Chapter 32 - Unwanted Admirers

Helix Academy shifted after the Council vote collapsed.

It wasn't dramatic. No banners. No speeches.

Just… space.

People stood a little closer to Vesper in the corridors now. Not in awe — in curiosity. Like she'd become something new overnight. Not just the heiress. Not just the girl who caught a falling aircraft.

She was a variable.

And variables made people bold.

Advanced Systems Analysis was unusually full that morning. Even students who normally skipped had shown up. Halvorsen didn't comment on it. He rarely commented on anything that wasn't structural instability.

Vesper slid into her seat. Valentina sat to her right. Kael two rows back. Aurelio across the aisle.

There was an undercurrent she couldn't quite name.

Halfway through lecture, while Halvorsen droned on about harmonic frequency stabilization, a voice from the back cut cleanly through the room.

"Vale."

Not mocking. Not hostile.

Just direct.

Vesper turned her head slowly.

Ronan Hale leaned back in his chair like he'd rehearsed this.

He had the easy posture of someone who had never been publicly humiliated in his life. Minor light-bending variant. Solid academic standing. Annoyingly symmetrical face.

"Yes?" she asked evenly.

He didn't rush. That was almost worse.

"I was going to wait until after class," he said, "but it seemed inefficient."

Several students leaned subtly closer.

"Efficient for what?" she asked.

"For asking if you'd like to get coffee with me."

Silence.

Utter silence.

Even Halvorsen stopped mid-sentence.

Valentina's head turned slowly.

Kael went completely still.

Aurelio's pen snapped in his hand with a sharp crack that echoed embarrassingly loud in the quiet room.

Ronan blinked once, mildly impressed.

"Structural failure?" he asked dryly.

Aurelio didn't respond. He set the broken pen down with controlled precision.

Vesper didn't look at him.

She kept her eyes on Ronan.

"Coffee," she repeated.

"Yes."

"In public."

"Yes."

"You understand I am currently the subject of political instability and targeted extremist attacks."

He nodded. "I assumed we would choose a place with reinforced flooring."

There were a few stifled laughs.

She tilted her head slightly.

"You're either brave or poorly informed."

"Probably both," he admitted. "But I don't make decisions based on Council optics."

There was something refreshingly uncalculated about that.

Before she could answer—

Aurelio stood abruptly.

"I need air."

Halvorsen stared at him. "The air is identical outside."

"I'm aware."

He left anyway.

The door closed harder than necessary.

Lyra, seated two rows behind Vesper, leaned forward and whispered loudly enough for half the class to hear:

"He snapped a pen. That's never a good sign."

Valentina elbowed her gently.

Ronan looked between Vesper and the now-closed door.

"…Should I reschedule?"

Vesper allowed herself the smallest breath of amusement.

"No," she said. "I prefer inefficient timing."

The room hummed back to life.

But the shift had happened.

And everyone felt it.
