Harry held up his own letter and blinked at the words, then looked at her.
"What is this, Raven?"
"It looks like we've been accepted to some sort of school," she said, eyes scanning over the Hogwarts crest at the top of the page.
He tilted the parchment in his hand. "It says Witchcraft and Wizardry. Does that mean I can use magic?"
Raven scratched the side of her head. "I mean, that seems pretty self-explanatory. It says School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An owl just delivered it. When have you ever heard of letters arriving by post that aren't from a mailbox?"
Harry furrowed his brow and muttered, "You know what? I think my snake talking ability might be this magical stuff that this letter is talking about. And remember how I made that glass cover disappear on that big snake exhibit when Dudley was messing around with me?"
Raven let out a short laugh. "Oh, I remember that one really well."
"So me and you are going to a wizard and witchcraft school?"
"I think going to a school like that would be fun," Raven said, folding her arms with a small bit of interest.
Harry looked around, thoughtful. "What about Claire and all the other kids here? We would miss them."
Raven gave him a look. "Come on, Harry. You know we would come home during the summer break. And school is probably only a few years. When we get older, we can get part-time jobs in the summer and help out with expenses here. After all, Claire is really scraping together a lot for us to enjoy our own ice cream cakes."
She added with a smile, "And we can also help Officer Timothy Claremont. And who knows, maybe we could help reform Dudley once he gets out of juvenile detention at eighteen."
Harry scoffed, his mouth twitching. "As if anything could rehabilitate Dudley, except for perhaps a really strict regimented diet."
Raven burst into a laughter with him. "I think you're just trying to be mean to Dudley right now."
"No, no, no. He does need to cut out the snacks, and I'm sure he will be fine in there. Even though they feed the kids in juvenile detention based on a diabetic lifestyle and diet."
Raven shuddered visibly. "That sounds like a nightmare."
"I know," Harry said with a grimace. "They're not allowed to have any hot dishes or anything. The rumors I've heard about it are very unpleasant they actually have to eat vegetables."
They both laughed again, the sound easing the strange weight of the letters in their hands.
Then Raven tilted her head. "Speaking of which, I don't think we should tell—well, actually, I think we might be able to tell Claire about this."
Harry looked at her. "You don't think we should keep it from her?"
Raven shook her head. "No, I think we should tell her. After all, she's our guardian."
Harry nodded. "All right, let's go."
Together, they walked into the living room. Claire sat comfortably in her usual chair, knitting a small green sweater for one of the younger children. Her eyes lifted as they approached.
Raven stepped forward and handed her the letter.
"Oh, Raven, what's this you have here?" Claire asked, setting her knitting aside.
She unfolded the parchment and began reading, her brow furrowing as she reached the end.
"Is this some kind of joke?"
Raven spoke clearly. "No. We received it through an owl that dropped it off in front of our feet. I think this is completely legitimate, Ms. Claire. I really want to go to this wizarding school. Harry even got the same letter as me."
Claire turned to Harry. "Harry, did you get the same letter too?"
Harry nodded and handed his to her.
She read it carefully, eyes narrowing in thought. "I've never heard of this Albus Dumbledore or a school of witchcraft and wizardry called Hogwarts. Although, considering the unique circumstances around both of you, the fact is, if magic exists in this world—and from what I've observed you two doing when you think I'm not paying attention—I wouldn't be surprised if there's something unusual like that going on around here."
Raven blinked. "You have noticed some of the stuff that Harry and I can do?"
"I may be ignorant sometimes, but I'm not blind Raven," Claire said. "You both live under the same roof as me. You think I did not notice you doing some magical, spooky things sometimes, Raven? And the fact that Harry is always speaking to snakes in the garden—that's not exactly something that's easy to hide."
Harry scratched the back of his head. "I thought I hid that pretty well, actually."
Claire rolled her eyes. "As if, Harry."
Raven leaned in, curious. "What did you see me doing?"
Claire didn't hesitate to answer. "Does the fact that you are floating off the ground with your legs crossed in a meditative state seem unusual to you, Raven?"
Raven paused, then scratched her head again. "Yeah, I tend to do that when I'm napping."
She gave a light laugh. "Oh well. At least you don't have to worry too much about us. We'll get an education. And it says on the letter that all expenses are paid by the Ministry of Magic whatever that is."
Claire exhaled slowly. "I'm going to miss you two being around here. But I can see that this is important to you, too. So I'll support you with whatever decision you choose to make, whether to go or not."
