Chapter 2 - The Guide of Forgotten Souls

The rain had stopped, but Belrain remained shrouded in a thick fog, as if the world itself refused to reveal its secrets. Lyra walked through the deserted streets, hands trembling, still shaken by the vision of Kael and the menacing silhouette that had brushed past her the night before. Her mind was a chaos of fragmented memories and unanswered questions: Why me? What does this entity want? And, above all, who is Kael really?

She couldn't help but replay his face in her mind: intense blue, mysterious, almost too perfect to be human. A mixture of fear and fascination enveloped her, and she found herself searching for his presence, even in his absence. But before she could lose herself in her thoughts, a figure emerged from the shadows, light and silent.

"Lyra Sombrelune," said a voice, soft yet firm.

Lyra jumped and stepped back. Before her stood a woman of strange beauty, amber eyes and silver hair shining like moonlight. Her cloak floated around her like a living mist.

"Who are you?" Lyra asked, wary but intrigued.

"I am Maelis," the woman replied calmly. "I am here to teach you what you cannot understand on your own."

A shiver ran down Lyra's spine. Everything inside her screamed that this woman was not just a guide; she was a key to unraveling the mystery that had obsessed her for weeks.

"Why me?" Lyra asked. "Why am I bound to Kael? Why do I have these visions?"

Maelis smiled, but it was a smile tinged with gravity and sadness.

"Because you are one of the few who can break—or preserve—the cycle of souls. Every life you have lived leaves a mark on this world. Kael and you have been connected for centuries. Every mistake, every love, every loss—it all echoes into the present."

Before Lyra could react, Maelis raised her hand, and a veil of light enveloped Lyra. Her fragmented memories materialized before her like shards of glowing glass. She saw places she instinctively recognized though she had never visited them, faces she knew without ever meeting, moments of love, loss, and battle. Each flash shook her deeply.

"These memories are yours," Maelis explained. "But they are more than echoes of the past. They are clues for surviving and understanding what is coming. You must learn to read them… and to control them."

Lyra felt her heart race. The visions were both fascinating and terrifying. She saw an ancient battle, Kael at her side—not as she knew him now, but younger, harder, and yet somehow familiar. Then she saw herself crying in a field of black roses, another version of herself screaming a name she could not understand.

"Kael…" she whispered, despite herself.

Maelis's eyes flickered with knowing.

"Yes. Kael is bound to you, but he carries his own secrets and wounds. You will have to learn to read his intentions while facing the forces that seek to separate you."

A rustle behind them made Lyra raise her head. In the shadow of the fog, a moving figure observed them. She could not discern its features, but the threat was palpable. Her instinct screamed to run, but Maelis placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Not yet," she murmured. "You must see and understand before you flee."

Suddenly, Kael emerged from the fog, a familiar shadow stepping into the dim light. His blue eyes fell on Lyra, a mixture of urgency and tenderness shining in them.

"Lyra," he said softly, "the danger is closer than ever."

"Who… who is watching us?" Lyra asked, her voice trembling.

Kael's hand gripped hers lightly, a protective gesture laden with tension.

"You will see soon enough. But know this: it's only the beginning. What you've seen in your visions was just a fragment of the puzzle. The real danger comes now, and we will have to fight—and survive—together."

Lyra's breath caught. The mixture of fear and excitement coursing through her was overwhelming. Kael's presence, Maelis's voice, the omnipresent fog—all created unbearable tension. She realized that her life had shifted into a dimension where time, danger, and heart intertwined.

As the wind rippled through the mist, a figure suddenly appeared behind Kael. Its eyes glowed with a sinister light, and shards of dark magic seemed to swirl around it. Kael instinctively stepped in front of Lyra, but the shadow's power shook the balance of everything around them.

"Step back!" he shouted, but Lyra could not move.

A luminous burst from Maelis's hand struck the shadow, which let out a chilling laugh before vanishing into the fog. Silence returned, but the palpable adrenaline and fear made the air almost suffocating.

Kael turned to Lyra, breathing heavily, eyes gleaming with something she had never seen before: a mixture of concern, protection… and something deeper.

"Lyra," he murmured, "that was only a taste. What we are about to face… will change everything."

Lyra felt her heart tighten. She understood that this bond between them was stronger than anything she had imagined. And as Maelis faded into the fog to leave them, she knew her life, her destiny, and her heart were now entangled in a cycle she could never break alone.

And just as she thought the danger had passed, a cold voice echoed through the air:

"Lyra Sombrelune… the cycle begins now, and no life will save you."
