Chapter 5 - The awakening

The day began like any other. Suyin lounged in her richly adorned bedroom, the morning light entering through silk curtains, casting golden rays on the polished marble floor. She twirled a strand of her fiery red hair absentmindedly, unaware that her life would change forever before the sun set.

But the unease had been growing all night. Her father's words echoed in her mind, turning what should've been excitement about her 21st birthday into a gnawing pit of dread.

*Suyin, today is the day you will awaken.*

At first, she dismissed the cryptic warning, thinking it was part of some exaggerated family tradition. She rolled her eyes when her father spoke of her destiny to inherit a power beyond comprehension. It all sounded too mythical, too ridiculous for a modern world where wealth and influence held real power.

But as the morning unfolded, the first wave hit her like a sledgehammer.

It started with a dull ache in her chest, then spread rapidly through her body. The air seemed to thicken, suffocating her, and her limbs grew heavy as if they were being pulled by invisible chains. Suyin gasped for breath, staggering as her knees buckled beneath her. She clutched at the ornate bedpost, her vision blurring.

"W-What is this?!" she screamed, her voice hoarse and panicked. "What's happening to me?"

The door to her room burst open, and her mother rushed in, her eyes wide with fear. "Suyin! Oh, my God—"

But before her mother could come close, Suyin's body convulsed violently. A wild scream tore from her throat, powerful and wild, nothing like the usual spoiled, dismissive tone she was known for. Her eyes flared, glowing an unnatural green as the power surged through her veins. Her mother stumbled backward, her face pale, unable to step any closer.

"Don't touch her!" A stern voice barked from the hallway. Suyin's father entered the room, his face set in grim determination. His hands trembled slightly as he took in the scene before him, his daughter, the apple of his eye was writhing in agony as her body began to undergo the transformation they had long feared.

"Father!" Suyin choked out, her voice cracked and raw. "Make it stop! Please!"

But her father's face betrayed nothing but helplessness. "This is beyond me, Suyin," he said, his voice steady but pained. "The Imugi bloodline... it's awakening within you. I wish I could take this from you, but this is your burden."

"I don't want this!" she shrieked, her body contorting as the fire inside her veins burned hotter. Her skin felt like it was being ripped apart, as if her very essence was trying to claw its way out. Her hands gripped the floor, nails digging into the marble, scraping it as if trying to hold on to something real. "I'm not... a monster!"

Her mother, standing by the door, sobbed softly. "We can't do anything for her, can we?" she whispered, clutching her chest.

"No," her father replied, eyes dark with guilt. "Not until it's over."

Suyin's screams filled the room as a wave of searing heat overtook her, followed by unbearable cold. She convulsed, her body jerking uncontrollably. She could feel herself slipping, her sanity fracturing as the raw power surged, overwhelming her senses.

"Why didn't you tell me this would happen?!" Suyin yelled, her voice desperate, filled with rage. Her father's silence cut through her anger like a blade. She lashed out, flinging objects across the room with an unseen force. Vases shattered, paintings fell from the walls, and her mother cowered by the door, terrified to get too close.

"I didn't ask for this life!" Suyin screamed as her voice was filled with fury. Her eyes, glowing brighter now, locked onto her parents with a mixture of hatred and fear. "I just wanted to be normal!"

Her father clenched his fists, clearly torn between wanting to help her and knowing there was nothing he could do. "You were never meant to be normal, Suyin. You are the chosen descendant of the Imugi. This... is your fate."

Suyin's head snapped back, a deep roar escaping her lips as flames briefly flickered across her skin, only to vanish into ice once again. The temperature in the room fluctuated wildly, and her parents stepped further back, their faces filled with both sorrow and fear.

"I can't... control it..." Suyin whispered, her voice trembling as tears streaked down her face. "It's... too much..."

Her body shook violently, each surge of power tearing at her mind. One moment she was burning, her skin sizzling as though her flesh were melting off her bones, and the next she was freezing, her breath visible in the air as frost covered her fingertips.

In her tiredness, she caught her mother's eyes with her eyes pleading, desperate. "Help me!" Suyin screamed, her mind slipping further into madness. "Do something!"

Her mother took a step forward, but her father held her back. "She'll kill you," he said softly, his eyes never leaving Suyin as she writhed on the floor. "She's not herself right now."

Suyin screamed again, her voice tearing through the room as a mirror shattered across the wall. Her red hair whipped around her face like flames, glowing with an ethereal light. Her muscles tightened, and she arched her back in agony, her teeth clenched, her hands clawing at the air.

Suddenly, it all stopped.

Suyin collapsed onto the floor, her body limp, her breathing shallow. The intense heat and cold that had tormented her all day vanished in an instant. Her parents stood frozen, staring at her, unsure whether to approach or stay away.

Slowly, her eyes fluttered open, but they were no longer her eyes. They glowed with an unnatural brilliance, a deep green like the heart of a dragon. Suyin struggled to move, but her body felt foreign, as if she didn't belong in it anymore.

"W-What... what have I become?" she whispered, her voice faint, trembling as she looked down at her trembling hands.

But before she could process the change, her body jerked violently, and she fell back, her mind consumed by a vision, a dark mountain, a hidden temple, and a man with piercing eyes. His presence dominated the vision, dark and commanding, as though he were waiting for her. Her body stiffened, falling into a trance.

Her parents rushed forward, but it was too late. Suyin was gone, she was locked in a dream that only her half-dragon soul could understand.

As Suyin's body lay motionless, her mind was trapped in visions of ancient battles just to fulfill the prophecies, her parents looked on in horror. They had known this day would come, but nothing had prepared them for the brutal reality of their daughter's transformation.
