Chapter 2 - The Tutorial.

The centipede was gone. Every last bit of it, now resting in Shirori's stomach. It felt strange, a solid lump inside her slender frame, but not unpleasant. More like proof of her first real accomplishment.

"Good," the voice praised. "Consumption is the most efficient way to acquire energy in this form. Energy fuels growth. Growth fuels survival."

Shirori basked in the warm glow of leveling up. Her body felt different. Tighter. Stronger. She experimented, coiling and uncoiling. The movements came easier now, more natural.

So this is how it works, she mused. Kill things, eat them, get stronger. Simple enough.

"Simplistic, but not inaccurate," the voice replied. "However, there are nuances you must understand. What you feel now is the result of accumulated experience manifesting as a level. But beneath that lies the foundation of all power in this world. Mana."

Mana? Like in the stories? Magical energy?

"Correct. Mana is the lifeblood of all supernatural phenomena. It flows through your body, your soul, and the world around you. Your current mana pool is small, but it will grow as you do."

A new notification appeared.

[Mana Pool: 18/18]

Eighteen? That's... not a lot.

"It is sufficient for your current state. Think of mana as a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. The more you grow, the more you can hold. Every skill, every spell, every enhanced movement draws from this pool."

Shirori slithered forward, her belly dragging slightly over the leaves. So what's the difference between a skill and a spell? The king back there mentioned something about it before everything went weird.

"A skill is an ability ingrained in your very being. It becomes instinct. You do not need to think about activating a skill like [Observe]. It simply is. A spell, however, is external. It is shaping mana into a predetermined form through will and incantation. Spells are more flexible but require conscious effort. Skills are rigid but instantaneous."

Got it. Skills are passive or reflexive, spells are active and need focus.

"Adequate simplification."

Shirori felt a flicker of pride. Her years of devouring every isekai manga and light novel she could find were finally paying off. All those hours her classmates spent socializing, she spent absorbing fictional magic systems. Now she had a real one to figure out.

A rustling sound reached her senses. Something small was moving through the undergrowth to her left. She focused, extending her awareness.

[Forest Mouse] - A small rodent. Extremely low threat. High nutritional value relative to size. Provides minimal experience.

Lunch number two, she thought gleefully.

She moved. The stalk was different this time. More deliberate. She used the vibrations of the mouse's own movements to mask her approach. When she was close enough, she struck.

Her fangs pierced fur and flesh. The mouse squeaked once, then went still.

Congratulations! You have defeated a [Forest Mouse]. Experience points gained.

The warmth returned, smaller this time, but welcome. She didn't level up, but she felt the energy trickle into her.

Do I eat it whole? Like the centipede?

"Affirmative. Efficiency demands consuming all available resources."

She opened her jaw and began the slow process. It was easier this time. Less strange. More natural. As the mouse disappeared, a new notification appeared.

Skill Gained: [Stealth (Novice)] - Reduces your presence, making you harder to detect by prey and predators. Effectiveness increases with skill level.

Shirori's mental voice squealed with delight. A SKILL! I got a skill! From hunting! This is exactly like the games!

"The acquisition of skills through action is a fundamental law of this world. Repeated actions become ingrained. Ingrained actions become skills. Continue hunting. Continue growing."

Right, right. Grind the basics. Get the fundamentals down. I can do that.

She moved deeper into the forest, though "deeper" was relative. Everything looked the same through her scent-vision. Towering trees, thick undergrowth, the constant hum of unseen life. She was a tiny creature in an enormous world.

Another hour passed. She found and consumed three more mice and a small lizard. Each kill brought small trickles of experience. Her mana pool slowly expanded.

[Mana Pool: 22/22]

Slow but steady, she thought. Hey, System, are there any ranks for magic? Like in the novels and manga's

"Yes. Magic rank is a measurement of overall magical capacity and potency. It is determined by the quality and quantity of your mana, the skills you possess, and your ability to wield them. F-rank is the baseline for creatures with minimal mana. E-rank represents basic competency. D-rank is considered professional. C-rank is expert. B-rank is master. A-rank is legendary. S-rank is mythical."

And where do I fit?

"You are currently unranked. Your mana pool and skill set are insufficient for official classification. However, based on your growth rate, you will likely reach F-rank within a standard cycle if you continue at your current pace."

A cycle?

"One full rotation of Midgard's primary sun. Approximately twenty-four of your Earth hours."

So a day. I can reach F-rank in a day? That's not bad.

"Do not become complacent. F-rank is the lowest possible classification. The creatures you have defeated are themselves unranked. A single F-rank predator would end you in seconds."

The warning sobered her. She was still at the bottom of the food chain. Literally.

Okay. So what's the fastest way to grow?

"Combat. Consumption. Exploration. Each offers different benefits. Combat provides the most experience. Consumption provides physical growth. Exploration provides knowledge and potential discoveries."

Then I need to find something bigger to fight. Something still manageable, but bigger.

"A logical conclusion. However, I must advise caution. Your [Observe] skill should be used on every new creature before engagement. Knowledge is your greatest weapon."

