Chapter 9 - The Family Dinner

The room remained silent after the grandfather's shocking words.

"I have already arranged another marriage for you."

Emily's heart pounded as she slowly turned to Alexander.

"What… does he mean?" she asked quietly.

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"Grandfather, that arrangement is no longer relevant," he said firmly. "I am already married."

The old man leaned back in his chair, studying the two of them carefully.

"Yes," he replied slowly. "But that does not mean I must approve of it."

Emily felt the tension in the room growing heavier.

Alexander stepped slightly closer to her, his voice calm but firm.

"Emily is my wife. That will not change."

The old man's sharp eyes narrowed slightly.

"We will see."

He stood up slowly, using his cane for support.

"Tonight there will be a family dinner," he continued. "All the important members of the Knight family will attend."

Emily swallowed nervously.

"And Emily will join us."

Alexander immediately understood what his grandfather was planning.

"You're testing her."

The old man smiled faintly.

"Of course I am."

Emily looked between them.

"A test?" she asked.

The old man nodded.

"If she truly belongs in this family, she will survive tonight."

Emily forced a small smile, though inside she felt extremely nervous.

"Understood, sir."

The old man gave a satisfied nod before walking out of the room.

Once he left, Emily finally exhaled.

"That man is terrifying," she whispered.

Alexander chuckled slightly.

"You handled him better than most people."

Emily shook her head.

"I have a bad feeling about this dinner."

Before Alexander could respond, a familiar voice echoed from the doorway.

"Oh, you should."

Emily froze.

Slowly, she turned toward the door.

Sophia was standing there, leaning casually against the frame, a confident smile on her face.

"Because tonight," Sophia said sweetly,

"the entire Knight family will be watching you."

Emily felt her stomach drop.

Sophia's smile grew even wider.

"And trust me… they're not very welcoming."
