The creature's red eyes locked onto Renor.
For a moment, the world seemed to fall silent.
The wheat field rustled softly around them as the villagers backed away in fear. Hunter Bram struggled to rise from the ground where the monster had thrown him, clutching his injured shoulder.
The creature tilted its head slightly, studying Renor.
Renor tightened his grip on the shovel.
He didn't know why he had stepped forward.
Maybe instinct.
Maybe stupidity.
Or maybe something deeper.
The monster hissed again, its claws digging into the soil.
Then it lunged.
Renor barely had time to react.
"Renor!" someone shouted.
He swung the shovel with everything he had.
CLANG.
The metal slammed against the creature's skull. The impact sent a shock through Renor's arms, and the monster staggered sideways with a furious screech.
But it didn't fall.
Instead, it turned toward him slowly.
Its glowing eyes burned with rage now.
"Back away!" Hunter Bram shouted.
Arrows flew through the air.
Two struck the monster's back.
Another pierced its shoulder.
Still, the creature refused to die.
Renor's chest tightened.
What kind of monster is this…?
The creature prepared to attack again
Then the ground trembled.
Harder this time.
Everyone froze.
"What was that?" someone whispered.
The tremor grew stronger.
The earth beneath the wheat field cracked open with a deafening rumble.
Villagers screamed as the soil split apart like broken glass.
A violent red glow erupted from the fracture.
Renor's heart dropped.
"No…"
The air twisted above the crack.
Reality itself began to tear.
A glowing scar formed in the air jagged and unnatural, pulsing with crimson energy.
The villagers stared in horror.
"A… Rift…"
The glowing tear expanded.
The red light grew brighter.
And then something moved inside it.
Something big.
The first monster crawled out slowly.
Its body resembled a giant insect with six spindly legs and a long serrated tail. Black chitin armor covered its body like plates of iron.
Its glowing eyes scanned the village.
Then it shrieked.
The sound was high-pitched and monstrous, echoing across the hills.
"Another one!" someone screamed.
A second creature followed.
Then a third.
Then five more.
They poured out of the Rift like insects from a broken nest.
The hunters immediately fired arrows.
"Shoot them!"
Arrows struck the monsters but most simply bounced off their armored bodies.
One of the creatures leapt forward, landing in the middle of the wheat field.
It scuttled toward a nearby barn.
The farmer standing there froze.
"Move!" someone shouted.
Too late.
The creature's claw tore through the barn door.
Wood splintered.
Livestock panicked, cows and sheep bursting out into the fields as the monster slaughtered them in seconds.
Blood stained the golden wheat.
Villagers ran in every direction.
"Get inside!"
"Protect the children!"
"Block the roads!"
Hunter Bram forced himself back onto his feet.
"Hunters with me!"
Several villagers armed with axes and spears gathered beside him.
They formed a shaky line in front of the approaching monsters.
Renor watched in disbelief.
There were too many.
The Rift continued to pulse.
More shadows moved within it.
More monsters waiting to emerge.
One of the creatures lunged forward.
A villager swung an axe wildly.
The blade struck the monster's leg but barely cut through its armor.
The creature retaliated instantly.
Its claw slashed across the man's chest.
He collapsed.
People screamed.
"Fall back!" Bram shouted.
But panic had already taken over.
Some villagers fled toward the forest.
Others ran deeper into the village.
Children cried.
Animals scattered wildly.
The world had turned into chaos.
Renor's heart pounded violently in his chest.
This can't be happening.
The Rift glowed brighter.
Another monster crawled out.
Then another.
At least ten now.
Maybe more.
The hunters were being pushed back step by step.
Even Bram looked desperate.
Their weapons weren't enough.
Human strength wasn't enough.
Renor's mind raced.
If this keeps going… the entire village will die.
The first monster the wolf-like creature he had struck earlier suddenly lunged at him again.
Renor reacted instinctively.
He ducked and swung the shovel upward.
The metal struck the monster's jaw.
CRACK.
The creature recoiled with a snarl.
Renor staggered backward, breathing hard.
His arms ached.
His body trembled.
But something strange was happening inside him.
A faint warmth spread through his chest.
As if something deep within him had just awakened.
The wolf monster attacked again.
Renor moved without thinking.
He sidestepped the claw.
Raised the shovel.
And struck downward with all his strength.
The blade smashed against the monster's skull.
This time
Something inside Renor ignited.
For a split second, the world slowed.
He could see the monster's muscles moving.
He could predict its next attack.
He could feel its life fading.
The creature collapsed.
Dead.
Renor stood frozen.
A strange glow rose from the monster's body.
It drifted through the air like smoke.
Then it rushed toward him.
Straight into his chest.
Renor gasped.
A voice echoed faintly in his mind.
Cold.
Mechanical.
Ancient.
"Essence detected."
Renor's eyes widened.
"What…?"
Behind him, the Rift pulsed violently again.
More monsters began crawling out.
And somewhere deep within Renor's mind…
Something had just begun to awaken.