Shirori slithered forward with renewed purpose. The forest stretched endlessly around her, a maze of green and brown that she was beginning to navigate through scent and vibration. She could feel the temperature gradients, the movement of air, the subtle shifts in the earth.

It was overwhelming and incredible at the same time.

A new scent reached her. Different from the mice. Stronger. More pungent. Something territorial. She slowed her movement, pressing her body low against the forest floor.

Through the undergrowth, she sensed it. A shape. Larger than her. Much larger. Four legs. Fur. A twitching nose.

She focused [Observe].

[Forest Rabbit] - A small herbivore. Faster than it looks. Capable of delivering a powerful kick when threatened. Provides moderate experience. F-rank.

F-rank. My first ranked enemy.

Her heart, if snakes had hearts in the traditional sense, pounded. This was different from mice and lizards. This was an actual threat.

"Recommendation: Observe and withdraw. You are not ready for F-rank combat."

No, she thought, surprising herself with the conviction. No, I need to try. If I run from every challenge, I'll stay weak forever. I need to know what I'm capable of.

"A risky decision. But your choice to make."

Shirori studied the rabbit through her senses. It was grazing, oblivious to her presence. Its legs were muscular, designed for explosive movement. Its ears twitched constantly, scanning for danger.

Okay. Think. I'm a snake. What do snakes do? Ambush. Strike from hiding. Use venom.

Do I even have venom?

"Juvenile Forest Vipers possess mild venom. Insufficient to kill larger prey quickly, but sufficient to impair movement and cause paralysis over time."

Perfect. So I bite, then I wait. Let the venom do its work.

She circled slowly, keeping the downwind direction. The rabbit continued grazing, occasionally lifting its head to look around before returning to the tender shoots.

Shirori found her position. A clump of ferns, close to the rabbit's path. She coiled her body, remembering images from nature documentaries. Conserve energy. Prepare to strike.

The rabbit hopped closer. Closer.

Wait for it. Wait for it.

Now.

She launched. Her body shot forward like a released spring. Fangs aimed for the hind leg, the closest target.

But the rabbit was fast. Faster than she anticipated. It twisted mid-hop, and her fangs caught fur but not flesh. She landed awkwardly on the forest floor.

The rabbit turned. Its eyes, large and dark, locked onto her. Then it moved.

Not away. Toward her.

One powerful leg shot out. The kick connected with her midsection, sending her tumbling backward through the leaves. Pain exploded through her body.

Health: 78%

Owwww.

She recovered quickly. The rabbit was already repositioning for another kick. She had seconds.

Think! Don't panic!

She slithered sideways, using the uneven ground to her advantage. The rabbit's kick missed, gouging a divot in the soft earth. She saw her opening.

While the rabbit was off-balance, she struck again. This time, her fangs sank into the soft flesh of its inner thigh. She felt venom release, a strange tingling sensation flowing from some hidden gland.

The rabbit screamed, a high-pitched sound, and thrashed. It kicked wildly, but she had already released, slithering backward out of range.

She watched. The rabbit hopped frantically, trying to flee. But its leg was already slowing. The venom was working.

Thirty seconds. A minute. The rabbit's movements became sluggish. It stumbled, recovered, stumbled again.

Shirori waited. Patience. That was a snake's virtue.

Finally, the rabbit collapsed. Its sides heaved, then stilled.

Congratulations! You have defeated a [Forest Rabbit]. Experience points gained.

Ding!

You have leveled up!

Shirori -> Level 3

Mana capacity increased. Physical parameters increased significantly. New skill slot available.

Skill Gained: [Venomous Bite (Novice)] - Your bite delivers a mild paralytic venom. Effectiveness increases with skill level and venom potency.

The warmth this time was intense. Euphoric. She felt her scales tighten, her muscles thicken, her awareness expand. The world came into sharper focus.

I did it. I actually did it.

"Impressive," the voice admitted. "You assessed, adapted, and overcame. This is the mindset required for survival in the Primordial Veil. Consume your prize. You have earned it."

Shirori approached the rabbit. It was huge compared to her, easily three times her length. How was she supposed to eat this?

"Patience. Your body will adapt. Begin with the head. The rest will follow."

She opened her jaw and did something that defied all logic. She began to swallow. The rabbit's head disappeared into her mouth. Then the neck. Then the shoulders. Her body stretched, expanded, accommodated the impossible.

It took hours. The sun, what she could sense of it through the canopy, shifted position twice. But finally, the rabbit was inside her. A massive lump that distorted her entire form.

Congratulations! Significant biomass consumed. Physical evolution imminent.

Evolution?

"Your body will now undergo changes based on consumed resources. Rest. This will take time. When you wake, you will be different. Stronger."

Shirori found a sheltered spot beneath a massive root. Her body felt heavy, lethargic. The world began to fade.

Hey, System?

"Yes, Host?"

Thanks. For explaining things. For helping.

There was a pause. A long one.

"You are welcome, Shirori. Rest now. The forest will wait."

And she slept. A deep, dreamless sleep filled with the sensation of growing, changing, becoming. When she woke, nothing would be the same.
