Chapter 115 - Chapter 115: Shadows in the Night—The Shadow Long-winged Dragon

Sothoryos Continent, Pterodactyl Point

The rainforest of Pterodactyl Point at night was far more vibrant—and infinitely more lethal—than it was by day. When the sun dipped below the horizon, this tropical paradise donned a veil of mystery, revealing a world where the laws of nature were written in blood and shadow.

Jon stood atop the canopy of a gargantuan tree, nearly twenty leagues inland from his initial landing site. Unlike the swampy fringes, the heart of the rainforest was a labyrinth of vertical danger. During his trek, Jon had already fended off lizards the size of boats, silver-haired Great Apes, and pythons that could swallow a horse whole.

The most disturbing discovery, however, was the presence of indigenous humans. While humans sat atop the food chain in Westeros, here they were mere prey. These Sothoryos natives, primitive and stripped of what the civilized world called "wisdom," practiced a form of brutal cannibalism born of pure starvation rather than ritual or hatred. Jon had seen enough blood to last a lifetime, yet the sight of kin devouring kin still left a bitter taste of revulsion in his mouth.

The Ghostly Canopy

Darkness here was absolute. The dense canopy acted as a ceiling, allowing only skeletal shards of moonlight to pierce the gloom and form ghostly patterns on the forest floor. The air was heavy and saturated with moisture from a recent evening rain, the forest acting like a giant sponge that absorbed the deluge to fuel its frantic growth.

Every sound was amplified: the incessant hum of nocturnal insects, the flash of fireflies that looked like drifting embers, and the territorial croaks of gargantuan frogs. Yet, they were all merely background noise to the true master of the night.

The Shadow Long-winged Dragon.

Known in native tongues as the "Dark Magic Serpent," this creature was a ghost even in historical texts. Jon had only committed to finding it after discovering the charred remains of a black hatchling at Mosquito Bay. Unlike the brutish Swamp Dragons, the Shadow variant was a creature of pure malice.

The Predator's Play

Rustle... Crack.

Jon utilized his "Warg" connection with a local owl to extend his vision. In the high branches of a massive, sky-piercing tree, he found it.

The Shadow Long-winged Dragon was perched upside down like a titanic bat. Its tail, prehensile and serpentine, was coiled around a branch, while its talons gripped the bark with a vice-like hold. Its head, narrow and terrifying, scanned the darkness like a living searchlight.

It had found its prey.

To the northwest, hidden behind a curtain of broad leaves, were two massive silhouettes: a male and a female Great Ape. Jon had dubbed the Apes, Lizards, and Pythons the "Rainforest Trio"—the dominant terrestrial forces. Yet, even they left behind skeletal remains that hinted at a higher predator.

Under the faint moonlight, the apes were engaged in a primal ritual of procreation. Jon looked away briefly, more out of a sense of "visual pollution" than modesty, but the Shadow Dragon watched with an unnerving, focused intensity. It seemed to wait for a specific moment of vulnerability.

Death from the Dark

SWISH—!

As the apes reached their crescendo, the Shadow Dragon dropped. Its wings didn't flap; they unfurled like a tattered, wind-catching umbrella, slowing its descent just enough to maintain absolute silence. This was the "Shadow Dive"—a specialized hunting technique unique to its kind.

THUD—HISS!

The dragon slammed into the male ape. In a blur of movement, its talons and obsidian-sharp teeth shredded the ape's limbs, effectively hobbling the giant in seconds.

The female ape let out a roar of primal fury, swinging a massive fist at the intruder. With a flick of its long, whip-like tail, the Shadow Dragon swatted the female into a tree with enough force to shatter the bark. Before she could recover, the dragon pinned her to the earth.

What followed was a display of sadistic dominance. The Shadow Dragon didn't immediately kill its prey; it seemed to revel in the male ape's forced witness of its mate's agony.

"This isn't just a beast," Jon whispered, his eyes narrowing as he watched the dragon's almost-human expressions of cruel satisfaction. "This is a remnant—a mutation of a Valyrian experiment."

Jon began to plan. In his recent captures, he had found that while most Long-winged Dragons were dim-witted, their souls were fiercely resistant to his "Dragon Lord" influence. The Shadow Dragon, with its twisted intelligence and dark soul, would be his most difficult—and valuable—acquisition yet.

The Shadow Dragon let out a low, vibrant hiss, its eyes glowing with a sickly light in the dark. The harvest of the night was just beginning.
