Chapter 3 - THE SYSTEM

The cave smelled like wet stone and old death.

‎Cain sat with his back against the wall, his sisters pressed close on either side, and tried to stop shaking. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion that made his limbs feel like they belonged to someone else. His ice had retreated completely, leaving only a faint coldness in his chest that pulsed with his heartbeat.

‎They were alive.

‎Somehow, impossibly, they were alive.

‎"We need to talk about what just happened," Elizabeth said quietly. Her voice was steady—she was always steady, even when the world fell apart—but Cain could feel her trembling against his side.

‎"Which part?" Juliet's laugh was hollow. "The part where a monster tried to eat us? The part where Cain froze it with magic? The part where we're living in a nightmare?"

‎"All of it." Elizabeth turned to Cain. "You made ice. Actual ice. From nothing. How?"

‎Cain shook his head. "I don't know. I was scared. It just... happened."

‎"Like my light." Juliet held up her hands. They were still faintly glowing, a soft luminescence that pulsed with her heartbeat. "I don't know how to control it. It just comes when I'm scared or angry."

‎"And my feelings." Elizabeth touched her temple. "I knew something was coming before it arrived. I don't know how. I just... knew."

‎They sat in silence for a long moment.

‎"We're not human anymore," Cain said finally. "Whatever happened to us—the truck, the ice cave, the crystal—it changed us. We're something else now."

‎"Are we okay with that?" Juliet asked.

‎"Do we have a choice?"

‎She didn't answer.

‎---

‎The system appeared three hours later.

‎Cain was staring at the cave wall, too exhausted to sleep, when words suddenly burned across his vision—not on the wall, not in the air, but directly in his mind. Like a screen only he could see.

‎[INITIALIZING...]

‎[WELCOME, AETHELING]

‎[YOU HAVE BEEN REGISTERED]

‎[ACCESSING SURVIVAL PROTOCOLS...]

‎Cain jerked upright, his heart hammering. "What—"

‎Elizabeth gasped beside him. "Cain! There's something—"

‎"You see it too?"

‎"Words. In my head. Like a—"

‎"Screen." Juliet's voice was awed. "It's like a video game screen. In my brain."

‎All three stared at each other. All three saw the same thing.

‎[STATUS ACCESS: OPEN]

‎Information flooded their vision—not overwhelming, but organized. Clean. Almost familiar.

‎[DANGER WARNING] - Passive threat detection

‎[PROGRESS TRACKING] - Monitor growth and development

‎[WARNING: SYSTEM IS GUIDE ONLY. SURVIVAL DEPENDS ON USER.]

‎---

‎Cain stared at the screen in his mind. It was impossible. It was insane. It was—

‎[ACCESS SURVIVAL GUIDE? Y/N]

‎He thought "YES."

‎Information flooded his mind—not painful, just... there. Like knowledge that had always existed, waiting to be accessed.

‎[SURVIVAL BASICS]

‎FOOD:

‎· Purple-berried bushes = SAFE (tested by local fauna)

‎· Orange tree fungus = SAFE (tested by local fauna)

‎· Small game = Edible but requires hunting tools

‎· Stream water = SAFE (magic-tainted but harmless to Aethelings)

‎DANGER:

‎· Six-legged predators = AVOID. Speed: 80. Strength: 200. Cannot outrun.

‎· Night hunting = Most predators active after dark. Fire provides minimal protection.

‎· Territorial creatures = Marked areas. Leave immediately if detected.

‎SHELTER:

‎· Current location = Temporary. Damp. No defensible exit.

‎· Priority = Find cave with single entrance. Defensible. Dry.

‎· Distance = 2km northeast. Signal detected.

‎[LOCATE SHELTER? Y/N]

‎Cain looked at his sisters. They were staring into space, clearly reading their own screens.

‎"Do you see it?" he asked. "The shelter location?"

‎Elizabeth nodded slowly. "Two kilometers northeast. It says defensible."

‎"It says dry." Juliet shuddered. "This cave is freezing and wet. I don't know how much longer I can—" Her light flickered weakly. "I'm so tired."

‎"We all are." Cain pushed himself to his feet. "But we can't stay here. If that thing comes back—"

‎"Can we make it two kilometers?" Elizabeth asked.

‎"Can we afford not to try?"

‎---

‎They moved.

‎The forest at night was worse than they imagined. Shadows moved where shadows shouldn't move. Sounds came from everywhere and nowhere. The system's [DANGER WARNING] pulsed occasionally—yellow for caution, never red for immediate threat—guiding them around territories they shouldn't enter.

‎Cain watched his sisters' stats fluctuate as they walked.

‎[ELIZABETH - ENERGY: 31/38]

‎[JULIET - ENERGY: 28/42]

‎[CAIN - ENERGY: 35/45]

‎The numbers made it real. Made it measurable. They were draining just by moving, just by being awake, just by surviving.

‎"We need to rest," he said. "The system says our energy is dropping."

‎"Mine too." Elizabeth's voice was strained. "What happens when it hits zero?"

‎[ENERGY ZERO = UNCONSCIOUSNESS. PROLONGED ZERO = DEATH.]

‎The system answered before Cain could.

‎"We can't stop," Juliet said. "We're almost there. I can feel it."

‎Her light pulsed—brighter now, as if responding to her determination.

‎Two kilometers became one. One became half. Half became—

‎The cave.

‎It was perfect. A narrow entrance, just wide enough for one person to squeeze through, opening into a chamber twice the size of their previous shelter. Dry. Dark. Defensible. And at the back—

‎[FOOD SOURCE DETECTED]

‎[GLOW MOSS - EDIBLE. NUTRITIOUS. GROWS IN DARKNESS.]

‎Blue-green moss covered the back wall, glowing faintly, beautiful and bizarre.

‎Juliet laughed—a real laugh, not hollow. "We found it. We actually found it."

‎Elizabeth slid down the wall, exhaustion finally claiming her. "Check for threats. Then sleep. We need sleep."

‎Cain checked. The system confirmed: no threats. No predators. No dangers.

‎They ate moss (it tasted like nothing, but filled their stomachs). They drank from a small pool at the cave's deepest point (the system confirmed: safe). They curled together in the center of the chamber, wings spread beneath them like blankets, and slept.

‎For the first time since waking in Albion, they slept without fear.

‎[PROGRESS UPDATE]

‎[SHELTER SECURED]

‎[FOOD SOURCE IDENTIFIED]

‎[WATER SOURCE IDENTIFIED]

‎[IMMEDIATE SURVIVAL: ACHIEVED]

‎[NEXT PRIORITIES]

‎1. Train abilities

‎2. Develop techniques

‎3. Explore surroundings safely

‎4. Understand this world

‎[TECHNIQUE CREATION - NOW AVAILABLE]

‎Techniques are developed through practice, focus, and understanding.

‎The system provides inspiration. The user provides execution.

‎Train. Fail. Try again. Succeed.

‎[ACCESS TECHNIQUE INSPIRATION? Y/N]

‎Cain was too tired to think about it. Tomorrow. He would think about it tomorrow.

‎For now, he held his sisters and listened to them breathe.

‎For now, that was enough.
