Chapter 7 - DEFENDING HIS MATE

Kael's POV

The Elder chamber is packed before they even arrive.

Kael can feel the hostile energy bleeding through the walls as he leads Mira down the corridor. His hand is on the small of her back, a touch that keeps him grounded when everything in him wants to explode into violence. The bond is humming between them, her fear feeding his rage in a vicious cycle.

She's terrified.

He can taste it. Can feel it flooding through their connection like poison. And every second of her fear makes his control slip further.

"Stay with me," he tells her quietly as they reach the chamber doors. "Do not let them see you break."

Mira nods but he can feel her trembling. She's wearing a borrowed dress from Isla, something that fits better than Kael's shirt did. But it doesn't matter what she's wearing. The pack will see her as they always have. As less. As nothing.

He's going to burn this place down if they hurt her.

The doors open and they step inside.

The chamber erupts immediately. Angry voices. Hostile stares. Alphas and Betas and noble families all gathered to decide whether Mira deserves to live. Kael positions himself between her and the crowd, his body a shield, his presence a threat.

Elder Thaddeus sits at the head of the council table. Beside him sits Elder Morgana, ancient and bitter and radiating pure disdain. The other Elders spread out along the table like judges about to hand down a death sentence.

Seraphina stands near the front, looking absolutely devastated. Her eyes are red. Tears stream down her perfect face. She's dressed in mourning colors like someone has died.

Someone's about to.

"Kael Stormborne," Thaddeus begins carefully. "You have claimed a mate. This is your right as an unmated Alpha. However, the circumstances are highly questionable. We need to understand exactly what happened during the hunt."

"The bond is complete," Kael says flatly. "That is all that matters."

Elder Morgana stands and her voice cuts through the air like a knife.

"This bond is an abomination. An Omega mated to our strongest warrior will weaken the pack bloodline. Omegas are meant for service, not for leadership. This girl will taint everything she touches."

Mira flinches. Kael feels her fear spike and something inside him snaps.

Then Seraphina's voice rises over the others, broken and beautiful and absolutely deadly.

"Kael, you have to listen to us," she sobs. "I do not want to believe this either but the evidence is clear. She used dark magic to trap you during the hunt. Omegas can manipulate scent. They can cast spells. She seduced you with witchcraft and now you are bound to her because of it."

The words hit like a physical blow to the chamber.

Other nobles stand up and agree. Their voices layer over each other, each one more convinced than the last that Mira is a witch who cursed their strongest warrior.

Mira shrinks backward and Kael feels it like claws raking through his chest.

That's when his control breaks completely.

His Alpha dominance explodes outward like a shockwave. Raw power floods the entire chamber, crashing against every wolf present with the force of a falling mountain. Weaker ones drop to their knees. Warriors stumble backward. Even the Elders feel it, ancient as they are.

Kael's eyes glow amber as he turns to face the crowd.

"Anyone who touches her dies," he says, his voice carrying a weight that makes the air vibrate. "Anyone who questions her dies. Anyone who even looks at her wrong dies."

It's not a threat. It's a statement of absolute fact.

The room goes completely silent.

Nobody moves. Nobody speaks. Everyone in the chamber is suddenly very aware that they are in a room with the most dangerous predator in the pack and that predator is about to kill someone.

Then Elder Linnea stands. She's the only Elder who doesn't radiate hostility. Her weathered face is sad but accepting.

"The bond is complete," she says carefully. "By pack law, a mated bond cannot be severed without killing both parties. The girl is Kael's mate whether we like it or not. She stays."

It's the only victory available but Kael takes it.

Except Elder Ronan rises slowly from his seat.

He's Seraphina's grandfather. Old. Powerful. Connected to every noble family through bloodline and marriage. His eyes are cold as winter.

"Then we will have a trial," Ronan says, his voice carrying the weight of generations. "If the girl is truly fit to stand beside our greatest warrior, let her prove it. Three challenges, Elder chosen. If she fails even one, the bond is annulled and she is exiled from pack territory."

Kael starts to refuse but Mira's hand finds his.

He looks down at her and sees something shift in her violet eyes. Fear is still there. But something else is rising underneath it. Something like determination.

"I accept," she says quietly.

The words echo through the chamber.

Everyone stops moving. Kael feels the shock ripple through the watching crowd. An Omega challenging the Elders' authority. Volunteering for trials that are designed to break her.

Kael wants to reject it for her. Wants to pick her up and carry her away from this nightmare. But he realizes that refusing would make her look weak. It would prove to the pack that she cannot stand beside him.

She needs to do this.

He does not have to like it.

Elder Ronan smiles like he's just been handed a gift.

"Excellent. The first challenge will be survival. The girl will be sent alone into the Northern Hunting Grounds with no supplies for three days. If she returns alive, she passes. If not, the bond is void."

The Northern Hunting Grounds.

Where rogues killed her parents. Where she has never been strong enough to survive.

Kael can feel her fear exploding through the bond but she does not look away from Elder Ronan.

"When does it begin?" Mira asks.

"Three days from now," Ronan answers. "During the preparations for the Blood Moon Hunt. When wolves are distracted and no one will notice if you disappear forever."

He does not say it but the message is clear.

They are going to try to kill her.

Kael steps closer to Mira and lets his power fill the chamber one more time.

"If she dies out there, everyone responsible will die right here."

It's not a threat anymore. It's a fact.

And as they leave the chamber, Kael realizes that the real war has just started. The pack will not stop trying to eliminate her. The Elders will use these trials to break her. And Seraphina will be watching for any opportunity to finish what she started.

But Mira accepted the challenge.

Which means Kael has three days to prepare her to survive the impossible. Three days to turn an invisible servant girl into a warrior strong enough to face everything the pack can throw at her.

Three days before the first trial begins and everything changes.

He looks at her as they walk back to his quarters. She's staring straight ahead, her burned hands clenched into fists, her whole body vibrating with barely contained terror.

But she did not break.

Not in that chamber. Not in front of the Elders. Not even when facing certain death.

Something inside Kael shifts.

The Omega he claimed is stronger than anyone realized.

And he is going to make sure the whole pack knows it before this is over.
