Chapter 43 - Compound Mishap: The “Accidental” Date

By evening, Lyra had decided the only solution left was "controlled romance."

Which meant dinner.

At the compound.

With suspiciously curated seating arrangements.

Vesper realized something was wrong the moment she walked into the dining room.

There were only two place settings.

Across from each other.

Candles.

Dorian coughed to hide laughter.

Cassian stood by the wall like someone awaiting disaster.

Valentina leaned against the doorway.

Kael was pouring wine.

Lyra appeared behind Vesper with a flourish.

"Surprise!"

Vesper turned slowly.

"No."

Lyra gestured proudly.

"Yes."

Aurelio walked in seconds later and stopped short.

He looked at the table.

Then at Lyra.

"…What is this."

Lyra clasped her hands.

"Emotional intervention."

Aurelio closed his eyes briefly.

Vesper pointed at Kael.

"You're involved."

He shrugged.

"Strategically."

Valentina raised a glass.

"To progress."

Dorian added,

"To chaos."

Cassian muttered,

"To regret."

Lyra clapped.

"Sit!"

Neither of them moved.

Lyra sighed dramatically.

"Fine."

She grabbed both their sleeves and physically dragged them toward the table.

"Dinner."

Vesper sat reluctantly.

Aurelio sat across from her.

Lyra backed away slowly.

The entire group remained in the doorway watching.

Aurelio glanced at them.

"Leave."

Lyra whispered loudly,

"MAKE A MOVE."

Valentina pulled her out of the room.

Dorian followed laughing.

Cassian shut the door behind them.

Silence settled.

Vesper exhaled.

"This is humiliating."

Aurelio rubbed his forehead.

"Yes."

She looked at him across the candlelight.

"Your siblings are monsters."

He looked up.

"They're your siblings now too."

She laughed despite herself.

And for the first time that evening—

The tension softened.

Not forced.

Not political.

Just two people sitting across from each other while chaos lingered outside the door.

And somewhere in the hallway, Lyra whispered:

"Okay now we wait."

Valentina sighed.

"You are impossible."

Lyra grinned.

"But effective."
