Chapter 10 - The Alpha

The clearing was silent except for the soft rustle of leaves in the wind. Alex's chest heaved, his dagger still clutched tightly in his hand. The five Shadow Wolves lay defeated around him—the last, the Alpha, a massive beast, its black fur bristling, rose slowly from the shadows of the cave.

Alex's heart pounded. He could feel the Alpha's presence radiating danger, a sheer force that even the smaller wolves hadn't possessed. The Analyze skill lit up in front of him.

Shadow Wolf Alpha — Level 6 — Threat: High

Alex swallowed hard. Level 6. The system's warning from earlier had not exaggerated. This was far beyond anything he had faced before. He glanced at his own stats.

Level 4 — Strength 3 — Agility 3 — Intelligence 1 — Mana 0

Not enough. He was outmatched. But I can't fail… he thought. The quest required all five wolves to be eliminated. Retreating now would mean starting over, possibly even risking his life in the forest with wandering monsters nearby.

He focused, letting the familiar surge of system energy steady his breathing. The glowing interface appeared.

[Warning: Enemy Leader Detected]

[Suggested Skill: Analyze → Detect Weakness]

Alex crouched slightly, studying the Alpha carefully. Its muscles rippled as it moved, its eyes locked onto him with uncanny intelligence. Then he saw it—a faint patch on its left flank, less thickly muscled, almost as if the creature had a hidden vulnerability.

There. That's my opening.

The Alpha growled low, a deep rumble that shook the clearing. The other trees around it trembled in resonance with the sound. Its pack instincts were gone—the smaller wolves already lay defeated. Now it was just him and the Alpha.

Alex tightened his grip on the dagger. He could feel the cold steel bite into his palm, a reassuring weight against the fear gnawing at his chest. The Alpha lunged.

Alex rolled to the side just in time, narrowly avoiding its claws. The beast pivoted mid-leap, and Alex used the motion to strike, stabbing the dagger into the weak spot he had identified. The Alpha yelped, staggering back, but it wasn't enough to stop it.

It lunged again. Faster. Smarter. Its glowing red eyes locked onto him like a predator measuring his strength.

Alex dodged, rolled, and stabbed again. The Alpha roared and spun violently, throwing him off balance. He hit the ground hard but rolled to absorb the impact. Pain shot up his side, but adrenaline flooded through him.

Focus. Timing. Precision.

The system suggested another skill activation. Alex's hands clenched as he triggered Analyze → Detect Weakness again. More information appeared.

Critical Weakness — Left Flank

Vulnerable to successive attacks in quick succession

Alex grinned despite the fear coursing through him. Now he had a strategy.

He leapt to the side and struck twice in rapid succession, aiming for the weak spot. The Alpha roared in fury and staggered again, blood visible along the flank. It became clear the monster was strong—but not invincible.

With a final burst of energy, Alex dodged a swipe, rolled under its legs, and thrust upward with all his strength. The dagger sank deep into the Alpha's side. The beast let out a deafening roar before collapsing heavily to the ground. The forest was silent once more. The system flashed triumphantly.

[Boss Defeated — Shadow Wolf Alpha]

[Quest Complete — Reward: 200 EXP, 1 Beginner Skill Point]

[Level Up! Level 5 — Strength +1, Agility +1]

Alex sank to his knees, exhaustion and exhilaration washing over him. His chest heaved as he clutched the dagger, still dripping faint blood from the Alpha. He had survived. He had won.

For the first time, he felt the weight of real power. Not magic, not flashy spells, but sheer skill, timing, and the system guiding him.

Somewhere high above the forest, the hooded watcher observed everything silently. The man's eyes narrowed, a faint smirk playing on his lips.

"…Interesting," he whispered. "The boy is stronger than I expected. And faster… more precise. He has the Forbidden System."

The shadows shifted around him as he disappeared from sight. His attention remained fixed on Alex, already planning his next move.

Back in the clearing, Alex wiped his dagger and let himself collapse onto the soft grass. Sweat and dirt covered him, but he couldn't stop smiling. I survived… and I leveled up.

The forest seemed quieter now, almost reverent. He had faced one of the deadliest creatures nearby and had lived to see the morning. His thoughts drifted to the system again.

If this thing is really forbidden… then I need to be careful. But I also need it. Without it, I wouldn't have survived.

The wind rustled through the trees. Somewhere in the distance, more monsters stirred, their growls faint but unmistakable.

Alex stood slowly, gripping the dagger once more. His muscles ached, but the fire inside him was stronger than ever. This world is dangerous… but I can survive.

And somewhere deep in the shadows, far beyond the forest, forces who had been hunting the Forbidden System had finally detected activity.

Alex had just made his first powerful enemies. And the real game was about to begin.
