Chapter 3 - MONSTER IN THE DOORWAY

Mira's POV

The man is on his knees.

Mira stares at him, her brain refusing to understand what her eyes are seeing. An Alpha. A massive, naked, blood-soaked Alpha is on his knees before her like she matters. Like she's someone important.

This doesn't make sense.

Nothing about this moment makes sense.

He whispered something. Mate. What does that even mean? Why did he say it like it was the most important thing in the world?

The knife in her hands shakes badly. The blade is small. Pathetic. It wouldn't hurt him. Nothing could hurt someone like this. He's all muscle and power and danger radiating off him like heat.

And those eyes aren't angry.

That's what terrifies her most.

When Ronan looks at her, his eyes are cold and cruel. He enjoys hurting her. She can see it on his face. He smiles when she cries.

But this Alpha's eyes are something else. She doesn't have a word for it. His eyes look like he's drinking her in. Like she's the only thing that exists in the entire world.

Like she matters.

"Please," she whispers again because her voice doesn't work properly anymore. Her throat is tight with fear. Her heart pounds so hard she thinks it might break her ribs.

He doesn't move.

Just stays on one knee, staring at her with impossible silver eyes. His chest heaves like he's been running. Like he's trying to control his breathing.

Around them, the pack house is still shaking with violence. Crashes and screams and sounds of fighting. But in this small storage room, there's just the sound of their breathing.

Just her and this giant Alpha who knelt before her for no reason she understands.

Mira doesn't know what to do. What Alphas do to Omegas usually comes down to two things: use them or hurt them. Those are the only options she knows. Three years under Ronan's rule taught her that.

But this Alpha kneels.

"What do you want?" Her voice cracks. She hates that it cracks. She hates showing fear.

"To protect you," he says simply. Like it's the most obvious answer in the world.

She laughs. Actually laughs. It comes out a little broken and a lot hysterical.

"You don't know me."

"I know you're mine." His voice is calm but there's something underneath it. Something raw. "I know someone has hurt you terribly. I know I'll destroy anyone who touches you ever again."

The words should comfort her. Maybe for another girl, they would. But Mira knows better. She knows that promises like this are lies Alphas tell before they break you.

"I'm no one's," she says. She makes her voice hard. "I belong to myself."

Something like a smile touches his mouth. Like she said something that pleased him. Like she said something right.

"Then let me earn the right to be by your side. Let me prove I'm not like him. Not like Ronan."

The moment he says Ronan's name, something shifts. A door slams somewhere in the pack house. Ronan's voice shouts orders in the distance. He's still fighting. Still commanding his warriors.

Still alive.

The Alpha's head snaps toward the sound. His entire body tenses like a predator catching scent of prey. For just a second, his focus moves away from her. His eyes go cold and lethal.

This is the Alpha the stories talk about. This is the warrior who destroyed his enemies without hesitation. This is the monster all the packs fear.

When he looks back at her, his expression softens again.

"I need to find him," he says. "But I won't leave you alone."

He starts to move. Slowly, telegraphing every gesture so she doesn't startle. He shifts his weight forward, preparing to stand.

Mira's survival instinct screams.

This is wrong. This is a trick. This is how they get you to drop your guard. He'll stand. He'll grab her. He'll drag her away. She knows how this goes.

She lunges forward and presses the knife against his throat.

The blade is small but it's sharp. One good push and she could cut deep. Could hurt him.

He freezes instantly.

His eyes go wide and for a second, she thinks maybe she's surprised him. Maybe a tiny Omega with a kitchen knife is the last thing he expected.

But he doesn't try to disarm her. Doesn't hurt her back. Just looks at the blade and then looks at her face.

"Go ahead," he says quietly. "If it makes you feel safe, you can hold the knife. You can hold it while we walk out of here. You can hold it while I take you somewhere warm and safe. You can hold it forever if you need to."

She blinks. Did he just give her permission to threaten him?

"Don't play games with me," she whispers.

"I'm not." His voice is steady. Patient. Like he's talking to a frightened animal. Maybe that's what she is to him. "I've never played games with anything that matters. And you matter more than anything I've ever held."

The way he says it makes something in her chest crack. Just a tiny break but it feels like the biggest one yet.

Before she can respond, the storage room door swings open. A huge brown-haired man appears in the doorway. His body is tense and ready for violence.

He takes one look at Mira with the knife pressed against the Alpha's throat and lets out a surprised laugh.

"Well, I didn't expect that," he says. His voice is warm. Amused. Nothing like Ronan's cold tone.

The Alpha doesn't look away from Mira. "Tobias, meet my mate. Mate, this is Tobias. My Beta. My friend."

The word mate again. She doesn't understand it but something about hearing it twice makes it feel more real.

The brown-haired man's expression goes soft. Like he's looking at something beautiful.

"Ronan's trying to escape through the back corridors," Tobias says to the Alpha. "We need to move."

The Alpha nods but doesn't stand. Stays on his knee looking at her.

"Come with me," he says. "Please. I need to stop Ronan. And I need to know you're safe."

Mira knows she should refuse. Knows she should run. Knows that nothing good comes from trusting an Alpha.

But his silver eyes hold hers and something in her whispers that maybe this one is different.

She lowers the knife slowly.

The moment the blade leaves his throat, footsteps thunder above them. Fast. Desperate. Running.

Ronan.

"He's cornered upstairs," Tobias shouts. "He's trying to reach the roof."

The Alpha stands in one smooth motion. He looks at Mira. "Stay with Tobias. I'll be back."

"Wait," she calls out.

He stops. Turns back to her.

"What's your name?" she asks.

His expression softens. Like she just asked him the most important question anyone has ever asked.

"Ezra. I'm Ezra Blackwood."

Then he's gone. Running toward the sound of Ronan's footsteps.

And Mira realizes with absolute certainty that everything in her life has just changed.
