Lyra sighed. "She says it's for work. Important research. I try to understand, but..." She looked at Kael. "Do you ever feel like... like you're not enough? Like if you were just a better daughter, she'd want to spend time with you?"

Kael felt a phantom pain in his chest. He thought of Elena. The mother who ran away. The mother who died.

"No," Kael said, his voice hard. "I don't think it's about you, Lyra. Some people... they're just obsessed with their own world. They don't see what's right in front of them."

Lyra looked at him with wide, sad eyes. "You really think so?"

"I know so," Kael said. "You're smart. You're kind. You're talented. If your mother can't see that, then she's the one missing out."

Lyra reached across the table and squeezed his hand.

"You're a good listener, Kael."

He let her hold his hand. Her skin was warm.

"I try," he said.

Inside, he was calculating.

Silas is neglecting her. Good. The resentment is already there. I just need to stoke it. I need to make her feel like I am the only one who truly understands her.

"Maybe..." Lyra started, then stopped.

"What?"

"Maybe you could meet her?" Lyra asked nervously. "On Family Day? If she comes... I could introduce you. She knows a lot about awakening phenomena. Maybe she could help you figure out your... situation."

Bingo.

Kael looked down, pretending to be nervous. "I don't know, Lyra. She's a big shot researcher. Would she even want to meet a stray like me?"

"She'll want to meet my friend," Lyra said firmly. "And if she doesn't... well, then I'll just hang out with you instead."

Kael smiled. "I'd like that."

Later that night.

Kael stood on the balcony of his dorm room. The moon was full, casting a silver glow over the academy grounds.

He was strong. Stronger than any normal F-rank had a right to be. But it wasn't enough.

He looked toward the distant lights of the dormitory where the C-rank students—and Julius—stayed.

He needed to hunt.

The academy had a "Training Forest" on the eastern edge of the campus. It was stocked with beasts for the students to practice on. But the powerful beasts were deep in the forest, restricted to upperclassmen.

Kael needed to get stronger. He needed to level up. If he was going to kill Silas, a B-rank, he needed to be at least C-rank. Maybe B.

The gap between F and B was a canyon.

"System," Kael whispered. "How much XP to reach Level 40?"

CURRENT LEVEL: 17

XP TO LEVEL 40: 45,000

CURRENT XP RATE: LOW (MEDITATION)

SUGGESTION: HUNTING OR CONSUMPTION.

He looked at the forest. The darkness there was absolute.

He climbed over the railing and dropped silently to the grass below.

Kael moved into the shadows of the trees, his eyes shifting to the darkness-adapted vision of a predator.

The Whitmores thought he was a broken tool. Lyra thought he was a broken boy.

They were both wrong.

He was the wolf. And he was circling the herd.
