Chapter 118 - Chapter 118: The Blood Magic Legacy of High Sothos (Part 1)

Basilisk Isles, Tear Island, High Sothos Ruins

As the last embers of sunset bathed the High Sothos ruins, the ancient city seemed to don a veil of crimson shadow. The golden radiance, once warm and soft, shifted into a deep, bruising red, casting an unsettling atmosphere over the fractured skyline.

It was a scene of haunting beauty and profound danger. The beauty lay in the palpable weight of time—the stones almost whispering of the city's lost glory as the "Tenth Daughter of Valyria." The danger, however, was etched into every crack of the moss-covered walls. Every shadow hidden in the rubble held the potential for a nightmare, whether born of the city's twisted past or its predatory present.

The Red Tide

Howl... Howl...

A swarm of blood-red figures emerged from the jungle fringe, encircling the ruins. These were Mo Sha Hounds—lean, flame-furred predators built for speed and relentless pursuit. Jon had expended every drop of energy in his Magestones to summon over a thousand of them, banking on sheer numbers to overwhelm the city's guardians.

AWOOO—!

The swarm grew silent as three gargantuan figures stepped forward. The Three-headed Hellhounds—the evolved form of the Mo Sha Hounds—loomed as large as bulls. Each of their nine heads hissed with suppressed heat. Jon followed closely behind them, the red-furred tide parting for him in a display of absolute submission.

"Go," Jon commanded.

The hounds vanished into the ruins like a streak of red lightning. Jon and the Three-headed Hellhounds moved as the heavy vanguard, leaving the scouting and fodder-clearing to the lesser swarm. As the moonlight finally conquered the sky, the red tide flooded the city of the damned.

The Minotaur's Last Stand

MOO... HISS...

The ruins reacted to the intrusion like a disturbed prehistoric beast. As Jon stepped through the shattered main gate, he encountered a monstrosity that dwarfed the Lizard-Men.

It was a bipedal giant with the head of a bull and a body as thick and hunched as a grizzly bear. It stood nearly as tall as a Cyclops, its muscled hide scarred from centuries of territorial conflict. Seeing Jon and his hellhounds, the beast roared, lowering its horns for a thunderous charge that made the very earth beneath the ruins tremble.

SNARL—!

Before Jon could even draw a blade, the Three-headed Hellhounds pounced. They moved with the terrifying coordination of a lion pride. Two clamped their multiple jaws onto the giant's thick neck, while the third tore into its flank and hindquarters.

The hellhounds' fangs glowed with a searing, thermal energy, cauterizing and burning the flesh even as they tore it. The giant, initially a force of unstoppable momentum, was suddenly pinned, a dozen snarling heads shredding its vitality.

For ten minutes, the Minotaur thrashed, slamming itself against stone walls in a desperate attempt to dislodge the "red leeches" clinging to its back. But the hellhounds' manes had hardened into scale-like armor, absorbing the impacts while their jaws only tightened.

Finally, the giant collapsed into the rubble, gasping and broken.

Moo...

The beast let out a weak, pathetic lowing, looking like a helpless calf. It feigned total defeat, waiting for Jon to approach for a final, suicidal lunge.

Jon didn't blink. He sensed the concentrated malice and the hidden reserve of strength. Instead of approaching, he simply gestured. A flash of black light—a precision strike—pierced the monster's skull between the eyes. The giant went limp, its consciousness extinguished instantly.

"Clear the carcass," Jon ordered the Mo Sha Hounds. "The heavy threats are gone."

The Subterranean Vaults

Following the internal compass of his magical perception, Jon reached the center of the ruins: the ancient Great Arena.

The architecture here was a fusion of styles. While the surface was Ghiscari—featuring the pyramids and slave pits common in Slaver's Bay—Jon soon discovered the city's true heart. Beneath the crumbling sandstone and mud-bricks lay a foundation of indestructible Valyrian Black Stone.

As he descended into the first level of the subterranean sewers, the air changed. It was cooler, smelling of ozone and ancient sorcery. The Black Stone walls were seamless, untouched by the centuries of decay that had ravaged the surface.

Jon sent the Mo Sha Hounds ahead to map the depths. Through their eyes, he identified a five-level structure:

Level 1: Slave holding pens.

Level 2: The "Breaking" grounds (Training).

Level 3: Logistics and storage vaults.

Level 4: The High-Security Prisons.

Level 5: The Blood Laboratories.

Jon ignored the upper levels. His focus was entirely on the fifth floor. He stepped into the Black Stone corridor, the rhythmic clicking of his boots echoing against the obsidian-like walls. High Sothos had been abandoned for hundreds of years, yet in the dark, the legacy of the Blood Mages felt as if it were still pulse-beating beneath his feet.
