Chapter 6 - The Bedroom Was Empty

Naruto ran.

His feet hit the dock, then the dirt road, then the stairs of the inn so fast he felt nothing beneath them. Just motion. Just need. The darkness inside him stretched ahead like a hunting dog, tasting the air, searching for the thing that mattered most.

She's not there, it whispered. He took her.

"Shut up."

I'm not being cruel. I'm being honest. You'll feel it soon enough.

Naruto hit Sakura's door so hard it splintered off its hinges.

The bed was made. Window open. Curtains moving in the night wind. No Sakura. No struggle. Just a single cherry blossom petal on the pillow, pink against white, placed there like a signature.

Behind him, Sasuke appeared in the hallway. Tousled hair. Sharingan already spinning.

"Where is she?"

Naruto couldn't answer. His throat was closed. His chest was empty. The darkness inside him stirred with something that felt almost like sympathy.

He wants you to follow. It's a trap.

"I know."

He'll use her to make you give me up.

"I know."

If you go, you might lose. If you lose, he takes me back and you die and she dies anyway.

Naruto turned. Looked at Sasuke. His black eyes were wet.

"Then I won't lose."

He jumped out the window.

Sasuke followed without hesitation.

---

The forest ate them both.

Night wrapped around the trees like a second skin, thick and watchful. Naruto moved through it like he belonged there, like the darkness parted for him willingly. Maybe it did. Maybe the fruit was finally learning who was in charge.

The hunter's trail was easy to follow. He wasn't hiding. He wanted to be found.

They reached a clearing. Moonlight poured down like water, silver and cold. In the center, Sakura sat on a fallen log. Unharmed. Confused. Rubbing her head like she'd been hit.

"Sakura!" Naruto started forward.

A hand caught his ankle and yanked.

He hit the ground face-first. Roots wrapped around his wrists, his waist, his throat—not plants, but shadows given form, solid as steel. The hunter rose from the earth beside him, dust and darkness falling from his coat.

"Children," he sighed. "So predictable."

Sasuke threw a fireball. The hunter didn't move. The flames passed through him, lit the trees behind him, did nothing at all.

"Your girlfriend is fine," the hunter said, ignoring Sasuke completely. "I didn't touch her. I don't need to hurt people to get what I want. I just need you to listen."

Naruto struggled against the roots. They tightened.

"I've been dead three hundred years. Do you know what that's like? Watching the world move on without you? Watching your power pass from hand to hand, user to user, all of them weak, all of them unworthy?" The hunter crouched beside him. "Then you ate it. A child. A vessel for a demon. And you know what I felt?"

Naruto spat in his face.

The hunter wiped it slowly. Smiled.

"Hope."

He stood. Walked to Sakura. Ran a finger along her cheek without touching, just tracing the air above her skin.

"I can't take the fruit back. I know that now. It chose you. That bond can't be broken." He turned. "But I can join you. Ride inside you like the fox does. Share your power. Your body. Your life."

Naruto went still.

"You're insane."

"No. I'm patient. I've waited three centuries. I can wait three more. Or thirty. Or three hundred." The hunter's smile widened. "But eventually, boy, you'll need help. Power you can't access. Knowledge you don't have. And when that day comes, I'll be here. Waiting. And you'll say yes."

He stepped back. The roots dissolved.

Sakura ran to Naruto, helped him up, held him so tight he couldn't breathe. Sasuke stood guard, Sharingan never stopping.

The hunter watched them with ancient eyes.

"Go home, children. Train. Grow. Fight your wars and chase your dreams. I'll be watching." He faded like mist. "And when you're ready... I'll be back."

The forest was silent.

Sakura was crying into Naruto's chest.

And somewhere in the darkness, an old ghost smiled.
