Chapter 2 - shadow of jealousy

The morning sun spilled gold across the campus, painting the walkways in a warm, welcoming light. Lucinda Leo's heart felt like it had wings as she navigated the corridors of her school. Yesterday's unexpected encounter with Adrian—his deep, calm eyes lingering on her just a moment too long—still danced in her thoughts. There was something about him, something that made the air around her feel charged.

Yet, not everything was as radiant as the sunlight. As Lucinda rounded the corner to the cafeteria, she felt the sharp sting of eyes burning into her back.

"Well, well… if it isn't Lucinda Leo, gracing us with her presence again."

Lucinda froze. The voice was dripping with malice. Slowly, she turned and saw Sabrina Montrose, a girl with icy blonde hair and a reputation for being fiercely competitive—and notoriously jealous.

Sabrina's blue eyes sparkled with something that Lucinda didn't like: envy. "You've been spending a lot of time around Adrian lately," Sabrina continued, her tone syrupy but poisonous. "I guess some people just have all the luck, huh?"

Lucinda's stomach twisted. She had sensed that someone might not be happy about her growing closeness with Adrian, but the confrontation was more direct than she expected.

"I… I don't know what you mean," Lucinda said cautiously, trying not to let fear or irritation show.

"Oh, don't play innocent with me," Sabrina snapped. "Adrian's mine. Everyone knows it. So maybe you should… step back before you get hurt."

Lucinda's pulse raced. She wanted to defend herself, to tell Sabrina that her feelings for Adrian were her own, but something in the way Sabrina was poised—a subtle, threatening grace—made her hesitate.

Before the tension could escalate further, a familiar voice interrupted:

"Is there a problem here?"

Adrian had appeared beside Lucinda, his presence suddenly commanding the space. Sabrina's confident smirk faltered for the first time as she looked at him.

"Nothing at all," Sabrina said smoothly, though there was a slight tremor in her voice. She turned on her heel, leaving Lucinda and Adrian alone.

Lucinda let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. "Thank you… for… stepping in," she stammered, feeling a mix of relief and embarrassment.

Adrian smiled, but it wasn't the playful smile she remembered from yesterday. It was something more serious, more protective. "You don't have to face her alone, Lucinda. Not ever."

Her cheeks warmed, and for a moment, the world seemed to shrink to just the two of them. But deep down, Lucinda knew that Sabrina's shadow wasn't going to disappear so easily.

Later that afternoon, as Lucinda sat in the school library, trying to focus on her homework, a quiet chill ran down her spine. She glanced up and saw Sabrina across the room, her eyes fixed on her like a hawk.

This wasn't just jealousy. It was a warning.

Lucinda clenched her fists under the table. She had no intention of backing down. If this was the challenge the universe had sent her way, she would face it. And somewhere, deep in her chest, a quiet thrill surged. Life was getting complicated… but maybe, just maybe, it was worth the risk.
