Chapter 3 - Neon Shadows of Neo-Astra

The deeper Kael walked into Neo-Astra, the more he realized the city was far larger than it had seemed from above.

From the sky bridge, everything had looked organized—beautiful even. Perfect lines of towers, endless moving lights, flying vehicles gliding through the air like glowing birds.

But down at street level, the city had a different rhythm.

Neo-Astra breathed.

And like every living thing, it had shadows.

Kael stepped off the bridge and onto a wide pedestrian avenue lined with massive holo-signs and glowing storefronts. Transparent panels floated above the street projecting advertisements into the air—luxury cybernetic implants, memory-enhancement capsules, genetic beauty programs promising flawless skin and perfect bone structure.

A massive screen flickered to life above him.

A tall woman with silver hair appeared in the hologram, her voice smooth and persuasive.

"Upgrade your future with AstraGene Bio-Enhancements. Perfection isn't a dream anymore—it's a decision."

The image shifted, displaying elegant men and women with impossibly symmetrical features.

Perfect.

Everyone here looked perfect.

Kael continued walking.

He had noticed it the moment he stepped into the city.

People were taller.

Stronger.

More refined.

Even the casual pedestrians looked like models from luxury advertisements.

Advanced medicine and gene therapies had changed humanity.

Minor imperfections were rare now.

Disease was almost extinct.

Even aging had slowed dramatically.

But despite all that beauty, something beneath the surface felt… uneasy.

Kael couldn't quite explain it.

The city's lights were bright, but the atmosphere carried tension—like a distant storm building behind a calm horizon.

A group of young men passed him, laughing loudly.

Their clothing shimmered with programmable fabrics that changed color as they moved.

Above them, three flying police drones hovered silently, scanning the crowd.

Kael slipped his hands into the pockets of his dark coat and continued walking.

He didn't have a specific destination yet.

The only thing he knew was the address written on a small folded paper inside his pocket.

An old contact.

A place where he might be able to stay temporarily.

But the address was located deeper inside the district, and Kael decided to take his time getting there.

The city fascinated him.

He had grown up in isolated places—quiet monasteries, hidden training grounds, remote communities that valued secrecy above everything else.

Neo-Astra was the opposite.

Noise.

Color.

Movement.

Energy.

Everything here seemed alive.

Music spilled out of open clubs and lounges. Restaurants filled the air with the scent of exotic spices. Street performers manipulated holographic projections to create dazzling visual illusions for crowds of tourists.

Kael slowed slightly as he approached a large open plaza.

At its center stood a massive digital fountain.

Instead of water, streams of glowing particles flowed upward into the air before dissolving into tiny points of light.

Children ran around the fountain, laughing as the lights danced around them.

Kael watched them quietly.

For a moment, something inside him softened.

The world had always seemed dangerous.

But scenes like this made it feel… normal.

Peaceful.

Then the feeling came again.

Stronger than before.

Kael froze mid-step.

A strange pressure spread through his chest.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Something deeper.

His breathing slowed.

The sounds of the plaza faded slightly as his senses sharpened.

It felt like a distant vibration humming through the air.

A pulse.

His eyes narrowed.

The energy wasn't coming from the city itself.

It was moving.

Flowing through the streets somewhere nearby.

And somehow—

His body was responding to it.

Kael turned slowly, scanning the crowd.

Nothing looked unusual.

Families walked between shops.

Couples sat at outdoor cafes.

Security drones drifted quietly above the plaza.

Everything appeared normal.

But the sensation continued.

Faint.

Persistent.

Like a thread tugging gently at something deep within him.

Kael clenched his hand slightly.

The feeling faded again.

Just like before.

Gone.

He exhaled quietly.

Something strange was happening.

But without understanding what it was, there was nothing he could do about it.

He pushed the thought aside and continued walking.

The plaza slowly transitioned into a narrower street lined with smaller buildings.

The lighting dimmed slightly here.

Less polished.

Less glamorous.

Kael noticed subtle changes immediately.

The people here were different.

Their clothing was darker.

More practical.

Many wore coats with high collars or hooded jackets.

The advertisements were fewer.

Instead of luxury brands, small neon signs advertised things like "Aether Battery Repairs" and "Black-Market Cybernetics."

Kael had unknowingly crossed into one of Neo-Astra's older districts.

The Neon Market.

It was famous for selling things that didn't always appear on official trade networks.

Rare artifacts.

Illegal augmentations.

Ancient relics.

Things powerful families preferred to buy quietly.

Kael wasn't looking for trouble.

But curiosity slowed his steps again.

He walked past a narrow shop displaying glowing crystals inside reinforced glass cases.

The sign above the door read:

ETHERIUM EXCHANGE

A man with mechanical eyes stood behind the counter, watching passersby with a calculating expression.

Farther down the street, two women examined a rack of small metal devices emitting faint blue light.

Kael had seen similar technology before.

Portable Aether amplifiers.

Dangerous if misused.

As he moved deeper into the market district, the air changed again.

The crowd grew denser.

Voices lowered.

Deals were whispered instead of spoken openly.

Kael kept walking.

But this time, he remained more alert.

A city like Neo-Astra didn't stay perfect without hiding certain things in places like this.

And hidden places often attracted dangerous people.

He turned a corner.

That was when he felt it again.

The energy pulse.

But this time—

It was stronger.

Much stronger.

Kael stopped instantly.

His heart skipped a beat.

This was not imagination.

Something powerful was nearby.

His grey eyes scanned the street ahead.

And for the first time since entering the city—

He noticed someone watching him.

Across the road, leaning casually against the wall of a dimly lit building, stood a man dressed in dark clothing.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

His posture relaxed but alert.

Even from this distance, Kael could feel something unusual about him.

The man's eyes were sharp.

Predatory.

Like a wolf studying its surroundings.

For a moment, their gazes met.

The connection lasted only a second.

Then the man straightened slightly and turned his attention away, as if nothing had happened.

Kael remained still.

Something about that brief glance had sent another ripple through the strange energy inside him.

But before he could think further about it—

A sudden crash echoed down the street.

Glass shattered somewhere nearby.

Several people shouted in alarm.

Kael turned his head toward the noise.

A narrow alley beside the market had erupted into chaos.

Two figures burst out from the darkness.

They were running.

Behind them—

Something else moved.

Something large.

Something fast.

The crowd scattered immediately.

A monstrous shape leapt from the shadows.

Its skin was dark and uneven, almost like charred stone.

Its eyes burned with a dull red glow.

Clawed limbs slammed into the pavement as it lunged toward the fleeing figures.

The creature was not human.

And it did not belong in Neo-Astra.

Kael felt the strange energy inside him surge violently.

For the first time since arriving in the city—

He understood.

Whatever force had been reacting inside him…

It had been warning him.

Something dangerous had just entered the night.

And Neo-Astra was about to become far less peaceful.
