Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Seeking Knowledge

Chapter 12: Seeking Knowledge

Su Tianhao sat in stunned silence. 'Spoiled brat,' he thought with a mixture of irritation and pity. He understood the dynamics: Su Jian was the pampered, only child. The sudden appearance of an adopted brother was a direct threat to his identity.

Su Huiqing laughed awkwardly, embarrassment coloring his features. "Please don't take offense, Tianhao. Jian'er has always treasured his position. This... adjustment... is proving more difficult than I anticipated."

Su Tianhao shook his head with mature understanding. "No offense taken, Father. I imagine this situation is challenging for him."

"You're very understanding," Su Huiqing said with genuine gratitude. "Now then, how are you settling in? Do you have everything you need?"

"I'm doing very well. Ling... Xie Ling has been tremendously helpful in explaining how things work here."

"Ah yes, your attendant." Su Huiqing's eyebrows rose. "You seem to have developed quite a relationship with her."

"She's been patient with my questions," Su Tianhao said simply.

"Good. Do you have plans for today?"

Su Tianhao's eyes brightened. "Actually, I was hoping to visit the family library. I want to read about the region's history and the broader cultivation world."

Su Huiqing chuckled with delight. "Ah, I nearly forgot about your scholarly nature! By all means, make yourself at home among the books. Our library contains centuries of accumulated knowledge."

After leaving the apartment, Su Tianhao retraced his steps, his mind processing the morning's revelations. Su Jian would be a significant obstacle, but he had more pressing interests.

Arriving at his floor, he called out. "Ling Ling?"

Silence.

He tried again, louder. "Ling Ling!"

Just as he was about to search for her, the door across the hallway opened. Xie Ling emerged with a warm smile.

"Young Master," she called.

"Ling Ling! I was beginning to think you'd disappeared." He gestured toward the room she had just exited. "Do you live here now?"

"The Patriarch thought it more convenient if I had quarters close to yours," she explained.

"How thoughtful," Su Tianhao said with a knowing smile. His father was indeed taking his comfort and security very seriously. "Ling Ling, I'd like to visit the library. Could you show me the way?"

"My pleasure," Xie Ling smiled gracefully.

They descended to the first floor, passing through a maze of corridors until they reached a double-door entrance marked with brass inscriptions.

"This is the family's private library," Xie Ling whispered with respect. "Only the Patriarch, Elders, and direct descendants are permitted entry without special permission. This is as far as I can escort you."

Su Tianhao pushed open the heavy doors. The space beyond took his breath away. Towering shelves stretched to the ceiling, packed with more books than he had ever imagined.

At the central reading desk, a handsome man in his mid-thirties looked up. His piercing brown eyes seemed to see through Su Tianhao's very soul. His refined bearing marked him as someone of immense status.

"You must be Su Tianhao," the man said with pleasant surprise. "I had heard of your arrival, but you're quite a remarkable young man in person."

Su Tianhao felt those eyes searching him, seeing motivations he barely understood himself.

"You flatter me, Uncle..." Su Tianhao replied, leaving the title as a question.

"You may call me Uncle Yuan," the man said, a warm smile transforming his stern features. "Su Yuan, Fifth Elder of our family."

"Uncle Yuan, it's an honor to meet you" Su Tianhao replied with a formal bow.

"The honor is mine!" Su Yuan laughed. "What an interesting addition to our family. Tell me, what knowledge do you seek?"

"Knowledge about history and the cultivation world," Su Tianhao replied without hesitation. "I want to understand the broader context of my new life."

"A scholar's approach!" Su Yuan approved. "Third shelf on the right—regional histories. Start with the blue-bound volume: *Chronicles of the Azure East Continent*."

"Thank you, Uncle Yuan."

"Take your time," the Elder said, returning to his work. "Knowledge reveals itself to those patient enough to seek it."

As Su Tianhao walked toward the shelves, he felt a familiar thrill. Books had always been his escape from the harsh realities of street life, offering glimpses into worlds beyond his immediate experience. Now, surrounded by centuries of accumulated wisdom and with unlimited time to explore it, he felt like a starving man presented with an endless feast.

The chronicle was exactly where the elder had described. He carefully opened the book, his golden eyes scanning the elegant calligraphy that graced the first page. The ink seemed to shimmer with accumulated wisdom as he read aloud in a hushed whisper:

"Before one can walk the path of cultivation, one must understand the world upon which that path is built..."

The profound simplicity of the statement struck him. 'Such wisdom,' he murmured, settling deeper into his chair.

The chronicle continued: The world we inhabit is known as the Azure Dragon Continent, blessed with a rich history and martial heritage that follows the legacy of the legendary Azure Dragon.

Su Tianhao paused, glancing around the library. The silence felt almost sacred, broken only by the soft rustle of pages from Su Yuan's desk. The very continent bore a dragon's name—what did that suggest about the ancient powers that had once walked this land?

'The continent is divided among four great dynasties,' he read, then stopped abruptly. "Four?"

His voice carried enough surprise that Su Yuan looked up from his own studies. "Something interesting, young Tianhao?"

"Uncle Yuan," he called softly, "I thought the Great Long Dynasty ruled the world. This book mentions four equal powers."

