Chapter 4 - Chapter Four: New Faces, New Vibes

Ava was sitting on her bed, trying to make sense of the mountain of books and papers on her desk, when there was a loud knock on the dorm door. She frowned, brushing a strand of her curly blonde hair from her face.

‎"Coming!" she called, hopping up.

‎The door swung open, and in burst a whirlwind of energy. A girl with dark, bouncy curls and a huge, mischievous grin practically exploded into the room, dragging a suitcase behind her.

‎"Hey! You must be Ava!" the girl said, throwing her arms wide like she owned the place. "I'm Riley. And wow… your room is cute. I love it!"

‎Ava blinked, caught off guard. She wasn't used to people barging in with this much… personality.

‎"I—I'm Ava," she said softly, stepping aside.

‎"No need to be shy! We're gonna get along so well. I can feel it," Riley said, plopping onto the bed like it was a trampoline. "I already claimed the window seat over there. Hope that's cool."

‎Ava hesitated, then nodded. "Sure. That's fine."

‎Riley clapped her hands, then spun toward the door. "And don't worry, there's one more coming!"

‎A few minutes later, another girl walked in. She was calmer, quieter, but still friendly. Her name was Mia. She carried a backpack slung over one shoulder and gave Ava a small, warm smile. "Hi, I'm Mia. Nice to meet you."

‎"Hi," Ava said, smiling back. She liked Mia immediately. There was something gentle about her, balanced compared to Riley's wild energy.

‎By the time all the luggage was in the room, the three of them were sitting on the beds and floor, trading stories about their hometowns, majors, and professors. Riley kept talking nonstop, gesturing wildly, making funny faces, and laughing at almost everything. Ava found herself laughing too, more than she had in days. It was contagious.

‎"So wait," Riley said, leaning back on her elbows, "you've been here a week already, and I've barely seen you outside the library. Are you, like, some super focused study machine or what?"

‎"I like to keep up with work," Ava admitted. "It's… safer that way."

‎Riley's eyes twinkled. "Safer, huh? Girl, you need a little chaos. That's the best part of college. Trust me."

‎"I'm not sure I'm ready for chaos," Ava said with a small smile.

‎"Oh, don't worry," Riley said. "I'll make sure you get some. Step one: let's bond." She leaned closer and whispered, "I already know you're going to be my partner in crime."

‎Ava laughed. It felt weird, easy, like she had known Riley forever.

‎Mia leaned back, smiling at the two of them. "You two seem like a good team already," she said.

‎As the afternoon passed, they shared snacks, laughed about awkward freshman experiences, and compared notes on professors. Riley was loud, energetic, and fearless, but somehow Ava felt completely safe around her. She wasn't the type to judge; she just wanted to pull people into her world.

‎"So," Riley said after a moment, "are you into parties at all?"

‎Ava shook her head. "Not really. I mean… I've never really had time."

‎Riley raised an eyebrow. "Never? Girl, we're going to change that. You can't survive Harvard just in the library. You gotta live a little."

‎Ava tilted her head, intrigued. "I don't know if I'm ready for that."

‎Riley grinned. "That's the best part. You'll come around."

‎Mia, sitting quietly beside them, added, "It's okay to pace yourself. Just don't close yourself off completely. You'll miss out on fun stuff and people."

‎Ava nodded slowly, thinking about that. She had been so focused on her scholarship and her classes that she hadn't even considered making friends beyond a few polite nods in the cafeteria. Riley's wild energy was tempting, though. It made her feel… alive.

‎By the evening, the three of them were sprawled across the beds, joking about professors' quirks and how impossible some assignments were. Riley flopped dramatically onto the floor, putting her feet up on Ava's bed. "Seriously, you're going to love it here. And I'm going to make sure of it. You're not just some study robot, Ava. You're awesome."

‎Ava laughed, shaking her head. "I'm just trying to survive."

‎"Survive? Girl, please. We're going to thrive. And I have a plan," Riley said, wiggling her fingers mysteriously.

‎"What kind of plan?" Ava asked cautiously.

‎"You'll see," Riley said with a wink. "Step one is social initiation. Step two… well, that depends on how brave you are."

‎Ava groaned, but there was a smile on her face. It had been a long week of lectures, library sessions, and quiet walks across campus. For the first time since arriving, she felt like she belonged somewhere. Like maybe this could be fun.

‎"By the way," Riley said suddenly, sitting up with a spark in her eyes, "there's a party this weekend. Not just any party. It's the kind where you actually meet people, have fun, dance a little, and, you know, experience college for real."

‎Ava's heart skipped. She hadn't been to a party since high school, and even then, it had been small and awkward.

‎"I don't know if—" she began.

‎"Stop thinking," Riley interrupted. "You're coming with me. End of story. I'll pick you up. Dress cute, bring your smile, and don't worry about a thing. Just trust me. You need this."

‎Ava hesitated for a moment, then looked at Riley's beaming face and Mia's encouraging nod. For the first time, she felt like maybe… stepping out of her comfort zone wouldn't be so scary after all.

‎"Okay," she said finally. "I'll go."

‎Riley jumped up and squealed. "Yes! This is going to be amazing. You won't regret it. I promise."

‎Ava smiled softly to herself, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Maybe this wild, friendly roommate of hers was exactly what she needed.

‎As the night grew quieter, with Mia finishing some notes for a class and Riley sprawled across the floor talking about party ideas, Ava leaned back on her bed and thought about how much her life had changed in just a few days. She had arrived at Harvard nervous and uncertain, focused solely on survival. Now, with Riley and Mia, she could feel a little spark of fun creeping in.

‎And as Riley turned to her and said, "Sleep well tonight, freshman. Saturday is going to be legendary," Ava realized she was actually looking forward to it.

‎For the first time in a long time, she felt like she wasn't just surviving. She was about to live.
