Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Iris Thorne POV

The moment Iris stepped into the temple, the entire gathering held its breath.

Thousands of wolves. Alphas. She-wolves. Guards. Priestesses. All of them going absolutely silent because something ancient had just walked into their sacred space.

She could see them.

Kael stood on the center step, and when his eyes found her, his face went white like all the blood had drained from his body. Then it turned red. Fury. Realization. Horror. Everything at once.

Theron moved forward with careful steps like he was afraid she would disappear if he moved too fast. His silver hair caught the moonlight. His green eyes were full of apologies he hadn't spoken yet.

Damon tensed like a coiled rope about to snap. His scarred face twisted with something that looked like pain and desperate hope mixed together. His dying wolf was responding to her presence, trying to claw its way back to life.

Caspian's charming mask slipped. For just one moment, she saw the real him underneath. The one who knew he'd made a terrible mistake and couldn't fix it.

Ronan moved to the side, positioning himself to block any escape route. His gray eyes watched her with absolute certainty like he'd been waiting for her his entire life.

Iris smiled.

It wasn't kind. It wasn't warm. It was the smile of someone who'd suffered and survived and come back to make sure everyone knew exactly what they'd done.

She walked further into the temple, her boots echoing against the stone floor. Every step made the ground feel unstable. Power rolled off her in waves that made the gathered wolves want to bow.

"I came to say something," Iris said. Her voice was clear and steady. It carried to every corner of the temple, to every ear. To every heart in the room.

She looked directly at Kael.

"Three years ago you told me I was wolfless, powerless, and unworthy of standing in your presence, let alone bearing your mark." Iris repeated his words perfectly. Used his exact tone. Made them sound like weapons. "I reject you, Kael Varon. You are unworthy of standing in my presence, let alone earning my forgiveness."

The words hit him like a physical blow.

Kael's face crumpled. His mouth opened but no sound came out. His golden eyes filled with tears that he didn't bother hiding. His entire body went slack like something had broken inside him.

Theron stepped back like she'd struck him.

"I also reject you, Theron Ashwood. Pack law requires a Luna with her own power now. I am sorry." Iris threw his own gentle words back at him. "And I'm not sorry at all."

Theron's hand went to his chest. His face went pale.

Iris turned to Damon.

"I reject you, Damon Blackriver. You are pathetic." She used his exact words, the cruelty in his voice, and now he felt the full weight of them. "And you always will be."

Damon's knees buckled. His dying wolf howled inside him, a sound of complete devastation. He actually fell to his knees right there in front of everyone.

Caspian tried to speak but she cut him off.

"I reject you, Caspian Silverlake. This is personal." She flipped his words around. "This is very personal."

He stood frozen like someone had turned him to stone.

Finally she looked at Ronan.

"And I reject you, Ronan Stormclaw. You were below my notice then. You still are." She didn't use his exact words because he hadn't said anything. She just made sure he knew she could see him. That she wasn't afraid of him.

For the first time, Ronan's certain expression wavered.

The phantom mate bonds reached for her then. She could feel them trying to pull at her. Trying to complete themselves. Trying to drag her back toward the five Alphas. The broken connections were desperate to mend.

She ignored them completely.

Iris turned her back to all five Kings and started walking toward the temple doors. The crowd parted for her without being told. Wolves dropped their eyes. People moved out of her way like she was made of fire.

Behind her she heard Kael make a sound like his heart was breaking.

"Wait," he called out, his voice shattered. "Iris, please. I can explain."

She didn't stop. Didn't turn around. Just kept walking.

Theron tried to move toward her but Garrett blocked him. Damon was still on his knees, completely broken. Caspian reached out with a hand he knew she wouldn't take. Ronan just watched her leave with an expression that looked almost like respect.

The temple erupted behind her.

Shouting. Chaos. Alphas trying to follow. Guards uncertain whether to stop her. Priestesses calling for order. Thousands of voices rising in confusion and shock.

But Iris kept walking.

She reached the temple doors and they swung open for her like they'd been waiting. The night air hit her face and tasted like power and vengeance and something else. Something that felt like destiny.

Silver light crackled across her skin suddenly. Not controlled. Wild. Furious. It sparked around her fingers and her eyes and her whole body.

The ground beneath her feet trembled.

Not a small tremor. A real earthquake that made the entire temple shudder. Stone columns wobbled. The gathered crowd screamed. Alphas fought for balance.

The power inside her was responding to her emotions. To the satisfaction of finally throwing those words back at them. To the knowledge that she'd broken five of the most powerful Alphas in existence with just a few sentences.

She'd come back for vengeance.

And vengeance had just arrived with a force that made the whole world shake.
