Chapter 11 - Chapter 11- The Energy Revolutionary

Chapter 11 — The Energy Revolution

Weeks after the press conference, Metropolis began changing in ways that no one—citizens, scientists, or even Ethan himself—fully expected.

At first the transformation was subtle.

Infrastructure teams quietly moved through neighborhoods replacing outdated transformers and distribution nodes. Massive trucks arrived in industrial districts carrying new reactor-compatible converters. Entire substations were dismantled and rebuilt.

Most citizens assumed it was just another government infrastructure program.

Then the changes began to show.

Streetlights across the city burned brighter than ever before. The occasional flicker or blackout that had once plagued older districts disappeared entirely. Apartment complexes that once struggled with overloaded circuits suddenly had stable power at all hours.

Factories began running twenty-four hours a day without interruption.

Public transportation systems transitioned from diesel engines to electric propulsion faster than anyone predicted. Metropolis's famous skyrail network expanded service into previously underpowered districts.

And the most noticeable change of all—

The sky above the city became clearer.

Without coal plants or gas stations pumping pollutants into the atmosphere, the air quality improved dramatically. Citizens could see the stars at night more clearly than they had in decades.

All of this had happened in only six months.

.........

Inside the presidential office, Ethan reviewed the latest infrastructure report.

A small blue window appeared in his vision.

System Notification

Civilization Technology Index Updated

Current Advancement: +1.2%

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

Only that much?

System:

"Impressive progress. Humanity has discovered that unlimited electricity improves productivity."

A short pause followed.

System:

"Revolutionary concept."

Ethan leaned back in his chair.

You're mocking us again.

System:

"Correction: observing primitive civilization development is mildly entertaining."

Ethan sighed.

One day I'll unplug you.

System:

"Highly unlikely. Your species cannot yet build a screwdriver capable of disassembling my core."

Public Reaction

The citizens of Metropolis were thrilled.

News networks referred to the changes as "The Energy Renaissance."

Electricity costs plummeted. Industries expanded production. Technology companies relocated headquarters to Metropolis to take advantage of unlimited power.

Universities expanded robotics and AI programs. Research labs that once rationed electricity now ran high-energy experiments continuously.

Clark Kent's article in the Daily Planet summarized the situation perfectly:

"In less than half a year, Metropolis has achieved what many nations hoped to accomplish over several decades."

But the article also ended with a question.

"The Arc Reactor represents extraordinary power. The world will now watch carefully to see how that power is used."

Criminal Attention

Naturally, criminals noticed as well.

Energy technology this powerful was too valuable to ignore.

Within weeks, multiple criminal groups attempted to infiltrate Arc Reactor facilities.

Black market engineers tried stealing converter components.

Data thieves attempted to hack the Science Sector.

Several small-time villains tried crude break-ins.

None succeeded.

Security systems caught every attempt.

A report appeared in Ethan's system interface.

System:

"Detected: six criminal attempts to obtain Arc Reactor technology."

Another line appeared beneath it.

System:

"Human greed functioning within predicted parameters."

Ethan smirked.

So far nothing serious.

System:

"Correction."

Another notification appeared.

System:

"Observation: higher-tier individuals are now paying attention."

............

In his office overlooking Metropolis, Lex Luthor studied holographic Arc Reactor models.

His scientists had been analyzing the technology for months.

None could replicate the energy density.

Lex folded his hands.

"The president claims this technology was developed by human scientists."

One researcher nodded nervously.

"Yes, sir."

Lex smiled faintly.

"And yet… the physics does not cooperate."

He stood and looked out toward the glowing skyline of Metropolis.

"Which means one of two things."

"Either the president is hiding something…"

"…or humanity has finally created a breakthrough worthy of my attention."

.............

Deep beneath Wayne Manor, Batman reviewed satellite data.

Arc Reactor energy signatures pulsed across Metropolis like a network of stars.

Alfred stood nearby.

"Quite an impressive technological achievement, Master Bruce."

Batman didn't respond immediately.

After a moment he said quietly,

"Too impressive."

Alfred raised an eyebrow.

"You suspect foul play?"

Batman shook his head slightly.

"No."

He stared at the reactor energy readings.

"I suspect something we don't understand yet.

................

High above Earth, aboard the Justice League's orbital headquarters, several members of the Justice League studied a holographic projection of Metropolis.

Multiple glowing points marked the Arc Reactor installations throughout the city.

At the center of the room floated a rotating Earth projection.

Superman folded his arms as he studied the display.

"That's the sixth reactor installed this month."

Beside him, Wonder Woman watched the energy readouts.

"It seems peaceful enough," she said. "The city is benefiting."

Across the table, Flash leaned forward curiously.

"Okay but seriously… how did humans build something like that so fast?"

Another voice answered calmly.

Batman appeared on the holographic screen via remote connection.

"That's exactly the question."

Flash rubbed his chin.

"You think the president is hiding alien tech?"

Batman didn't immediately respond.

"Possibly."

Superman spoke then, his voice calm but thoughtful.

"I've been monitoring the reactors personally."

Everyone turned to him.

"They're stable. Clean energy. No radiation, no unusual emissions."

He paused.

"And the city really is better because of them."

Wonder Woman nodded.

"Then perhaps we should simply allow humanity its moment of progress."

Flash shrugged.

"Yeah. I mean, unlimited clean energy sounds pretty awesome."

Batman's voice cut in again.

"Progress is good."

The room fell quiet.

"But power attracts attention."

Everyone understood what he meant.

..........

Back in Metropolis, Ethan stood by the window of his office.

The city glittered under Arc Reactor power.

Factories hummed.

Transportation lines glowed softly across the skyline.

For the first time in decades, Metropolis felt like a city of the future.

A system message appeared.

System:

"Civilization development accelerating."

Another line appeared beneath it.

System:

"Warning: technological progress attracting attention from high-level individuals."

Ethan smiled faintly.

Lex Luthor is investigating.

Batman is suspicious.

The Justice League is watching.

That was fine.

None of them could reproduce the Arc Reactor.

Not without the system.

System:

"Probability of independent human replication: 0.00029%."

A pause.

System:

"Rounded up generously."

Ethan chuckled quietly.

Then he looked out at the glowing skyline again.

Metropolis had taken its first step forward.

But the next stage of humanity's evolution would require more than energy.

It would require protection.

And somewhere inside the system's vast technology catalog…

Ethan already knew the project that would come next.
