Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: THE MOMENT OF FISSION

ELARA'S POV

The sound of the pipes was like a knife to my head. It was so loud and painful. The red light from the vents above was flashing in time with my heartbeat, which was racing like crazy. Vane was serious about blowing up the whole docking area, and there were still people running around who were too close to the danger zone. The air was thick with tension as we knew we had to move fast or get caught in the blast. Every second counted, and the flashing red light was like a clock ticking away, reminding us that time was running out for everyone in the bay. It was a terrifying feeling, knowing we had to act fast to save ourselves and the others.

The red glow seemed to be getting brighter and more intense, like a warning sign that the explosion was looming over us.

"Kaelen, we're almost out of time, the lift is going to leave without us!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, trying to be heard over the ear-piercing shriek of the steam escaping from the pressure valves. The sound was like nothing I'd ever heard before. It was as if the very pipes themselves were screaming in agony. "If those conduits blow now, the explosion will rip through the lift cables like they're made of paper, sending them crashing down into the darkness below. It'll be a catastrophe, and anyone still on the lift will be doomed.

We have to get out of here, now, or we'll be trapped forever!"

As I gazed up at the staircase that led to the upper Spire, I knew I was looking at our only hope, the path to the Kill Switch that could save the planet. For a brief moment, it was unguarded, a golden spiral that seemed to promise salvation. But then my eyes fell on the woman who had begged me for help earlier, her legs shaking with exhaustion as she made her way to the lift, her golden Grid-mark flickering weakly, like a candle on the verge of being extinguished by a storm. I was torn. If we left now, she would surely die, but if we stayed to try and stabilize the room, Vane would lock the upper sanctum, and the planet would continue to suffer, bleeding out until nothing was left but dust and echoes.

"We need to split up," I said, a sudden chill of understanding settling into my bones.

"Only one of us can move forward. The other has to stay behind and use the violet frequency to calm down the explosion before it shreds this level."

Kaelen's voice was barely above a whisper, but it sent shivers down my spine as he grasped my hand tightly, his fingers wrapping around mine like a vice. His eyes, filled with a desperate urgency, locked onto mine. "There's no way we can do that," he said. "The bond we share is what makes this whole thing work, Elara. If we sever the connection now, the interference will stop, but it will come at a great cost. We'll both lose our powers, and we can't afford that, not when we're so close."

As I looked at him, tears began to fill my eyes. "If we don't take a stand, we're just as bad as the Council," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "We can't build a better future by hurting those we're supposed to care about. You have to go, Kaelen. You have to save the world. And I'll do my part, I'll save the people, no matter what it takes."

As the pipe exploded, a huge wave of scorching hot gas shot out, melting the metal floor right in front of us, creating a spray of white-hot liquid. I didn't wait for orders. I just acted. I grabbed my emergency EMP disk from my bag and pushed it into Kaelen's special glove, which completely overpowered his shield. By doing this, I was basically giving him all my power, making sure our connection stayed strong through the suit's capacitors, even if it meant I'd be left with no protection at all in the middle of a burning hot environment.

KAELEN'S POV

"Elara, stop!" I shouted loudly, but unfortunately, it was already too late. The transfer process had started and there was no going back now.

As she channeled her energy into me, I felt an intense surge of power, like a sudden rush of electricity through my veins. It was as if my body was filled with a vibrant, shimmering liquid that pulsed with an otherworldly life. The connection between us remained, but it transformed into a thin, glowing thread that seemed to vibrate with an incredible force. With this energy coursing through me, she propelled me forward towards the stairs. I felt like a human conduit for raw power. But this transformation came at a terrible cost. She was now left standing alone, a young girl in a scavenger's jacket, surrounded by the ruins of a room on the brink of collapse.

"Run now!" she yelled, her voice barely audible over the ear-piercing sound of crunching metal. "I've got the manual controls, I'll try to clear a path by pushing the debris away from the elevator," she shouted, her tiny figure outlined against the backdrop of hissing steam. "Just keep climbing and get to the top as quickly as possible, don't dare look back, just focus on getting out of here!"

I froze, my heart skipping a beat, as I witnessed her dashing towards the control panel with a sense of desperation, her fingers moving swiftly across the interface like a seasoned mechanic. At the same time, the Enforcers were getting back on their feet, their glowing red eyes locked onto her small, defenseless frame. To them, she was just a target, but to me, she was the reason I was still alive.

"I'll be back for you," I said, but my words felt empty as I stared at the destruction and the flames that were rapidly spreading, creating a barrier between us.

As I turned and sprinted up the stairs, the emergency lights made them shine like they were made of gold. But with every step I took away from her, the purple light on my armor started to flicker and get weaker. It felt like the distance between us was actually pulling us apart. The air got harder to breathe as I climbed higher, and the strong, yellowish glow of the upper part of the building seemed to be crushing the purple light. Then, I heard Vane's voice again, but it wasn't coming from the speakers, it was more like a voice inside my head, a heavy, sticky feeling that was pushing down on my mind.

"You're letting go of what's real for something that's just going to fade away.

That's a decision made with your heart, not your head. The Spire is forever. But you, you're just a small spark that's lost its direction, a light that's burned out in the darkness."

As I reached the top landing, I was out of breath and my lungs were on fire. The Grand Hall was right in front of me, a massive room made entirely of glass that overlooked the city of Oura, which was struggling to stay alive amidst a sea of flickering blackouts. And then I saw him, Vane, standing in the middle of the room, his face uncovered and looking like he owned the place. But what really caught my attention were his eyes, which had turned a deep, glowing gold, a color that seemed to vibrate with the power of the entire Grid. It was clear that he had completely become one with the system.

Below me, a muffled explosion rocked the tower, shaking the glass floor beneath my boots. I felt a sharp, agonizing pull in my chest. The bond screaming in protest. Elara.