Su Yuan chuckled, setting aside his tome. "Ah, the limitations of provincial knowledge. Yes, our Great Long Dynasty rules a vast area, but that is only the Eastern region. The West belongs to the Great Tian Dynasty, the South to the Great Han Dynasty, and the North serves the Great Tai Dynasty."

"And they're all... equal?" Su Tianhao asked, his worldview shifting like waves on a shore.

"More or less. Each controls vast territories with many kingdoms beneath them." Su Yuan rose and calmly approached Su Tianhao's table. "Here, let me show you something."

He moved to a different shelf and returned with a large atlas, spreading it across the table. The map revealed a staggering scope—four massive regions, each containing dozens of kingdoms, hundreds of countries, and countless cities.

"Longzhou Country," Su Yuan pointed to a small sliver in the Eastern region, "is merely one territory under the Azure Dragon Kingdom, which itself serves the Great Long Dynasty."

Su Tianhao stared at the map, feeling like a frog at the bottom of a well. "We're not even a speck on this scale."

"Precisely why education matters," Su Yuan said with a knowing smile. "Continue reading. You'll find the power hierarchies even more interesting."

Su Tianhao dove back into the text with renewed intensity. The next section detailed the cultivation realms, and his excitement grew as he recognized familiar names: Martial Apprentice, Martial Disciple, Martial Adept...

But then he reached unfamiliar territory: Martial Core, Martial Soul, Martial Master, Martial Grandmaster, Martial Lord, Martial King, Martial Monarch, Martial Emperor, and Martial Saint.

"Uncle Yuan," he called again, unable to contain his curiosity. "The books in Willow Creek only mentioned realms up to Martial Lord. Are these higher realms even real?"

Su Yuan's expression grew serious. "Very real, though increasingly rare. Martial Lords command cities; Martial Kings dominate countries; Martial Monarchs rule kingdoms." He paused, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Martial Emperors... they hold power beyond imagination. You can count the number of Martial Emperors on the continent on one hand. As for Martial Saints, none have appeared in ten thousand years."

"Ten thousand years," Su Tianhao repeated. "What happened back then?"

"That is a question scholars have debated for millennia. A great catastrophe, certainly, but the records are fragmented." Su Yuan's eyes glinted. "Perhaps one day, you'll help uncover those mysteries."

Su Tianhao nodded solemnly before turning the page, finding a new section on techniques and spirit beasts. The systematic rankings fascinated him: Mortal, Spirit, Earth, and Heaven ranks for techniques and weapons, each with grades of low, mid, high, and peak.

'Spirit beasts follow similar patterns,' he noted, reading of creatures that could match human cultivators. 'Grade One beasts equal Martial Apprentices, Grade Two match Martial Disciples...'

His reading was interrupted by his stomach, which growled audibly. The sound echoed through the quiet library, earning an amused look from the Elder.

"Perhaps that's enough learning for one session," Su Yuan suggested kindly. "Knowledge is best absorbed gradually, not devoured like a feast."

Su Tianhao glanced toward the windows, startled to see the late afternoon sunlight slanting through the glass. "I lost track of time completely."

"A scholar's curse," Su Yuan laughed. "But also our blessing. Return tomorrow—these books have waited centuries; they can wait another day."

As Su Tianhao returned the chronicle to its place, his mind buzzed with his new understanding of the world.

"Thank you for your guidance, Uncle Yuan," he said with a respectful bow.

"The pleasure was mine. It's refreshing to see such genuine curiosity." Su Yuan's expression grew thoughtful. "Tell me, what draws you to this knowledge? Pure curiosity, or something more?"

Su Tianhao considered the question. "I want to understand my place in this world. Where I fit, where I might go." He touched the hidden pendant beneath his robes. "Knowledge feels like... freedom. The freedom to choose my path with understanding, rather than stumbling blind through circumstance."

Su Yuan nodded approvingly. "Wisdom beyond your years. Tomorrow, I'll recommend some specific texts to guide you further."

Su Tianhao nodded with appreciation, the moment he stepped through the library doors, his eyes fell upon a graceful figure whose worried expression immediately caught his attention.

"Ling Ling?"

"Young Master!" Xie Ling's relief was evident as her shoulders sagged. "Thank heavens you've emerged. You missed lunch entirely."

Su Tianhao offered a sheepish smile. "I became so absorbed that time disappeared. The world is so much larger than I imagined."

"Knowledge is important," Xie Ling said gently, "but so is taking care of yourself. Come, let's get you dinner before the kitchens close."

As they walked, Su Tianhao viewed the compound with a new perspective. The wealth he had marveled at now seemed modest compared to the continental scope he had discovered, yet it felt more precious. This was his starting point.

"Ling Ling," he said thoughtfully, "do you ever wonder about the world beyond Oakwood City?"

"Sometimes," she replied. "Why do you ask?"

"Today I learned we're like a single star in a vast sky. There's so much more out there than I ever dreamed."

Xie Ling smiled. "And does that make our little star less important?"

Su Tianhao considered her question as they approached the kitchen. "No," he said firmly. "It makes it more precious. Even a single star can light the darkness for those who need guidance."

Meanwhile, in the main residence's grandest chamber, oil lamps cast flickering shadows across the faces of the assembled family elders. Their expressions were grave as they discussed news that would decide the fate of the Su family.
