Chapter 14 - Flames Under Moonlight

The clearing smelled of pine and damp earth, moonlight spilling over frost-kissed grass. Lia's chest rose and fell rapidly, her wings twitching faintly behind her, golden sparks dancing at the edges as if reflecting her pulse.

Kael stood close, shoulders brushing hers, the warmth of him impossible to ignore. He didn't have to say anything for her heart to leap every glance, every subtle movement radiated intensity.

"You're taking your time," he said, voice low, teasing, edged with that dangerous calm that made her shiver. He handed her a short staff, guiding her hands into position. "Don't let me see hesitation."

Lia swallowed, gripping the weapon. "I'm… focused," she said, though her pulse betrayed her nerves.

Kael smirked, eyes glinting. "Good. Keep it that way." His shoulder nudged hers lightly, and a shiver ran through her. It was impossible to look away.

Ayara circled them, golden fur gleaming, eyes sharp like a hawk's. "Balance," she barked, voice firm. "Your feet, your center of gravity, your energy they all move together. If you falter, you'll fall. If you hesitate, someone else won't."

Lia mirrored Ayara's movements as best she could, staff spinning, striking, blocking. Every block reminded her of the Gamma's steady, judging gaze. Ayara was strict, unyielding, but Lia could feel the respect under the sharp edges.

Kael stepped closer, brushing his fingers along her wrist to correct her grip. "Your magic is solid. Your reflexes are sharper than I expected," he murmured. His lips hovered near her ear, voice low and teasing. "Not that I'll let you slack off for long."

Lia's pulse raced. The bond between them pulsed like a heartbeat she could feel in her chest and her wings. She could sense his attention in every fiber of her being the way he watched, guided, and sometimes tested her.

Ayara shifted positions and motioned for Lia to advance. "Forward. Predict the strike, then intercept. You're not just defending yourself you're controlling the flow of battle. React too slowly, and it's over."

Lia lunged, striking with precision, feeling the energy of her magic and Kael's presence entwining. He moved beside her, correcting her stance, offering subtle guidance through touch and whispered instruction.

"You're better than I expected," he said softly, lips brushing the edge of her hair. "Faster, sharper… and watching you grow like this…" He didn't finish the thought, but she understood. Every movement, every heartbeat, every twitch of her wings seemed to stir something dark and intense inside him.

Hours passed in motion blocks, strikes, pivots, spins, falls, corrections. Ayara's voice softened, laughter breaking through the strict tones. "Not bad," she admitted, swiping a strand of hair from Lia's face. "You might survive the Court yet."

Lia grinned, panting, feeling the sting of sweat and magic energy buzzing through her veins. Kael's shoulder pressed against hers occasionally, guiding, steadying, teasing, and in those small touches she felt the intensity of his obsession not just as a claim, but as a tether, a promise, a fire she didn't want to escape.

Finally, the pack gathered around them, observing the session. Soren, calm and composed as always, nodded. Rowan whispered to a younger wolf, "She's really keeping up. Even with Kael breathing down her neck."

Lia laughed, leaning against Kael. "He's… relentless," she whispered.

Kael smirked, thumb brushing her cheek. "I've had eight lifetimes to prepare for this," he murmured. "You're better than I expected and that only makes things interesting."

Ayara stepped closer, her eyes softened just a fraction. "You've improved. Not just in skill, but in confidence. That bond… it's real. And you're becoming a part of the pack, not just the Alpha's mate."

Lia's heart warmed. "Thank you. I… I feel like I belong here."

Kael's lips brushed her temple, slow and deliberate. "And you will," he murmured. "Every step, every breath, every fight we face them together. I won't let anything take you from here."

Even the moon seemed to linger, silver light pooling over them. Lia took a deep breath, feeling her magic hum in tandem with Kael's heartbeat. For the first time, she understood what it truly meant to be part of this pack and part of this bond. Fierce, protective, obsessive, but alive with promise and danger.

The Court would return. The war would come. But tonight, they had trained, laughed, fought, and connected. And the bond between them intense, dark, and consuming had grown stronger than ever.
