Chapter 2 - THE COMPOUND

Sophia's POV

The Blackthorne Pack compound appears without warning.

Black stone walls rise out of the forest like they grew there naturally. Massive steel gates. Warriors in dark uniforms standing alert at every entrance. Everything about the place screams power and danger and that Omegas have no business being here.

A guard opens her car door. He's huge. Scarred. He doesn't introduce himself or welcome her or do any of the basic courtesies that make people feel less terrified.

"Follow me," he says.

The guard escorts her inside and Sophia's first impression is of cold. Endless cold. High ceilings. Stone and steel everywhere. Hallways that stretch forever in every direction. She passes open doorways showing training grounds where wolves move with precision that takes her breath away. They're all bigger than her. Faster. Better. Everyone stops to stare as she walks past and she watches their eyes track her movement with curiosity and disdain.

She hears the whispers before she fully registers the words. Omega. New mate. Sacrifice.

They pass a dining hall that could fit her entire family compound inside. Massive stone tables. Benches carved from wood that looks ancient. She imagines hundreds of wolves eating here. Thousands maybe. All of them stronger and more important than her.

Libraries next. Books stacked to the ceiling. She catches glimpses of shelves organized by topic. Pack history. Military strategy. Ancient texts about the old days. The Blackthorne Pack is old. Established. Powerful in ways her small pack could never be.

Training chambers. Fighting pits. Spaces designed for creatures to develop their strength into weapons. Everything about this compound is built for wolves. Not for Omegas. Definitely not for girls like her.

The guard finally stops at a massive wooden door.

He knocks twice and waits.

A deep voice from inside says come in.

Sophia's heart is hammering so hard against her ribs that she thinks it might crack them. This is it. The moment her life becomes someone else's property. The moment she stops being a daughter and starts being an acquisition.

She pushes the door open.

The man behind the desk doesn't look up at first. He's reading something with complete focus. His hair is black and wet like he just came from a shower. His shoulders are broad even sitting down. Everything about him says power and control and absolute certainty that he's the most important creature in any room he enters.

When he finally looks at her his eyes are black too. Not the normal dark brown of pack members. These are predator eyes. Ancient eyes. Eyes that have seen things and decided they weren't worth feeling bad about.

He stands slowly.

Sophia understands why Omegas submit without question. Why the hierarchy exists. Why the weak kneel to the strong.

He's tall. Impossibly tall. Everything about him screams that he could destroy her without trying. When he speaks his voice is quiet and that's somehow more terrifying than if he'd shouted.

"You're the Omega."

It's not a question. It's a statement. A fact. Like him identifying exactly what she is in the world.

"Yes."

"What's your name?"

"Sophia."

He studies her carefully. Like he's reading something written on her skin that she can't see herself. Like he's seeing past the surface to something underneath. The silence stretches and she doesn't know what to do with her hands or her eyes or her body.

"Well Sophia. I'm Alpha Kaden. You'll be staying here for the ceremony tomorrow. Someone will show you your quarters."

He sits back down at his desk and returns to reading like she's already dismissed. Like her presence is no longer relevant to him now that he's identified what she is.

Sophia leaves without responding.

In the hallway a woman with braided hair and midnight skin waits for her. She's tall and moves like she belongs everywhere. Like she commands respect simply by existing.

"I'm Mira," the woman says. "Beta female. Come on, I'll show you where you're staying."

Mira escorts her through more hallways. Different ones this time. These corridors are residential. Less formal. More lived in. The other wolves they pass don't stare like the guards in the main halls. They just acknowledge Mira with respect and barely notice Sophia exists.

They reach a heavy wooden door and Mira opens it.

The bedroom inside is bigger than Sophia's entire childhood home. High ceilings. Dark stone walls. A bed that looks like it costs more than her father's entire compound. Windows overlook the forest below. Everything is beautiful in a cold way that makes clear she's not here to be comfortable. She's here to be possessed.

"This is your space until tomorrow," Mira says. She leans against the doorframe and her expression shifts to something more serious. "After the ceremony everything changes."

Sophia sits on the edge of the massive bed. The silk beneath her feels strange. Too soft. Too expensive for someone like her.

"Tell me about him," Sophia says quietly.

Mira looks out the window at the compound far below. When she speaks her voice is careful. Measured.

"Kaden is Alpha King. He's ruled this pack for ten years with absolute control. He's never taken a mate. Never wanted one. He rejects every female the pack offers him."

"Why?"

"His mother died when he was young and his father convinced him that emotions are weakness. That feeling things makes you vulnerable. So Kaden became a machine instead of a wolf." Mira turns back to face her. "He built himself into something that doesn't break. Doesn't bleed. Doesn't need anything."

"That's not human."

"No." Mira sits beside her on the bed. "But machines are predictable, Sophia. And if tomorrow during the ceremony you show him something he's never seen before. Something that breaks his patterns. Something that makes him feel something..."

She trails off.

"What happens then?"

"Then you become dangerous to him. And Kaden Blackthorne doesn't let dangerous things go."
