Chapter 2 - The First Kill and the Overlord's Blessing

The shadow that fell over the courtyard wasn't just large; it was suffocating.

Elias stepped out from the arched doorway of the courtyard, his boots crunching on the shattered terracotta tiles of the Medina. Bruno stalked silently beside him, the violet wildfire in the massive hound's eyes leaving faint, glowing trails in the dusty air.

Two streets over, the buildings were quite literally exploding.

A monstrous roar echoed, followed by the sickening sound of stone and mortar being pulverized. Elias peered down the narrow alleyway, his newly enhanced [Agility: 50] granting him kinetic vision that made the falling debris look like it was moving in slow motion.

Then, the Vanguard Boss smashed through a three-story riad, stepping into the main thoroughfare.

Elias's breath hitched.

It was a nightmare of chitin and muscle. It looked like a praying mantis merged with a silverback gorilla, standing nearly twenty feet tall. Its exoskeleton was the color of dried blood, and its massive, scythe-like forelimbs effortlessly sheared through the brick walls of the ancient marketplace.

[Target Analyzed]

[Species: Blood-Iron Scythe Fiend (Vanguard Boss)]

[Level: 15]

[Danger Level: Fatal. Flee immediately.]

Flee? A grim smile tugged at the corner of Elias's mouth.

Down the street, a group of five survivors two locals in torn clothes and three tourists were sprinting desperately away from the beast. They were weeping, screaming for a god that had seemingly abandoned them.

The Scythe Fiend didn't even rush. It took a lazy, thudding step forward and raised one massive bladed arm to cleave the group in half.

"Elias?" a panicked voice called out from the side.

Elias glanced over. A man was hiding behind a crumbled spice cart, his face pale with terror. Elias recognized him vaguely a shopkeeper who usually sold overpriced saffron.

"Don't go out there!" the shopkeeper hissed, his eyes wide. "It's a demon! Hide!"

Elias looked at the terrified man, then at the survivors about to be slaughtered, and finally at the Boss. The old Elias the quiet expat who just wanted to write stories and walk his dog would have hidden. But the cold, calculated logic of the System was already rewriting the rules of reality.

If he hid, this thing would eventually hunt him down. If he fought it alongside a dozen other people later, he'd have to share the loot.

"Stay out of the way," Elias told the shopkeeper.

He cracked his neck, feeling the terrifying, intoxicating surge of the [Soul Link] thrumming through his veins. Fifty percent of an SSS-Rank Mythic Beast's power was currently housed in his distinctly human body.

"Bruno," Elias said, his voice deadly calm.

The massive, lion-sized hellhound looked up, his tail giving a single, heavy thump against the cobblestones.

"Fetch."

Bruno didn't run; he vanished.

The cobblestones beneath the hound's paws exploded into dust as he launched himself forward. A streak of abyssal black and violet lightning tore down the alleyway.

The Scythe Fiend was mere milliseconds away from decapitating the fleeing survivors when a hundred-and-sixty pounds of dark matter collided with its chest.

BOOM.

The shockwave shattered the remaining glass in the street. The Level 15 Boss, a creature weighing several tons, was physically lifted off its feet and hurled backward, crashing through a stone archway in a tangle of limbs and dust.

The survivors collapsed, staring in sheer horror at the new monster that had just saved them.

Bruno stood in the center of the wreckage, his bone-plated armor absorbing the ambient light. He let out a roar that wasn't a bark, but a concussive blast of dark energy.

The Boss shrieked, scrambling up. Its chest plates were cracked, oozing a foul, neon-green ichor. It swung its massive scythe at Bruno, a strike fast enough to break the sound barrier.

[Warning: Incoming fatal strike!]

But Bruno wasn't there.

The Abyssal Hellhound's speed was incomprehensible. He ducked under the blade, his jaws unhinging. Violet fire erupted, but this time, it wasn't a spray. It was a concentrated beam of raw, thermal energy that slammed point-blank into the Boss's knee joint.

The chitin melted instantly. The Boss shrieked in agony, dropping to one knee.

Elias didn't just watch. He was already moving.

His muscles coiled, and he leaped. He cleared a ruined cart in a single bound, soaring fifteen feet through the air. He didn't have a weapon, but with a [Strength: 45], he didn't necessarily need one to deal damage.

He landed on the Boss's back, grabbing the jagged edges of its carapace to anchor himself.

The beast thrashed wildly, trying to throw him off.

"Bruno! The throat!" Elias yelled over the din, driving his fist down into the cracked armor on the beast's neck. His knuckles bruised, but the chitin splintered further under his enhanced strength.

Bruno lunged. The hellhound's jaws clamped around the Scythe Fiend's neck.

The Boss let out a final, gurgling screech. It raised its uninjured blade to skewer the dog, but Elias wrenched his arms around the beast's sensory antennae, pulling with brutal, agonizing force.

SNAP.

The Boss's head jerked backward, and Bruno's jaws tore through the softened chitin. A localized burst of dark gravity pulsed from the dog's mouth, instantly crushing the fiend's internal organs into a dense singularity.

The massive Level 15 Vanguard Boss went entirely limp.

It dissolved into a mountain of ash, dropping Elias heavily to the ground.

Silence descended on the ruined street.

Bruno trotted over to Elias, his terrifying, demonic face completely at odds with the way he happily nuzzled his master's hand, seeking head pats for a job well done. Elias laughed, wiping green ichor off his jeans, and scratched behind the bone plates on Bruno's ears.

"Good boy," Elias breathed, his chest heaving. "Very good boy."

Then, the world seemed to freeze. A golden light, so bright it eclipsed the Moroccan sun, bathed the entire street.

[CRITICAL ALERT: Impossible Feat Achieved.]

[A Level 1 Player has slain a Level 15 Vanguard Boss.]

[Calculating Experience...]

[Level Up!]

[Level Up!]

[Level Up!]

[Level Up!]

[Level Up!]

Elias watched, mesmerized, as his level skyrocketed from 1 to 6 in a matter of seconds. But the notifications weren't done. The golden light intensified, shooting a pillar directly into the sky.

[Global Announcement: The First Boss Kill has been achieved in the 'Earth' Tutorial Zone.]

[Player: Anonymous has claimed the First Kill.]

[Awarding 'Overlord's Blessing' and Mythic Loot Cache.]

All over the world from the burning ruins of New York to the panicked streets of Tokyo billions of survivors stared at the golden text floating in the sky. While they were dying to Level 1 scavengers, someone had just killed a Boss.

Elias ignored the global chat icon that was suddenly blinking wildly with millions of messages. He was focused on the glowing, golden chest resting in the ashes of the Scythe Fiend.

He knelt, popping the latch.

Inside rested three items: a pitch-black ring, a glowing skill book, and a strange, crystalline key.

[Loot Acquired: Ring of the Void Weaver (Rank: S)]

[Loot Acquired: Skill Book - 'Shadow Step' (Rank: A)]

[Loot Acquired: Dungeon Key - The Sunken Labyrinth of Marrakesh (Rank: Unknown)]

Elias picked up the key. It pulsed with a cold, rhythmic heartbeat. As soon as his fingers brushed the crystal, the ground beneath his feet violently trembled.

[Warning: The Dungeon Key has been activated.]

[The Medina safe-zone is collapsing. You are being pulled into the Abyss.]

Before Elias could even curse, the cobblestones beneath him and Bruno gave way, plunging them into absolute, suffocating darkness.
